Bro, my wife is been asking me for planters for her veggies for half year, today I took the measurement and got the wood and I'm like "who is the man, yeah"
Just what I needed while being one of those builders trying to finish my home after 15yrs ...3 kids later etc etc ....fantastic breakdown of all it takes to get through a project like this ....having that 800k nest egg which you guys worked and saved for probably made all the difference...and all power to you josh ...its motivating and inspirational...and realistic ....much appreciated. The detailed explanation you put at every stage of the construction is incredible. It's like I'm back at uni again listening to construction lectures. The video didn't even feel like an hour! Can't believe this is free. Thank you!
Mate, greetings from Australia, I live in the Blue Mountains and am currently looking “upgrading the house” and have been wanting to find a builder show the process of something that isn’t a cookie cutter. Love the video brother and you’ve given me heaps of insight. Thank you!! And all the best for your channel! 🙌
This is the best building channel by far in my humble opinion. I watch a lot of this stuff. I love the way you set out this video. The breakdown of the build. The way you handle any drama and the positive way you handle any problems. The editing, the music the filming is all top notch. The attention to detail. They way you plan is brilliant. Thanks also for showing how much paperwork there is on a project like this. Thanks for your time and efforts on this and your other videos. It's crazy that you have time to set up your recording equipment and record and plan your video while doing all of this. It blew me away how you handled the shutdown during this build what a nightmare. I really enjoyed this video so informative and entertaining. Cheers.
That was so cool Josh. Super enjoyed the one video, I watched it over a couple days. I also have gone through a bespoke house during Covid in Wellington City. Was super nice to watch others go through much the same and tbh, was a bit moving at the end to think I have done what your video shows is such a special thing! Feels like building a house prevents a mans mid life crisis! We are 2.5 years in and that to do list keeps going... and I never want that to stop now! Josh, you impacted my life here man watching this one, TU.
Friend in high school lost his big toe that way but somehow gained more balance on the football field without it, called him 9 toe ty, hope you're feeling better and are thankful for it not being as bad.
Im glad you were honest about the finances and background at the end! I can only dream of being able to build my own home at the moment, but watching videos like this where the builder is upfront and honest about what it takes helps me get a little bit closer to my own dream, especially with my own experience and background. Congrats on the home, you did an amazing job! :)
Hey mate, love this stuff. There is so much to consider in raising a home out of the ground, especially one with an odd site layout. The experiences you've captured here on film are possibly the most invaluable resources for anybody looking at building their own home. The planning and preparation stages as busy and overwhelming as they are, never seem to cover all the potential curve-balls regarding mother nature, and the human component. Hats off to builders everywhere, not many careers out there can compare with the mental and physical stress of running a building outfit. Sincerely, a relatively stress-free plumber
This is better than any dream home build video I’ve ever seen. And the cherry on top is that i’m from Upper Hutt too!!! Thank you for this very informative video, I can’t wait for the Silverstream build content!
DIY to the highest level. Love that its in the Hutt! There's lots of skills involved here. No average Joe can do that. Even the editing and story telling was on the next level!
The skylights over the kitchen area make such a difference Josh! Had my foot under the mower too cobber, but with steel caps on, brought back memories and made me flinch. It is taking off the boot for the first time that is the most stressful. I'll bet that taught your children a lesson, or at least I hope it did . :):) !!
Wow, my family lives in New Zealand and Im myself is in Nordic Europe, its very interesting to see how the construction differentiates so much. The floor insulation, timber construction, light wall insulation, the soft flooring! Amazing and beautiful building, was fun to watch!
Hey Brother! Stoked as for you man! I remember back around covid when i first come across your page and now today coming across it again! your page has grown so much keep up the good work man! so cool! consistency really does pay off. proud random right here hahah
It's a shame only a handful of people are interested in videos like this. This is absolutely phenominal. I'm blow away by the amount of work you put into this. This video has been in the making for a loooooong time. The fack that you damaged you foot is already at least 3 months of not doing much. Congrats!!!!!
I love watching your house building journey. Thanks for sharing everything in such detailed, entertaining and informative way. I hope your toe has recovered and you're enjoying your new home. Well done! My husband and I are working on our outdoor landscaping project at the moment so using some of your ideas as inspiration. We are also long term looking at building a bigger home like your with a studio self contained area, media room and gym/spa area.
Man, i am no builder or home owner but your video is super inspiring and the layout design you did is so much smarter than any other house I have seen. I also love how you just keep up your work no matter what happened. You are surely the guy that i am looking for to work with building my dream home ❤.
Awesome educational material for my own dream project. Thank You! Your message at the end is right on the mark. Full points for the wrap up of your costs. As a landscaper I know getting us in before the build is a smart move. Our vision can sometimes reconsider the interior outlook and flow.
