    I brought home 2 8-week old Aussie puppies, not knowing what littermate syndrome is. I talked to my dog trainer after bringing them home and she told me to read up about it, and of course I felt like an idiot. She's assured me that we will work through it, doing things like what you mentioned: separate crates, seperate potty time, separate walks, separate outings, etc. They need to form individual bonds with us and then later in life they can live in harmony together.

I have 3 females, all mixed races, two of them are sister and while one is completely normal the other one is more like a fox than a dog (in fact of behavior) it’s very hard to per her, she doesn’t listen, she is impossible to train they fight A LOT and all that stuff, I thought she was born like this so I accepted it but I could have never imagined it was our fault! Great video, my two basset hounds aren't littermates, but they are family. Because my first basset was bread about 4 years ago. They kept my bassets sister. Then, 3 years later they bread my basset hounds sister. We then adopted a basset from that litter. So my first basset it the half aunt of my second basset. :)

    As somebody studying dog behavior right now, I totally get the idea of waiting until your pups are fully vaccinated to take them out in public. The one thing I kind of see a problem with your idea of being fully socialized at home is that in your home you have so many things going on! You've got other dogs, pigs, birds, tons of farm animals, cats, etc. But if somebody is bringing home an 8-week old puppy to a house where it is the only animal, that could lead to problems if they aren't exposed to those sorts of things. Also a potential for problems with exposure to children. What if somebody doesn't have any children in their family or have any friends/neighbors with children? You have no way of introducing your dog to children if they aren't taken out in public. So I think home socialization would work great for some people, but it's not exactly something that I think should be recommended to everyone. I've raised my dogs both ways and have always had better results with ones that I have taken out in public (however I don't recommend 'pet' places like dog parks or pet stores just because of the high likelihood that you'll either run into another dog with behavioral problems or an unvaccinated dog), but I took my pup for walks downtown and had people of all ages pet her and things like that.

    • @HappyTailsAnimals
      @HappyTailsAnimals  6 лет назад +8

      It may be easier for me, but if you put in the effort you can socialize at home. Something as simple as a vacuum can be a good tool for training.

      @@FFACanineWelfare Socialization: the keyword is social. Socialization pertains to being around other beings such as animals or humans. Desensitization is getting a dog so used to a stimuli that it doesn't disturb them.

    • @bigboizinc.1.034
      @bigboizinc.1.034 2 года назад

      @@JimiInTheJungle Well that makes no sense at all because socializing and animal isn't just about them meeting other dogs and people. Yes, that is a small part of it but taking your dog out to different places and sceneries is also a part of socialization and yet that has nothing to do with people or other animals it has to do with the environment around you and your dog. Going on a hike or to an outdoor café or even down your neighborhood is socialization for a dog especially a new puppy. I've seen many people not socialize their dogs correctly and end up wanting to take their dog somewhere as an adult where it's very busy and the dog is not able to cope with all of these new scenarios. Eventually making the dog either fearful, aggressive, or scared. Therefore, no socialization is not ONLY with humans and other dogs but socialization is also only one part in training a dog.

    Im not gunna lie, im slightly obsessed with corgi's at the moment, and those massive ears are so cute :) I do wonder whether litter mate syndrome applies to other animals. I bought my two chinchillas together and they were sisters and never really full tamed, they sort of kept to themselves and didn't like human interaction.

    • @HappyTailsAnimals
      @HappyTailsAnimals  6 лет назад +3

      I think it's different than littermate syndrome, but you can see a difference in an animal's behavior when they are raised with members of their species, vs just human companionship. I think it's less problematic than it is with dogs, but can be an issue in some species. Horse's need one on one training and can be very flighty when only raised with other horses. But then animals like alpacas accept human interaction better when in large groups. Then there is deer, where males who are raised with humans then challenge humans and becoming extremely dangerous when they reach sexual maturity. I guess animals are just kind of weird.

