Been eyeing one of these for a while. You helped me unlock my OP-Z, I dig your style! Hopefully we’ll see more videos of the Octatrack and you can teach us some more!:)
Of course, you can run the Oct in studio mode, the you can use the cue output as an external send, which I use to plug in an Neunaber reverb, etc and now use the internal effects for sound shaping. I wish they would make it offer two mono sends rather than a stereo send - it would be perfect then. I love the Oct - it's the core of my DAWless performance system, triggering external midi as well as sampler duties.
I gotta check out the studio mode once I have a more capable computer to hook it up to. I'd really love to integrate it with Ableton in future. Same here, I love the Octatrack!
Glad I came across this video! Totally respect your straight talk and how as a German, you just “deal” with the negatives upfront. Yes, there are some other great tutorials out there and you are one of them. That little jam at the end was pretty cool. Keep it honest like you do now because we all need that. At least I do. Kudos!
Two months later I bought a Rytm as well, because with 2 trough tracks and two record tracks, there are only 4 tracks left. If you use a master track, then only three And of course the Rytm is an awesome device I it self with a lot of performance options
@@SONWU and it kinda forces your hand and your imagination to focus and let go at the same time! I’m sure you’ll move onto live sampling and mangling in no time!
Re: “Humid environment” = I feel like your CF card might break long before the buttons. Probably a good idea to make regular backups and have a replacement card at the ready.
Nah, the weather here is no joke....there are loads of Ableton Push & KMI K-Mix and such for sale because they all have turned into a sticky mess. Same will happen with the Elektrons in humid environments.
I hear you on the pros of the Octatrack, but I’m not sure you’ve delved into the digitakt enough. It’s an amazing piece of kit. I own both. They each have complimentary features to one another, but the digitakt had a few things that make it a substantially quicker device for a lot of things. The fact that it doesn’t do slice grids makes it pretty sweet for just listening and chopping samples or multiple samples into one track in a more focused way, one thing I feel the Octatrack isn’t as quick at.
Thanks for your input! I guess it really depends on your type of workflow. I am not one of those people that know what to do with a sample before they chopped it. For me, the inspiration comes from having slices and then playing with them...which the Digitakt doesn't really offer...unless of course you sample into each of the 8 tracks. But then it's only 8 slices and already takes more time than doing it on the Octatrack. I think it's a great drum sampler, but for me the DT doesn't do the trick...BUT if they only added a slice mode (implemented like chromatic mode) that would all change!
Great video. Love the OP-Z, and I think I've been luckier than others with my build quality (double triggers constantly, but isn't exploding all the time), but I definitely see its limitations. I've bought Digitakt and like it a lot, but I think Octatrack is where I really want to eventually land. I'll definitely be checking back in to see what you do with it!
Maybe I‘ve been trashing the Digitakt and OP-Z a bit harshly…they are good devices for sure. These devices will always have pros and cons, and either one can cope with them or not. Digitakt was not for me, the OP-Z is for me…some people hate the Octatrack and I can understand that too. But for me the OT is just great to get creative with :) enjoy your gear!
@@SONWU Oh no, I think the criticism is fair! If the OP-Z had the build quality of the OP-1 it'd be worth every penny, but it is annoying to have to baby it and check it every so often for bends or warping. I'm glad you got the OT, I'll be excited to see your future OT beats. That slider looks like a lot of fun!
I enjoyed listening to the whole thing while driving. Glad you played a beat at the end. I look forward to beat making videos with the octa. I lol’d at the comment about being German means accepting negatives.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it…was a bit weird for me to talk so much, but why not change it up once in a while. Anyway, music will follow! Have a great day! PS: Because my wife is not German, I get a lot of my Germanness pointed out to me 😄
I like how you threw in that midi chord pack bash. You'd think people would just want to make their own music, but sadly they want the computer to do it for them all together.
Yeah, I don’t know what’s up with he music industry and hobby. Different strokes, for different folks I guess…but if this just deters one person from buying these packs, I am happy :)
When slicing can you only play one slice of a sample at a time on one track? Like a automatic choke group or can you slice one sample, assign each slice to a key and play them at the same time?
Good question, YES you can only play one slice at a time on one track. Of course you could copy that track (including it’s sample/slices) and then layer more slices if you like.
I like Teenage Engineerings playful design philosophy ..but the build quality makes it feel like a budget device with a top tier price point. That’s why my money goes to Elektron, since their flagships don’t skimp on build quality. I want all my investments to potentially last a lifetime.
😂 I guess I was grumpy that day and had seen one too many of those street fighter vs thumbnails…I am a fan of Street Fighter though. However, nothing beats Super Punch-Out!
If you like the feel of the mk1, you are lucky…loads of money to be saved :) I agree on the buttons, the OG's feel good…but the potentiometers not so much.
Thank you! Overbridge is why I got the Digitakt first too…but I realized I need more of the OTs features. Very different machines to me. But I am happy to hear you are happy with your Digitakt!
Everybody has other preferences. To me it really comes down to workflow and where your focus is. MPC One: great effects, synth engines, basically full DAW in a box…but too much touchscreen, bad step sequencer, better for live recording IMHO Octatrack: more sampling options & sampling on specific steps (great feature not in the MPC) great step sequencer workflow (p-locks and stuff), not too many options, yet very open-ended and flexible So in the end, very different machines!

