I love that you guys are tackling more Japanese lit!
Industrialization is such an interesting topic. No country seems to go through it quite the same.

I just looked up this novel, thinking it would be Russian epic size, but by the looks of it, this is all packed into a 200-soething size novel. Hearing the whole analysis, and then hearing, it is actually funny, surprised me haha.

It's weird that it's so compact, yet could still feel lows too. It was a great experience

"Japanese June?!?" Now, ya tell me . . . That's a big BIG deal to be on money. James Joyce is on the Irish tenner. On the reverse of the tenner is Sandymount and Martello Tower and when you fold the bill it looks like a big phallus. Joyce might have liked that. Now? Now, back to Nippon! IDK about you fellows but I still have a checking account w _checks!_ No, I don't use em too often but ... Thanks for the education, guys! I would be on level 5: Artisan ⛩️🎌🏯

I'm going to have to glue a cutout of my face to some monopoly money to see what that feels like... :D

Watching this video two daus before my Japanese Litterature Exam since I didn't get my hands on the book.
I would reccomand Soseki talk about modernism (can't remember the exact title sorry) it's really intresting and it explains basically how he thinks that Modernism in Japan wasn't naturnal and for this reason japanese suffer during the proces and there is nothing they can do about it.
Also, Japan modernize himself because they saw all the Asian coutries around them loose to West. In particular, China, that was lime "the strong nation", what they wanted to be.
It was weak, so it was between "be like them (western countrie) or loose"
Also 2.0: in Japan litterature has always been seen as a teaching medium. The idea of novel and "art for art" is really new. So I don't really think Soseki wanted to teach with his books, he was just talking about his ideas and experiences.
Mine are not like corrections, just maube little insight your didn't know. Hope it's not offensive ^^

Thanks for introducing Soseki and this piece of literature to us. I totally agree with the comments after reading the book. While reading it, you feel like watching a Japanese anime. I also read Botchan - Kokoro and Sorekara(trans And Then) on the list. In terms of the storyline of these two, some Murakami flavor, maybe?

….so I only listened to the audiobook narrated by Andrew Koji which made the more awkward parts easier to get through. But he takes a page from anime dubs and gives certain characters parallel accents (he himself being partly ethnically British and having been raised in the UK) which is at times good comic relief IMO