    • @tyrander1652
      @tyrander1652 6 лет назад +1

      At a period in a puppy's development it imprints on the individuals around it making up its pack. If those are rabbits it will grow up communicating as a rabbit and be unable to communicate with dogs. For best behavior with people you want the dog to imprint on humans and understand human communication. If the dogs is raised with two different species it will learn more from the species it is around more. If a puppy is brought into a family with older dogs, those dogs know human communication, but if you have two puppies that only know "dog" they will teach each other what little they know (Lord of the Flies style) unless the human does a lot of work to counter it. Raising a puppy or dog around other dogs makes it more difficult to make it into a well behaved dog, but puppy +puppy is much worse.
      People are not communicating with other pet species the way they are with dogs.

      I need help I have 2 goldendoodle they are sisters and they are 7 months and I have one dog for a month before I got the other dog. I have them eat together, sleep together, train together cause I am the only person who takes care of them and I read and seen video that says like that’s how you will prevent littermate syndrome. And they are great with each other and other dogs but the only think is one of them snaps sometimes and I correct her and the other dog gets scared and the one that attacked she feels bad and kisses her to make up for it. And they are good sleeping in a crate together, they are good eating next to each other like they will switch bowls, and training them together it’s good. But now I’m all worried that I’m doing things wrong and I was to do fix the way I’m going things incase things go wrong later on. Can I put both in different crates and have them both in my room just different parts of my room and should I cover the crates so they don’t see each other? Do I stop feeding them together? I have them getting used to being in the house freely and they play just fine and they stop and lay down when they are tired. So now do I separate when I have them in house freely? Also they are very dependent on me so when I walk away from them they look for me or I leave them in there crate they bark until stay in the room with them.

    Thank you so much for this video. I'm a single guy, who lives out in the rainforest of Hawaii. I had brother and sister black lab mixes literally just show up at my cabin about a month and a half ago at the age of app. 8 weeks. I felt chosen. I have a lanai so they've been spending all their time out there. They are not in vaccinated completely yet so they have been home with me for the most part when I'm home. They cry incessantly when I leave and if I try to take one for a walk without the other the other cries. I am struggling to find the capability of an opportunity to train them one-on-one without the other being in earshot. They have been doing relatively well, but this is my first time really training dogs and I'm very overwhelmed. They wrestle all the time and the female is quite dominant over the male. I get extremely frustrated and have to walk away most of the time because I get angry. They only listen to commands sometimes and I'm feeling a failure as a puppy father who was picked out to care for them. I don't want to give either up- I want to give this all I have. Any suggestions? Thank you so much for your time! 🐾❤️🤙

    We are currently dealing with worst case :( my flatmate rescued two pups and randomly brought them home. We had joint care of them. She just left one day 6 months ago and never came back, leaving the dogs with us. One has extreme aggression issues and the other is the complete opposite. So eventually someone told me about Littermate Syndrome. We have worked extremely hard with them but it is getting worse and worse so now we are needing to rehome one of them to give her a better life with someone who has experience and can train her better. We did EVERYTHING wrong without even realizing it :( I so wish more people knew about this. I'm absolutely heartbroken about it

      This is my current situation. I recently adopted 2 male pups from the same litter because I had no idea about this. I thought it'd be best for the dogs as far as their transition and building a relationship with us (I have a husband amd 3 children). Well, lets just say that they fight NONSTOP and training is so difficult. I have no idea if this will get better since we're still early on (they just turned 9 weeks yesterday). But this terrifies me, and it probably explains why I can't get them to stop fighting no matter how hard I try

    When I was younger my parents adopted 2 Rottweiler mix puppies from the same litter. They had some aspects of this and some not. They had training and they did good in that regard. They shared a crate when they were puppies which eventually led to them being unable to be in separate crates they had to be in a huge one together. Sometimes if they were playing outside one would get shut outside by accident and they would have major separation issues. The female unfortunately had a lot of health issues, she had anxiety, and auto immune issue attacking her eyes, and she would lick everything and everyone constantly. She’d line her kibble up on the floor to eat. My parents often said they sadly hoped she would pass first because she wouldn’t be able to handle losing her brother. She eventually had to be put down, and her brother was never the same after he was clearly massively depressed he even started to line up his food like she used to... he a few months later got cancer in his shoulder and the vet recommended he be put down as well. My parents lost both of their dogs within 3 months the emotion of that made them not want a pet for a long time, though they have eventually gotten a Pomeranian and a lizard lol. That’s the other unfortunate thing about having dogs from same litter they eventually may pass pretty close together and that can be very sad 😞 I miss them still, 10 years later 💔

