- In 1987, we were fortunate enough to go to Mumbai and interview many Bollywood Stars. During that visit, we got to meet the "Up and coming" actress, Neelam. At this point, she had 4 film releases, one being a hit with the then heartthrob, Govinda. We were able to interview Neelam on the set of "Ghar Main Ram Gali Main Shyam"
The questions asked in a 1987 interview are 100 times more progressive and intellectual than the questions asked in today's bollywood interviews

Actually she had a very strong accent then coz she had just started out in Bollywood now in her 50s she obviously has a much Indian accent
If she was born in Hong Kong, it was a British colony at that time. No doubt she studied O and A level exams and went t the UK for further studies. I’m from the UK and she clearly has a British accent, at least she did at the time of this interview.
She doesn't have a typical British accent. It's a 'global' accent that leans towards British pronounciation , with a dash of Indian and American syllables.

She studied in an American and British school both in Hong Kong and Bangkok. Her accent is British it’s not fake and nothing Indian about it. English spoken in Mumbai is totally different.. Hindi came into her life after she joined movies. Her voice was dubbed in Jawaani her first movie. She sounds exactly the same in her Netflix show today, 30 years later!
She looks so damn cute and speaks so well..She deserved a lot more,should have worked with better directors and actors.

Watched her on 'The Fab Life of Bollywood Housewives' recently, where she again stands out as classy, gentle and absolutely stunning! She defo still has that compelling screen face and presence.

I still sometimes watch her songs and remember those old days which were so beautiful. I always watch her song "dil behalta hain mera aapke aa jaane se". I still like her a lot. I am 44 now.

Not many know this,..way back in the 80's and in the beginning of 90's , Neelam Kothari and Mithun Chakraborty were the Only brand ambassadors for National Panasonic for South Asia. That was a time when National Panasonic had not entered india and most of its products were imported via Gulf or east asia,..but still National Panasonic signed up Neelam and Mithun among the lot of hindi movie stars. Both had a very long stint(may be close to a decade) in promoting the Japanese product in india and it was a win win situation for the actors and for the electronics giant when it comes to Electronics brand promotion by movie stars, which was unheard of in india at that pre liberalisation era..
she was a good actress but never went out of her way to self-promote. I think today's actresses are far worse in acting but know very well how to promote themselves.

I actually like the questions. Very to the point.
This was in the 80s bro... different era and style..
She was successful but not the one to carry a movie on her shoulders like Sri Devi or Madhuri Dixit.A suave beauty. People know her for pairing with Govinda but she gave good movies with Chunky Pandey also.
When the Khans came she was still young but she was considered their senior. She stil acted opposite Aamir, Salman and Saif but all flopped even when their pairing was nice. All the 80's heroines Farah, Neelam, Kimi, Sonam stopped working at the same time.
She was extremely innocent and quite genuine, in contrast to the apolitical commentaries made by the existing actors . She was quite patient and overall a nice personality!!!!!

Her voice was dubbed in Jawaani and Love 86…In 2 years , she worked hard on her Hindi and acting ….and voila!!! After 2 movies , look at her Hindi diction and acting in ILZAAM , Sindoor, etc….Today’s foreigner actresses like Katrina , Jacqueline have all the facilities of tutor , producer friends , social media , internet and still they can barely speak Hindi
