@@superstd Agree. Monarchy and Democracy are vastly different. If a king let someone being blatantly disrespectful like that and in front of many people at that, it would actually cause the people to be dissatisfied, since the whole deal of their ruling is 'Chosen by God' thing. I really hate it when writers dumb down monarch's power all for the sake to make the female lead 'quirky'

My favorite part about this movie, that baffles me so much, is their inexplicable decision to _downplay how bad Cinderella's home life is._ Alex already pointed out her absurdly clean, spacious, and brightly-lit basement bedroom, but that's not all.
Cinderella is shown serving the stepfamily breakfast, like, once at the very beginning, and that's basically the only chore we see her do. Meanwhile, the stepfamily is shown out in the yard hanging laundry on the clothesline in _three separate scenes!_ Sure doesn't look like Cinderella's been made a servant in her own home to me!
She's visibly clean as a whistle the whole time too, despite the narrator's claim that they call her Cinderella because she's always covered in soot from the fireplace. Like, bitch where??
Not to mention how she apparently has plenty of money to buy materials for her dresses, infinite free time to hang out in her room and work on said dresses, and no problem at all going out to the marketplace to try and peddle said dresses!
Literally her only problem in life is that she's inexplicably not allowed to be a business owner in this bizarre society that's modern in basically every other way.

    • @redrangerrr558
      @redrangerrr558 2 года назад +170

      Cinderella (1899 short film)
      Cinderella (1911 silent film)
a short film by Disney in 1922 that served as a precursor to the full-length 50s one
Cinderella (first Disney one from 1950)
      Cinderella II
Cinderella III (both sequels to the original)
      Cinderella (the 90s Brandy one)
Cinderella (the 2015 Disney live action adaptation)
      A Cinderella Story (Hilary Duff)
      Ever After (1998)
Another Cinderella Story (2008 Selena Gomez)
      A couple other made-for-TV adaptations in 1957 and 1965
      The Glass Slipper (1955)
The Slipper and the Rose (a 1976 British film)
and that's after like 10 minutes of google research, it looks like there's even more. and probably a lot more movies that follow the tropes but aren't named after it. It is interesting how old the story is but still relatable enough to people for them to adapt it so many times.

The historical accuracy is at -%100, the clothes are made of fabrics that did not exist at the time, the clothes are too modern, and there is sooo much more! Also how did Cinderella get that fancy fabric that could have been too expensive for her? How did she get away with using that fabric and sewing when her steps "hate" her? Why was the prince wearing a useless head scarf?

      1. I dont know how to answer the first thing u said abt the historical accuracy
      2. She got that fancy fabric cus they never said her family was in critical financial difficulties, also when she was making her ball gown, she had previously sold her other dress to the prince at the market, and he had paid x3 of the amount she was originally selling it for
      3. Her stepfamily dont hate her, and in fact, her stepmother mentioned in the movie that she didnt mistreat her out of spite but because she didnt want Cinderella to go through what the stepmother had to go through when she was young
      4. It would actually be different if the prince hadnt worn the headscarf to find Cinderella, cus ig its part of his disguise so people wouldnt recognise him as the prince

I don’t know why people are constantly remaking the same version of Cinderella. There is a version of Cinderella across many cultures.
My personal favorite was a Native American version. Where (spoilers) the “prince” was a magical being where all the women would be tested by his sister. The test was whether or not they could see him (he can turn himself invisible although his sister can see him). The test is asking if the women can see him. They all fail because they all lie, except the “Cinderella” of the story. Because she didn’t lie, she got to marry the “prince”.

Why is it in bad fairytales the characters say “princesses don’t sew, princesses don’t ride horses, princesses don’t do sports and don’t read complex books”. Historically princesses did excellent needle work and were well educated, spoke several languages, were fit and expected to know about their country or the country of their betrothed. They were some of the most intelligent people in the kingdom and would be expected to be able carry on conversations with ambassadors, priests, and have good musical skills. On top of being well dressed and poised. They had access to the best tutors their family could afford. Can we please get more intelligent and witty princesses who take their duty to family and country seriously?

People, including whoever made this movie, apparently always forget that in the original story (and animated Disney movie) Cinderella was LITERALLY suffering emotional abuse. Putting up with that doesn't make her weak--if anything it makes her stronger. (Blaming her for being weak and submissive is literally shaming an abuse victim for struggling to get help). Plus, Cinderella just wanted to go to a ball, escape her wicked family and have fun for once. Like she didn't even realize she danced with the prince until the next day so it's not like she just wanted to be royalty and was seeking him out.
smh I don't know why people keep making Cinderella movies if they're just gonna mock the original source material.