    im sorta in a similar situation - parents bought 2 pom pups from the same litter, (both 8 weeks old), one male, one female. The breeder advised us not to bring them outside or socialise them until they’re fully vaccinated which is sometime in the next two months.
    its only been like 5 days since they were adopted lol, but im tryna work with my family to divide the load - so far im going to try keeping them in separate crates and giving them separate eating and potty times, a lot of the stuff ive seen online gives me a bit of doubt about being able to maintain the both of them but yours is an inspiration! im pretty tired bc of them so far but at one point i hope that they might be close enough to being as well behaved as your little guys!

In our case though, although they probably were littermates (we don't know if they were blood brothers), they were 6 months old and already were separated when we got them. Traveler's Garden I have had many cats and kitten littermates and they tend to be much more independant than dogs do and dont seem to have the same type of bond either. Also if you watched the video she also stated that they do not always have to bond in such a manner to get littermate syndrom. I can only speak of my experiences (in dogs), and even though it seems very cute, it does have many down sides.

We are starting to crate them separately at the moment, but is kinda hard to keep them separated inside the house since they are still not fully potty trained. The funny thing is that the one that is the small kind puppy is the one that starts the chasings and bothers her sister a lot and then starts crying when the biting becomes more serious. Is weird cause they are learning good bitting force control with humans.

    What are your thoughts on an 11 month old dog, trained quite well, meeting another pup that’s 8 weeks old and coming home to us soon? Are those ages still close enough?

    We got our zoey at 10 weeks old and have been training her and she’s been doing well but I saw that her sister Nova from the same litter was still available so I got her at 5 months old. They are both obviously 5 months old but Nova has only been crate trained not potty trained and the two despite being the same age are completely different weight and personality. How should I train them? When they play they won’t stop chasing/play fighting until I separate them. How do I get them to relax when I just want them to chill out? Help please

    how large of an age gap would you say IS appropriate to prevent litter-mate syndrome for efficiently? this video was very helpful in my decision to not take on 2 puppies at once in the same age range. i was thinking maybe getting one pup at 8 weeks then when that pup is about 6 months and fully vaccinated, get another at 8 weeks.

    Hi. We are bringing home brother/sister pups (8wks). They are coming with a flight nanny in the same crate. Being that they’ve been together all of their short lives, is there a time frame to slowly separate them or do you suggest separating them right away?

    I have two long hair Chihuahua mix males from the same litter. Yes, they do fight! They are fighting over me and dominance. I never thought of the Alfa situation when I rescued them! Some days are worse then others. They’re shelter dogs! Extremely loving but never socialized! Terrified of other people particularly men! Thankfully I’m retired!! I have had them nearly a year. Lots of work but I took them on and would never separate them now! They sleep with their heads on each other and on me.

    Thank you so much for this video. I just got two puppies from the same. . They are from separate litters One is almost 3 weeks older then the other. Both boys. I’m very anxious to train them correctly I hsve crated them separately but the crates are right next to each other. My husband and I play with each dog separately and then together. When they play together they start biting each other and get crazy. I then separate. I pick them up and put them on their back and rub their belly to calm them down. How much play should they have with each other and what can I do to encourage healthy play.

    Adopted our puppies (4 month old pom sisters). The rescue had them sleeping in the same crate and eating together. When I inquired about separate crates and walks, she told me that it wasn't necessary. Everything I read said to start giving them individual attention asap. The first night, I felt AWFUL because they were crying like crazy in separate crates even though they were RIGHT NEXT to each other. Thankfully, after awhile, one fell asleep. Of the 2, this one seems okay on her own. The other is more restless and anxious. I hope it gets better with time. The rescue said they are both warm, but from what we've witnessed that is only true for 1/2. It could just be the 2nd one needs time to come out of her shell?
    Some things I've noticed just from day 1.
    -Walks: So far they seem okay with separate walks.
    -Bath time: The independent pup did just fine. My other pup was anxious without her sister, but she gave me NO trouble during her bath.
    Play time: They mostly compete over one toy even though there are two toys in the pen. I watch them closely and correct them if they get too rough. I have read to limit their play time too, which is something I'm figuring out. What is a good enough amount for them to have play time together? A half hour-1 hour a day?
    -2nd pup: She is definitely a barker. I took her out of her crate at one point during the night to play with her, hoping to make her sleepy. We played with the ball and she let me pet her and everything. I felt that we bonded and I started training her to give paw and sit, which she caught on fast. For the first time, she didn't seem to care about puppy #1. I'm hoping that is a positive sign? Now, I'm working on them eating separately. The rescue had them sharing one bowl for both food/water!