Thanks, that’s nice to hear that my videos helped you. There will be. More Octatrack videos, that’s a promise :)

You have to try using the scene slider - you'll fall of your chair when you try it :)

Thanks for the nice feedback! There are already enough people selling synths out there...so I do my best to be objective :)

For me, it will be the A4 which I’ll add at some point.
Great vid! Glad to see you are in the OT family.
Thanks, happy to be a member👊
Yooo, I was not expecting that at end 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks man!
There it is! Great walkthrough and excellent jam⚡
Heyyyy! Thanks for stopping by ✌️more music coming soon!
I really love the fact the OT is getting me to make sampling a priority.

I hope so 🤞

Thanks! I think this sunday I will post a beatmaking video with it.
Great commentary!
Thanks! Next one is gonna be a proper beat making video on it.
I cannot wait to land my hand on this machine man
I bet, I was so excited when the order was finally put in…a lot of back and forth before that :)

Elektron built (apart from rubberized anything) + teenage engineering ease of use would be a winner.
Tell us how you really feel about the OpZ :D I'm glad I never bought one.
That’s good…I am glad I still have one :)
wait street fighter references? is my homie SON WU a Street Fighter???
I myself am obsessed and currently loving SF6
😂 I guess I was grumpy that day and had seen one too many of those street fighter vs thumbnails…I am a fan of Street Fighter though. However, nothing beats Super Punch-Out!
Your beat is awsome !
Thank you 🙏
mki has a nicer buttons :B (if you don't need the balanced inputs)
If you like the feel of the mk1, you are lucky…loads of money to be saved :)
I agree on the buttons, the OG's feel good…but the potentiometers not so much.
Nice review! I prefer the digitakt though thanks to overbridge. Much better for my Ableton based workflow
Thank you! Overbridge is why I got the Digitakt first too…but I realized I need more of the OTs features. Very different machines to me.
But I am happy to hear you are happy with your Digitakt!
@@SONWU yes indeed! I use the digitakt as a drum machine and not as a complete all in 1 audio station as you do with the OT
It’s perfect for that application 👍
Great video for a great gear. And you're right : be creative with the "circle of fifth", don't buy midi chords packs !
THANKS! yup, midi chords packs are not welcome here ;)
Shout out to the Messy Desk.
Ayeeee!
What about MPC One? Better machine in my opinion
Everybody has other preferences. To me it really comes down to workflow and where your focus is.
MPC One: great effects, synth engines, basically full DAW in a box…but too much touchscreen, bad step sequencer, better for live recording IMHO
Octatrack: more sampling options & sampling on specific steps (great feature not in the MPC) great step sequencer workflow (p-locks and stuff), not too many options, yet very open-ended and flexible
So in the end, very different machines!
I had the MPC live and those pads are amazing, until they start auto triggering. Mine couldn’t be repaired and thus I got the Octatrack.
@@FuZZbaLLbee Got there in the end!