I really HATE this smug look she gives and I also hate when they pull medieval stories half-heartedly into the modern time...
If you want to modernize a fairy tail, do it fully or don't do it at all. Either leave it in it's own timeframe or fully commit to putting it into today like Westside Story did for Romeo and Juliet.
But not freakin' pop-songs and what I assume to be modern fashion in a medival/renaisane movie!
Also fuck off with that self-entitled "power-girl" bullshit where she has to be mean to everyone. That's not charming or empowering, it's just obnoxious. Also how does she go from talking smak to the king - who could literally have her executed for talking back - to being subserviant to her step-mother? Is she meek or bold? Make up your mind!

As literally every human has said: Ever After did Feminist Cinderella first and better. Just slapping a "#GirlBoss" over a trendy celeb of the moment does not a feminist lead make. Danielle was a successful feminist Cinderella because they gave her a passion and goal that wasn't just "succeed at something that aint a man." She was self-taught. She had a political opinion. She had a hobby. She thought outside the box and defied social expectations based on her creativity and resourcefulness, and not just by being your standard nonspecific ceiling-smasher.

@Erwin Lii Still very good. Brandy's Cinderella chose to escape on her own and was caught by the prince leaving. Even that demonstrates an agency most versions don't. I also lile the scene where she says a girl shouldn't be treated like a princess but like a person.
And I get that its okay for girls to like girly things and stuff, but it seems counter intuitive to the GuurlBozz message that Cindy wants to make a career out of shinies and fluffies and pink tulle, but I guess the writers thought they were maling up for ny having the sister sibling take the throne after all (the ending they stole from Coming to America 2).

I agree for the most part. Danielle was an amazing character. But Ever After fell a little flat for me because Danielle was so amazing she didn’t need the Prince at all. She saved herself at every moment. I’m not saying I wanted the Prince to have to save her or for her to be a damsel in distress who needed rescuing, I just wished their relationship was a little more equal. The prince clearly loved her and found her fascinating but she didn’t need him at all. In fact, she was basically his special guide the whole time, the epitome of a wise character who leads the prince to better himself, but who does not change or grow herself. I just wish that we could have seen some kind of change in her that would explain how she grew closer to him and came to feel he was important to her enough that she wanted to marry him, and I don’t feel the movie gave us that.
On the other hand, it has been awhile since I saw the movie so maybe I’m misremembering it. But I have seen it multiple times and each time felt a little disappointed that we couldn’t see why she bonded with him and needed the prince in her life.
Edit: I do agree that Ever After is the best adaptation of this story and Danielle is the best Cinderella.

Getting invited to a ball would be the best thing that could happen to someone then! You get to mingle with the most important people in society, maybe strike up a friendship or business deal. In fact since she wants to be a seamstress, going to a ball would be the best thing for especially wearing a dress she designs. It just shows how dumb they make her in this just for the sake of “throwing off social norms”. How much more interesting would it have been if she gladly went to the ball and we see her catting with people charming them with her intelligence and wit and ends up getting a noble or rich merchant to give her a loan to start her dress shop?

It's so insulting, she had no means to escape her situation and even though she was treated horribly she remained kind to everyone-even the people who treated her like nothing! There is a great video essay, I think it was on a channel called Screen Prism, which talks about how people blaming Cinderella for not leaving her situation sooner is basically victim blaming.

If you want a modern take on Cinderella, A Cinderella Story featuring Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray is great.
If you want a Cinderella to be the heroine there is Ella Enchanted with Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy.
The sequels of the Disney films, Cinderella III: A Twist in Time is a decent animated sequel.
If you want one leaning more to historical there is Ever After with Drew Berrymore.
Even Ever After High had the child of Cinderella, Ashlynn Ella. And she chose her own path.
If you want a Cinderella with diversity,, with the great casting of Brandy, Jason Montalban and Whoopi Goldberg. Go to this one. (Mikai recommended and credit)

I think the reason why she got turned down is that, the woman she started asking was actually that kind of people who looked down on the term that they used which was "peasants". The woman mentioned that she probably just stole from her lady, and planned to even alert the king, without batting an eye for more than a few seconds on the dress. But the prince's sister wore the dress she made and she was just happy to see that.
Although, "Ella" here on the contrast, definitely didn't do any big efforts on facing her problems but just run and "depend" on other people's work. Which was the grandmother, I think dreaming and having a goal in mind but not having the courage yet is fine. That's all.