    We have 3 puppies from the same litter and these little guys love each other. They are now over a year old. They always practice/play fight but if it should get to rough, and one yelps, they back off. Sometimes they get jealous of my time, so the one being held will growl at the others if they get too close but I shut that down quickly. The hardest part for me is that they are not understanding potty training. Once I get that completed I will be a much happier puppy parent.

I think it could be this syndrome but I’m not sure if it works for cousins or just the same litter... we tried training them but as you said it is pretty much impossible... could they have this syndrome or are they just aggressive??

    • @snowa5558
      @snowa5558 6 лет назад +1

      They could have the syndrome, as she explained in the video it can happen with two puppies that are not related but are the same age. Don't give up on their training though! like she said in the video, i'd suggest lots of one on one time, take them out individually and work on their training and bonding with them.

    Any info in the non-vaccation or titter test and less vaccination group? I'm preparing for my next service dog prospect in about a year. It's possible that will be a puppy and a service dog handler I talk to, her service dog died from, what she says, is a vaccination and the new service dog in training that she has had zero vaccinations. She says puppy boosters is the worst thing you can do to a dog. I've researched this, a lot. And there are compelling evidence from both sides. Evidence thay shows with a titter test that a dog may not need anymore rabies vaccinations for the remainder of it's life. I do believe we over vaccinate animals and my current service dog in training has only had rabies vaccinations over the last 4 yrs. His vet also said he did not need any others. Any thoughts about no or little vaccinations?

    Okay so I have a brother and sister from the same litter and they are almost two years old august 25th. And they are mini Australian Shepard dogs. I adore them but I need to know how I can train them. They stay in a huge pen together and when we travel they have a big kennel cage that they ride in together. They have never been separated except for three days while one had a foot surgery. So I saw your video and it sounds like I’m just out of luck if I think I’m going to train them . So I need help to know what to do or where I can get the help I need so that I can have trained dogs and not have to get rid of one . Please I need advice or resources to go to to get the help. Thank you

      If they have littermate syndrome at 2 years, the best option is probably going to be to separate them permanently. They have lived with you as one dog this whole time.

    Hi! I could really use some advice. I got 2 Husky puppies, and we could tell 2 weeks after bringing them home that they had littermate syndrome. Now, we've been pretty good about keeping them separated (we try to keep 1 outside while we play and lay with 1 inside), but at night I crate them separately but both of them are in my bed room with me. Should I keep them 100% away from each other (ie not even see each other AT ALL)? Or should I occasionally let them play with each other? Also, how will I know when they are bonded to us and no longer to each other? They seem to be doing much better not being around each other, but when left alone they certainly make a scene. They also still play a little rough, although not as rough as when we first got them. All the advice will be GREATLY appreciated!

      dang man.... im debaiting weather to keep both of my litter mates, Bruno and Lucy. I'm putting in as much time as you are saying, but I cant tell they love each other's play time, perhaps more than my company. I can't wrestle with them like they do with each other and all the things a dog can do. They are 3.5 months. Got them when they were 2 months old. My dilema is, is the time I am putting into them going to be worth it in the end? Because if they see poorly then I rather give up one of them. thoughts?

    • @poketvenus
      @poketvenus 4 года назад +1

      I'd definitely put their crates in different rooms, and I'd limit their "play" time to 15 minutes. The biddest thing is getting in at least two walks and two training sessions in, along with some play time. Worn out dogs are happy dogs, and when they associate exercise, training, and play related happiness with you and not their littermate? You have a bond.