Amazing video man! I don't comment a lot, and i had this video recommended for few weeks. And I decided to watch it today and boy.... I kept watching it form the beginning till the end and I loved every bit of it. The fun thing about this video and especially at the end, that it applies to practically everyone that wants to achieve their dreams and goals in life. Don't give up just beccause you got a set back. Because the universe will test you, that if you really want to achieve that dream, you will get set back to test how bad you want it. Because the rewarding part of it, is something you can not imagine how good it feels and what joy and happiness it will give you. So yes, start now working for that dream, set goals with it. Because dreams are just dreams, without goals.
phenomenal! Great to see a frank and candid breakdown of the work involved, the skills required, sacrifices and ultimately the final costs. The only question i have is ... while you had saved your butt off and planned to be dedicated to the project for a year, was your wife working and bringing in "some" income to offset the loss of earnings or was it possible without the need for that?
That looks really nice! I also build my dream house in a dream neightborhood a few years ago and I can't even describe the feeling when you see something, that was only an idea in a CAT software slowly progressing to be an actual thing. I couldn't implement a few things (door from house to garage and kitchen big enough for a kitchen island), that I originally wanted in that house, but it turned out that one of the contractos was selling his house, that had these things and it was a really good price, so I bought it without even thinking too much.
Thank you for sharing your journey, I am so happy that you managed to achieve your dream like this. I hope you get a chance to make many wonderful memories in this house for a long time to come.
I loved watching your build from start to finish and like @konFry said This was like 10x better than most episodes of Grand Designs, you gave it your own Grand Design finish, and I wonder if the grand design people will get pissed off with you using their music, either way, I loved it. Thanks, Josh and yes I have subscribed. I look forward to seeing more of your content.👍
What a rough start, mate! A mower blade to the foot-yeah, nah, that’s brutal. Ouch! Building issues and setbacks feel like standard practice these days, but they’re definitely tricky to factor into quotes, haha. Outstanding dedication and professional quality! Incredible work, Josh-well done and congratulations! Best of luck with your future endeavors! I’ll definitely be checking out all your future content. I had never watched a build video before, but I loved this one, probably because it was made with such love for the build. Amazing to watch someone with great skills and experience do their thing.
Thank you so much for sharing your projects. It is impressive and passionating to see how a house is build step by step. As a Building Designer student in Australia it helps me to understand the whole process of building a house and it helps me going forward in my studies.
Another xgreat video Josh, really love the summary at the end of what you’d do different and do more of. Merry Christmas mate, hope you have a safe and happy break
This is great. We built 3 years ago with all the rona malarkey going on and GIB shortages, and it was a bit stressful, but watching this I’d really like to build again using all the lessons learned from last time. It’s kind of addictive, I just wish I could do the building myself, I think I could too.
Kiwi living in sydney getting fomo watching this. Really cool video, would love to watch and learn more about the things to look for when building / buying a home. Hearing about the proactive decision making and rational during your build was super insightful too. Especially the things you'd do differently section - great work and beautiful looking home!
Good on ya, mate. I grew up on a dairy farm way up North, and got stuck in. That's just the way it works. Think a bit, make some plans, rip into it, and no messing around. Kiwis are a practical bunch.
Tu make Josh, thank you for being such a detailed presentation, fully enjoyed it. Bloody neat alright, great work. My dad was a chippie his entire life. Always remember hed always respond to be modest about being on to it. "You get that on the big jobs". You're so on to it brother 😊 look forward to more footage.
Hey Josh, amazing build! I have no idea about building and you made it look amazing during the entire video. Just so that you know, you forgot to add the link in the description for the building resources. I wish you all the best!
I love the Bro is giving a much better look at building a house than I've seen for a while (and in NZ ) - I have been wanting to design and build my own place for sometime - bank roll is what is stopping me at the moment - Thanks for the insights Josh!
Wow, you’re incredibly handy man, Josh. Big thumbs up, awesome home for you and your family. Greetings from Czech Republic (opposite side of the world 😎 )
Thank you sharing your journey. We also building our dream home to the land we bought 5 years ago, it’s also sloped land. Waiting years because of the council process. And now we are waiting to fix the contract from the builder and loan from the bank. My excitement is fading.
Kia ora bro, I’ve always been interest in property + want to become an investor one day. I’ve already been able to work on a couple of renovations effectively as an apprentice before, but wanted to see the whole process of building from start to finish. It’s absolutely fascinating how complex it can be, and I enjoyed watching this video. Your efforts do not go unnoticed because I know how bloody long it takes to film and video edit as well haha.
This is such a great building channel, and I really enjoyed this video. The way you break down the build and address challenges with a positive attitude is impressive. I also liked how you showed the amount of paperwork involved-it's something many people don’t realize goes into projects like this. The filming and editing are excellent as always, and it’s amazing how you juggle recording everything while still keeping the build on track. I did notice the slope leading into the garage door, though, and it got me thinking-have you considered adding some protection or a way to divert water in case of heavy rain? It might help prevent potential issues with water getting into the garage. Just a thought! Thanks again for putting together such an informative and entertaining video. Cheers!
