I agree, and I think that's why a lot of people won't like it, because it doesn't really have a main protagonist, it's an ensemble piece. The characters move about like chess pieces to serve the overall plot.
Ishura is prime example of epic fantasy with world mysteries, politics and diverse cast of powerful characters each with their own backstory, development and goals. But it is really slow burn. For reference - first anime season covers first novel but we don't get most of the main characters introduced and event started until end of book 2 and there is 9 books as of today. I binged all five translated volumes and crave for more but it certainly not everyone's cup of tea. Because there is so many characters sometimes you will not see some of your favorite ones for an entire volume (or three) not to mention that all this time they might be on a cliffhanger. =)
@@dibbobiswas9343I would say about 45% of the main cast was introduced in first volume and another 45% in the second. And as we already have seen from the anime - plot armor is not very thick, even heroes can die - everyone is fair game. Thou I wouldn't say that author is needlessly cruel to them.
This is all fine to me. After reading The Wheel of Time series, this is all par for the course 😅. Although, I guess that series sort of does have a main character, but it also has several lesser main characters. Game of Thrones has no single main character... although Jon Snow comes close in the last few seasons (haven't read those books, but still).
@@SpiderboyN2Jesus in term for lack of distinct main character it reminds me of Malazan Book of the Fallen the most which happened to be my benchmark for epic fantasy genre. Thanks for reminding about The Wheel of Time I was planning to sink my claws into it for a while now.
Watched and enjoyed it. There's a reason you put Nihili front and center in your thumbnail. I like her design. (Also another version of Dorothy made it out of the Library)
@@fallasleep9472 - Those 5 episodes were definitely needed. Without them, the later episodes wouldn't have worked at all. I just meant that the average anime-watcher might not get past episode 5 at all.
It is doing good in Japan if I am not mistaken, and Japan is the primary market for it. Getting a season 2 confirmed right after the season ended shows that.

This anime is a lot like Akame Ga Kill in terms of the character death counter since a lot of people die in this story. While Ishura is a lot better than Akame Ga Kill in terms of world building, the characters aren’t that interesting at all. The only ones I care about are the Magpie, General Taran and her foster daughter, the Wyvern General, Nihili, the skeleton guy and elf girl.
I love the concept that this anime brings to us. You'd think that the world would be all sunshine and rainbows now that the demon king has been defeated, but no the demon king's death resulted in a massive power vacuum in which heroes, monsters, and even entire nations fight each other to the death to see who would be the next ruler of the world.
It's not just the death of the Demon King, but also the disappearance of the hero who killed them as well. It's the loss of both of them that truly causes the power vacuum, really.
Really good explanation. It‘s so true that it‘s kinda hard to recommend it to others because a lot of people won‘t really like the progress. I personally love it and started the Light Novel after I have watched half of the show. It literally hits my unique taste and probably became my most favorite series of everything I have watched/read until now. So many characters are getting introduced with their own story and goals as if they are main characters. I really love to see how each of the characters is interacting with each other character. It‘s not like that we have one protagonist and we follow his path with all of his interactions etc. The focus switches between every character and that makes it so good for me. They are not all just little side characters which encounters with each other are ignored. Additionally all of the characters are presented so OP, which makes the interaction between them more interesting.
I came across this anime very late clearly 😅😁 , but this is exactly the anime I wanted to see. They actually aren't hyperfocused on a certain "main character". It's how stories of different characters are interlinked in a way. I love the fact that they simultaneously show different progressions in the characters' quests and sometimes even off screen progression occurs. As u mention its a really hard sell for general audience coz lot of em want for/used to story to progress through certain"Main character" POV rather than diff POV's like this show offers.
I watch this anime to hear Takahashi Rie moaning, lol. Weird reason to watch but it is interesting to say the least. Many big star VA in here Yuki Kaji, Yuuki Aoi, Takahashi Rie, Tomokazu Sugita and many more. Even Kisaki VA from Tokyo revengers is in here as a wyvern or something, the red one that like the blind girl.
Ishura is damn good and only a certain crowd can see it, I deem it as above what the average anime watcher can take so I’m not surprised. Probably couldn’t follow shit and/or wanted Soujirou the one who gave the most isekai shonen protagonist vibes to comeback
Tbh, I get it. but don't get it. Why does Ishura have such a low rating. They did something different with the start of the series introducing the characters first while not having any common plot threads which is an interesting approach. Then again, I've always been alright with anthology style books/anime and slow burns have never been an issue for me. It was so worth waiting for when the plot threads of each individual character crossover. I think people need to have more patience and have an open mind to different narrative forms. It just screams "This is the standard form that i'm used to and if it's anything different, then it's bad". Talk about indoctrinated. Where's your sense of curiosity and wonder when entering a new world? Don't get me wrong, Ishura is not perfect or ground breaking by any stretch of the imagination but it does not deserve its low ratings. Especially not when the people rating and writing the reviews did so after 5 episodes. There's so much potential here. The world is intriguing, Characters are flawed yet interesting. Political drama within both factions and charcter ideologies. I'm really excited to see where the story goes in season 2
It would be okay If It was just MAL that gave it a bad rating since I mean look at eminence In shadow that somehow has a 8.2 but people in general on reddit and stuff are also saying it's bad and giving It a 6/10 for no reason after watching 3 episodes. The same people who give ishura that rating are probably the same people who think the eminence in shadow Is a ground breaking anime.
I just saw the trailer for the 2nd season and thought it looked intriguing. Skipped S1, so came here looking to see if it was worth watching. Think I'll give it a go.
There are so many characters with cool titles that it gets really jumbled up and confusing at times. I was binge watching this and left off on episode 8 then came back to it the next day and was confused as to if I left off on the wrong section or something because there's way too much plot that's it's difficult to keep track of it all.
I kinda liked it, but there were so many characters I was constantly confused about who's allied with whom, which city is currently being burned down etc. I could really use a world map with color-coded character icons showing affiliation and current scene location every episode. I'm too dumb, I don't have enough RAM in my brain to remember everything when watching weekly. Maybe I'd have grasped it better had I binged it in one day.
Yea i recommend to binge the whole season 1 in one day when u hve time then u will understand the whole plot of season 1. The most common complaint ive heard is that they are too dumb to follow with whats happening when watching weakly. It gets solved when u binge
my only problem is they glazed each character for 1 to 2 eps just to be killed off screen, knowing world word can just say die and your done is a loop hole, + kia wants no war then why just say no war no killing everyone be happy end of the stupid story.
I watched the first three episodes and decided it might be best to binge it once the season ends. Looking forward to it this weekend once Frieren and Apothecary Diaries wraps up.

00:37 i agree with this statement. There are so many elements that makes the anime so intriguing but falls flat on the execution. I don't really like comparing 2 way different anime with each other, but in this case i can't help but contrast this anime with bocchi the rock adaptation's execution. - BTR has no "elements" that can make the story intriguing, she's just a normal girl with a youtube channel that wants to start a band, i know a lot of people say its not "unique" in that department, but it gained popularity just cause of the phenomenal execution of the anime that makes the show enjoyable to watch. - Ishura on the other hand is the exact opposite of BTR in this context. Ishura is one of the worst garbage anime I've ever seen. Who is it for? It's childish characters with bloody gore and over the top stakes with the dumbest dialogue. it's so bad.
The concept remind me a bit Fate, in the sense that it's a bunch of overpowered heroes trying to murder each over in some kind of battle royal for whatever reason but I didn't like the narrative: at least 6 episodes were dedicated to introduce the cast using random backstories and felt very disconnected.