he is made to stay the night ,to meet the queen next morning. In the evening he bychance meets a women( I don't remember the her name now so let's call her 1). she is a good jolly women and pleasant to talk to and the reporter asks her who she was and she tells she is the queen's stepsister. reporter retorts that she doesn't seem anything like he imagined ,and she replies neither is there queen.
she tells that the story cinderella has been telling the world is not true. the prince and the sisters studied together in the university and he was in love with 1. he frequently visited there household.
cinderella was a attention seeking girl.
they had lot of servants and cinderella didn't actually needed to sleep near the cimeny.
but she loved showing the world that she was poorly treated to gain sympathy of others and one of her sympathizer was her deceased mother's friend who lived nearby

Also the only reason tablecloths were invented was to cover table legs, because men in the Victorian era were said to get aroused because of table legs. Tablecloths were put so that they wouldn't get a boner during dinner. That should tell them not to say "are you in your period" to a woman because atleast women don't get boners for a fucking table.

Hell, the king has a wife who only knows how to party, an arrogant daughter and a spoiled son. In fact, Cinderella practically disrespects him by sitting on top of her dead father's statue. (if it were to take the circumstances of that "macho" realm, he probably would have executed her, but he just reprimanded her while Cinderella continued to pester him). Note: some of you need to calm down. I didn’t say all of you shouldn’t need a man THERE CLEARLY IS NOTHING WRONG HAVING A MAN ON YOUR SIDE OR NOT HAVING THEM IT DEPENDS ON YOU whatever you prefer. The idea of being a badass woman is just toxic these days. If you are rude to someone without no any reason at all and being a bitch you are not savage at all. You just have a trashy attitude and being narcissistic. You can be girly, feminine, soft-hearted, shy, and still be a badass woman if you are strong in mind, having a dream, a weakness and a flaw of yourself that you accept. What I didn't understand in the film was all the drama surrounding Cinderella's impediment of entrepreneurship; since medieval times, poor women were seamstresses and marketed their dresses (out of necessity). There is also the fact that Cinderella's stepmother was left by her husband for knowing how to play the piano as a woman, but playing the piano was considered an act of nobility for women, so noble women were obliged to learn to play. Why wouldn't her husband like that?
Okay, we're giving you the fiction, maybe the historical facts of the time don't match the fantasy of the movie. However, the queen of the kingdom (the prince's mother) spends her free time practicing martial arts, painting and partying, so why couldn't Cinderella spend her time sewing if she were the queen? Or when the prince assumed the throne, he would give women the right to undertake, but not...

Now, don't get me wrong, abuse sucks ass, but it is an important part of Cinderella as a story, and honestly Cinderella getting away from that abuse does make her strong, even if she needed help from the prince to do it. Because, y'know, she was trapped in that household, of course she needed help.

    • @BurgerBoi1
      @BurgerBoi1 3 года назад +9

Yes. I think she's labeled that because she cleand for other people (because she was forced to) instead of for herself and because all her troubles dissapeared because the prince walked in. I still admire her tho, she was mentally strong, kept her head up no matter what, never gave up, and she kinda was able to stand her ground to the stepmother before the prince even came.

I'd like to point out that it was historically the role of the noblewoman to be the castle seamstress, especially in smaller holds. Cinderella being a seamstress would fit nicely into medieval norms.

@@johnnyferalcat896 Even better, a quick google search would have allowed for the knowledge that at the time this should take place women had a limited option of jobs and there was a severe pay gap. This could have allowed for a more interesting premise around the same subject. Mindful, I do think that such a subject should be its own story instead of Cinderella. It's pretty obvious that the writer wanted to tell a different story, thus making the story this should be about shoehorned in.

Kind of tired of the stereotypes they used in yet another movie. 1: let’s shove feminism down peoples‘ throat by making the heroine look smarter and ambitious so we’re going to make her just a brunette

Why is Prince Boring having to convince her to go to the ball?! How come the part that piques her interest is "There will be rich people there"??? The whole POINT was that Cinderella was SO abused and unhappy at home that all she wanted was a beautiful night out to have fun at the ball. And meeting her one true love was an unexpected cherry on top. I can't stand modern writers.

Watching your reviews gives me just enough info to talk with people who HAVE seen the movie, and at the same time, I'm saving the time and irritation I would've gotten from actually watching them. Your reviews are awesome, and for the movies I HAVE seen that you've reviewed, I usually agree with you on most points. That's when I know I've found a good reviewer: when they're not kissing the @$$ of a movie I despised.