This is absolutely amazing I loved following your journey with making your home. It truly is astonishing what you've been able to bro. Amazing build and amazing storytelling. She's a beauty!
What a fantastic blog and explanation. Really awesome to watch such an inspirational blog and especially being a kiwi builder. Definitely following you👍👍
Great job. I can see why so many saw that site as too much. You're a super builder and very positive when sharing . Cant wait to see your next home build. How is your wife and kids feeling about another build???
Hi! Thank you for such a wonderful video - it’s incredibly inspiring, especially during these difficult times for me. My father dreamed of building a house, but after his passing, our family plans fell apart, and I lost the motivation to work. However, after the war (there is a war in my country now), I have a strong desire to achieve this goal and continue the path my father started. Thank you so much for this inspiring video! 🙏✨
Mate - this was an amazing build, loved the content. My 2c is keep it authentic, keep it raw vs polished - that's what will separate you from the rest.
Awesome video Josh! Amazing mahi and you and your family must absolutely love what you've created. Can't wait to see more content and that new project. Really love the advice on absorbing and working through all the information and decision making. Te meke stuff!
Amazing work, so happy for you that this all worked out so well. I have a ~400sqm section behind my house in Lower Hutt that I might use to attempt something like this. I lack most of the skills you employed here, but may be a good learning project.
This is my first time watching your videos. it appeared on my For You page, so I clicked out of curiosity while working on my second monitor. Little did I know, I’d end up completely hooked and watching the whole thing! Amazing video. 🇸🇦
I can't believe I watched this whole thing, so good. My only real suggestion is to add in time frame indicators as text through the video along with the title of what you're doing. Indicate how far along in the build things are being done because it's hard to know how long its been between installing cladding and bats etc (3 months, 4 months etc ). Also would have been cool if you estimated how much this would cost for someone who didn't have your skills and needed to pay someone to do it all, which would be a nice comparison for someone unskilled buying this difficult section and going this route vs a section more easy to work on. Good luck with the next build!
Love from germany, I have no clue about building a house, much more less about building a house in new zealand. But that was a great journey! Had much fun watching it :) Cheers!

That must be a NZD$1,000,000+ house today.
Easily over that amount.
@@Jaymoss100 Real easy. Maybe 1.5M.
Product cost would only be 500
At 1:04:30 He said its valued in mid ones so $1.5M

Definitely adding some led lights under the stairs would give it the home a very sleek modern look 👍👍🤗
What a fantastic blog and explanation. Really awesome to watch such an inspirational blog and especially being a kiwi builder. Definitely following you👍👍
Love seeing how things are done after consent approval. End result looks amazing 🤩
Great job. I can see why so many saw that site as too much. You're a super builder and very positive when sharing . Cant wait to see your next home build. How is your wife and kids feeling about another build???
I like how you explained about the different parts and blueprints
u can still change the doors and u can let the under need get foamed up so it get stronger and less noise
oh wow, absolutely love it. The outside was especially well done.
Congratulations on your project coming together so well and that next project land looks very spicy and beautiful. Awesome channel
you can do it
I always wear steel cap gumboots when doing the lawns, I have done this once before but thank god I had them on
Mate - this was an amazing build, loved the content. My 2c is keep it authentic, keep it raw vs polished - that's what will separate you from the rest.
wow what a beautiful outcome! Congratulations Josh!
that 2:46 line is crispyyyy
Freehand like a boss :)
I watched that four times, just amazed at how on point and crisp those lines were! 🤯
Watched the whole video - never watched a house build before, brilliant.
Awesome video Josh! Amazing mahi and you and your family must absolutely love what you've created. Can't wait to see more content and that new project. Really love the advice on absorbing and working through all the information and decision making. Te meke stuff!
Aha Silverstream, back closer to Stokes Valley!!!! Great to watch and again see local natural bush. Good memories. Thanks. Laurie. NZ. 😊
Amazing work, so happy for you that this all worked out so well. I have a ~400sqm section behind my house in Lower Hutt that I might use to attempt something like this. I lack most of the skills you employed here, but may be a good learning project.
Great video Josh...wow incredible job. Dealing with problem solving at the beginning. .. beautiful home....you don't need the Grand Design snobs
I don't know how this hit my algorithm but I'm glad it did. Awesome work!
mind blowing result man, keep up the work!!
Primo!!! Can’t wait to learn heaps from your next series!
This is my first time watching your videos. it appeared on my For You page, so I clicked out of curiosity while working on my second monitor. Little did I know, I’d end up completely hooked and watching the whole thing! Amazing video. 🇸🇦
Thanks for watching - I am stoked you liked it - subscribe for more epic content :)
The youtube algo just sent me your channel. Your house is beautiful and the new site looks amazing.
Abstract builds like that are so awesome.
Love from germany, I have no clue about building a house, much more less about building a house in new zealand. But that was a great journey! Had much fun watching it :)
Cheers!
