  • I was curious on how much difference there is between my three 6V6 power tube guitar amps.
Guitar: Gibson Les Paul standard 50's
    Amps:
REVV D20 (~$1000 USD in 2024 - head only - add ~$650 for speaker cab if you need one)
Mesa Boogie California Tweed 2:20 (~$1700 USD in 2024 - head only - add ~$650 for cab)
    Fender 5E3 57 Custom Deluxe (~2600 USD in 2024 - combo - Hard Wired)
Using the same guitar, same licks and same speaker (amp sims - two notes) for clean and amp distortion. I did a quick test with an SM57 at the end for the Fender Custom Deluxe
REVV D20 is kind of its own thing - fantastic value with the built in loadbox and Two Notes torpedo cab simulation. You don't really need a speaker cabinet if you are just using for recording and you have studio monitors etc. It is nice to ear the sound that will be recorded from the studio monitors directly.
The two "tweed" type amp sound similar to me. I would dial down the amp distortion a bit. It was almost Fuzz like at those levels (pretty much at max gain and volume).
Anyways, just a quick test. Lots of fun with any of those amps. Keep in mind that the Fender 5E3 is quite expensive, loud and is the amp with the least features. I do not regret buying any of those amps and I use them everyday - along with my other Mesa Boogie - Mark five 25 which is its own thing.
