My all-time favourite Yes album is Tales From Topographic Oceans. Here are my 1969-1978 rankings: 1.Tales From Topographic Oceans 2.Going For The One 3.Relayer 4.Close To The Edge 5.Yes 6.The Yes Album 7.Fragile 8.Time And A Word 9.Tormato
10. 90125 9. Drama 8. Mirror To The Sky (yes, it’s that good) 7. Tormato 6. The Yes Album 5. Going For The One 4. Fragile 3. Relayer 2. Close To The Edge 1. Tales From Topographic Oceans
Truth be told I have only ever heard one song from 90215, yes, that song. Maybe I'll sit down and listen to the entire album one day. I just might like it as much as you do.
The beauty about the first two YES albums was Bill Buford's jazz drumming holding it down... Squire, Banks kicked it, too. Their prog from The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales, Relayer, and yes, the rockin' Tormato... gives a listen. Pizza on Erf.
I have it on good authority that anyone who ranks Magnification in their top five Yes albums will be counted among the great sages and sup with the gods for a thousand days. So you're in good shape there. In my top five I also have The Ladder, Tormato, Tales from Topographic Oceans and Close to the Edge. What's that? Oh alright, Going for the One--you can be in the top five too. We'll just hope no one counts.
For a top ten... 1. The Yes Album (flawless and I kind of like it that the keyboards are not so up front all the time) 2. Fragile (beauty, love the sound of it too) 3. Drama (surprisingly good, heavy and I ended up really loving Tempus Fugit) 4. 90125 (it got me into them, and after discovering the rest of what they had back then, what a surprise) 5. Close To The Edge (what's not to like) 6. Relayer (it took a while to get into Gates, but my fave part is the up building part right after chaos and right before Soon) 7. Tales From Topographic Oceans (a beautiful mind trip) 8. The Ladder (uplifting and you can hear they loved making it) 9. Fly From Here (I like Benoit David way better than Jon Davison, who I find emotionless) 10. Union (it's two bands really and both are good, never understood the hate) Now the rest is not bad, some exceptions... Live they were awesome. Keys 1 and 2, Yesshows, Yessongs... excellent.
Fragile and Close To The Edge are my favorites...There is an album by a psychedelic band called, Tomorrow, featuring Steve Howe that is classic 60s psychedelia. The song from that album that stands out the most is, White Bicycle.
I'm not as familiar with the post-90125 albums so it would be unfair to rank them. My Top 10 would be: 1. Close to the Edge 2. Going for the One 3. Fragile 4. The Yes Album 5. Relayer 6. Drama 7. 90125 8. Time and a Word 9. Debut 10. Tales (have to be in the mood) And, yes, I have to give the later albums a chance.
I have had a couple of short conversations with Rick and been a great fan of his for a very long time. However, did not have the heart to tell him that may favourite Yes album he hated, and my second favourite he was not even on. Not that he cares what I think, but he is quite a big guy.
I guess I need to give "Relayer" and "Tales From Topographic Oceans" another shot. I remember borrowing them from my public library in the late '80's. And they just went over my head. I was so bored by them. 😁😆 I like the two '80's Jon Anderson Yes albums a lot more. "90125" was my introduction to Yes, so I think of it very highly. I didn't really like anything after "Big Generator", I was into many other artists. And Yes weren't being played on the radio or on music videos anymore, so I just forgot about them. Plus, as you said "Big Generator" was a disappointment, after "90125". I like half of it, though. I also have two Yes compilation albums. Based on the small portion of the Yes studio discography I have, this is my Top 6 Yes albums: (1) The Yes Album (2) Close To The Edge (3) Fragile (4) 90125 (5) Going For The One (6) Big Generator I recently got the standalone releases of the "Union 30 Live" 2 CD/ DVD sets from "Shoreline" and "Denver". "Shoreline" has 16 songs on 2 CD's, but "And You And I" is cut by half. And the "Drums Duet"/ "Changes" segment comes from another show. 12 of the songs are on the DVD. You'll be happy that the two "Union" songs are cut from the DVD. 😁 Plus the two previously mentioned tracks. The DVD has pretty good sound and very good picture quality (for a 1991 concert shot on video in SD). "Denver" has the full 18 song show, on CD and DVD. But, the video is in "good" bootleg quality, and the audio suffers from strange mixing choices. Sometimes you only hear one guitar or one voice. But, it is pro-recorded, and you get two songs not on the "Shoreline" set, "Hold On" and "Long Distance Runaround". And you get a full performance of "And You And I". I still enjoyed it, despite its drawbacks.
Albums that I love: Yes, Time And A Word, The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans, Going For The One, Drama, 90125, Magnification, Keystudio, Fly From Here. Albums that I like or think are Ok: Relayer, Tormato, Big Generator, Talk, Keys 1 and 2, The Ladder, Mirror To The Sky. Albums I do not like: Union, Open Your Eyes, Heaven and Earth, The Quest.
I have Tormato on vinyl and after reading all the reviews saying it was their worst '70s album I almost sold it. But I couldn't- it had Rick Wakeman on it. Maybe I am more a Rick Wakeman fan as I did not really like Relayer ( with Patrick Moraz) that much. His solo album was not my cup of tea either. I has seen Wakeman live back in 1975's " Journey To The Center of the Earth " tour, but never ever seen Yes live.
you covered the butt on going for one but not the boobs on time and a word.. shame on you larry😔 (i’m only joking haha) good list, i’ve always loved yes but lately they’ve been more hit or miss for me, some albums i love and some are just not for me, but it’s nice to see you give love to topographic oceans, an album i don’t particularly enjoy but i really appreciate. my favorites are Close to the Edge, Fragile, Relayer, Talk, and the Ladder

Yes, it is being remastered and being released this year, or maybe it is already out.
The Yes Album and Relayer would be my favorite two and I also enjoy 90125.

I'm always amazed that Tormato isn't loved by most Yes fans. It's easily my second favorite Yes album. Tales for me is also #1.
Love Tales! My favorite Yes album, followed by Tormato.

1. Close
2. Relayer
3. Fragile
4. Yes album

Yes! At last! That is all. (Thanks, as always!)

Don't give up on Union. Lots of good stuff on there, like silent Talking , Take the water..., Shock to the System
Close To The Edge is my number one, followed by The Yes Abum, Tales at three,…great video….see you at 7:00!!!
I can get into half of union but I never get into open your eyes but the rest I do like from jon Anderson
I’ve heard so soooo much good stuff about The Ladder. I need to give it a chance
It is really lovely and very uplifting. That's one of the things Yes do really well. It is a fun album and the vibe is great.
I have Tormato on vinyl and after reading all the reviews saying it was their worst '70s album I almost sold it. But I couldn't- it had Rick Wakeman on it.

Favorite YES album for me:
GOING FOR THE ONE
Favorite YES song: PARALLELS
YES has always been a fine band to just put the headphones on and lose myself to...
Oh, and I still find DRAMA a surprisingly good record.
Union is good
if yes had a better lead singer they would had been bigger..
Um.... right.
Thats just what make them special and unique
@@mathiasriff Yes.
"Drama" might be a "great" album, but it's not a YES album. No Anderson, no YES.
