In my opinion, cream is only a symbol. Something like panaceum. This animation shows us how revolutional ideas or problem-solving mechanisms are destroyed by rich people who don't want changes cause "their" world is "perfect". It happened many times in history and will happen many times in the future.
WOW. That was absolutely brilliant. I don't think Ive even seen something that so perfectly plays with the expectations of the audience while the artist plays on his own popularity in the meta. He knows what you expect from him, and manipulates the hell out of it. There are at least 6 of 7 times were he is definitely daring you to make up the obviously grotesque Sci-Fi scenario you expect. "Of coarse it's just going to melt everyone's faces off, and the scientist was evil all along, it has to right?" you think to your self. And totally undercuts it every single time. Leading to a conflict that is better and says way more than all the evil science and body horror imagery in the world could. It also probably says something about the way we've come to expect conflict to happen in stories in general. Why does the cream seem so creepy at first? Because it does. Why? Because good genuine things aren't supposed to happen in stories. At least not until the end. In that way I can see why it ends the way it does. Even the viewer is complicit in the paranoia.
very good video man, i love when your analysis touches points referring to the media that you are presenting, i definitely would love that this video was any longer jajaja
Firth is such a genius. Exactly what goes on inside is fantastical mind will always be a mystery. He has a really unique way of looking at and representing the world around him. I would give my pancreas to think like David Firth for just a day. A really nice analysis. Good job.
Step one to thinking like David Firth, stop "analysing" film everybody and just feel its subtext as it plays out. He provokes imagination to see through the lies and misguidance, or the mundane, in your everyday life.
I love that you covered this because in my opinion its firths best work yet not only in animation quality but in writing. it deserves the recognition you provide.
Old video I know, don't spend much time on this platform. But your insight into a topic that is much relevant from than to today makes sense. Felt and experienced/ing much the same.
David Firth's work has always been a little too dark and bizarre for me to actually enjoy, but I will admit that it's very original, creative, and surprisingly poignant. I will definitely give Cream a watch though. Kinda glad to hear Firth is still creating stuff.
You, you you. I like you. I love your in depth analysis. I like how you also support David Firth and his genius. You deserve more subs than you actually do. As a long time David Firth fan, I'll subscribe to you.
Ever thought about doing an analysis video on Salad Fingers? I think it has a deep meta narrative and is rife with symbolism, and yet not too many videos about it. Most are just quick summaries about what happens plotwise and don't explore the underlying themes of it all. And one video that didn't bring anything new that was just disappointing. I'd love to see your take on it, and what you think of the series as a whole. Great content btw, keep up the good work!
I can always rely on you to make companion videos for everything i like :D. Some thoughts on cream: first of all i was shocked at the direction 'cream' took. I thought it was going in the direction of questioning whether we as a species can accept a reality without flaws, but instead he very specifically decided to make what felt like a political statement about inequality and how people who want to wield power require for power to be elitist, rich people need poor people to ba bale to call them selves rich etc. Thoughts regarding the Cream itself. Considering the cream doesn't improve itself...it could be considered that the cream itself must be perfect...and therefore everything cream is applied to is basically just improving itself until it becomes cream ...lol but this only works if the application process is required to engage the creams properties. If not.... then it could be said that the cream is in fact a placebo, my reasoning is that if the creams improvement properties are always in effect then the fact that the container does not improve suggests that either , cream works but that everything in the universe is already perfect ...or cream doesn't work...lol To much time on my hands. Thanks again great video :)
+Martin Grech Yep, totally. The corporate elites are fine with a public nullified by complacency, which is precisely what cream enabled in its initial form. They only act when the underlying power dynamics of the situation are threatened.
Cream is becoming a more perfect cream but that does not mean that it makes sense for it to turn everything into cream.Cream does what the person that applies it wants it to do and improves the person into a better person, changing a person from a person to cream does not make them a better person as to be a better person you must be a person and not cream. That is why it won't turn a tv into a person or cream, cause for a tv to be a better tv it must still be tv. Lets say you go to a cheap restaurant and you ask for soup, and you see a fly in your soup. So you leave the restaurant and go to a more costly place so you can have a better soup. You won't suddenly order a sandwich cause a sandwich is not a better (or even worse) soup, you will order a higher quality soup. If you still do not like it you may even find a place with an even higher quality soup. But you will never order a sandwich no matter how high quality the restaurant will get.
Well my ideas on cream , are far from gospel, the given rules around the function of 'cream' are not exactly air tight. In cream the creator states that "cream detects the most likely problem and attempts to solve it by correcting the molecular structure" then cream is shown to be able to fix even abstract problems such as poverty, or mental illness etc. It is then further shown that given prolonged exposure to cream, it will continue to exponentially improve whatever it is applied to, completely evolving it into new forms. It is also said that cream improves itself, however creams form never changes. suggesting that at least in terms of form ... cream is perfect. Humans and everything else however seem to respond to prolonged cream exposure by both having situational mental and physical form changes. suggesting that human physical form is not perfect. If cream always works toward creating perfect..in the way implied...it will work toward turning everything into its perfect unshifting self, at the very least physically. Its not a perfect theory. But do you really think its not at least a valid one?
Nope, for humanity the perfect form does means they stay "human". Even in the energy state they were still human, just in a form in which they did not have to be limited by their body. Just like black and white tv "upgrading" to color tv would change it's body but stay a tv. Cream is perfect at being cream. A human (according to the "Cream by David Firth" is perfect when they take the form of energy). The jar that holds the cream is already perfect in the ability to hold cream. Their is nothing that can be changed to make it any better at holding cream that why we do not see it changed.
Hmmm...actually i am starting to see your point, Your way of looking at it makes sense of the Cream container which defiantly is the 'Fly in the ointment' ;) of my theory. Fair enough i see that my analysis is at fault :) thanks for putting me right.
Fantastic analysis. Think you were spot on in your take. I have just one question regarding "Cream" itself. I pretty much put 2 and 2 together on what every character/scene represents, but I can't quite understand what the man who sprays his daughter with cream when she's feeling ill is doing. Not the spraying itself, but the human/computer cyborg on the table attached to the laptop. What could this represent?
i think that DF subscribed to you and then in return, i got you in my recommended. probably more people aswell. channel on 3k? growing? we will have to see :)
Has anyone ever heard of the technology where you can put a small piece of metal on your skin with a piece of tape connected to a wire and that would stream audio signals directly into your brain? It can be used to stream music television or even be connected to hearing aid for people that are completely def. No surgery, just adhear it to your skin with a little glue or piece of tape. Funny thing is, it's not available anywhere. There's a complete blackout of this. Even though it would solve so many problems and change the audio industry forever.
Or, perhaps the transmission that was invented that would reduce gas mileage per gallon exponentially. Have we ever seen any version of that? No, GM bought it and shelved it forever.
Ever read House of Leaves? I'm reading it right now and it reminds me a lot of This house has people in it and some of the other stuff on this channel.
Salad fingers... Ah, the memories. To be fair, the gratuitous violence in the early years was necessary imo. I believe the subtlety in his series' developed over time because there was none in the beginning
It seems to be more of an allegory of what would happen in the world if we do suddenly solve all war financial crisis and all other problems. How many inventions have existed in the past that have been shelved or destroyed? Technology in cars, energy, and the medical industry for example. All of these things would cost companies hundreds of billions of dollars. So every form of technology that can transform the economy in a way that puts major companies out of business is removed from this world. Either bought out and shelved or people are taken out.
It basically just shows that greed will stop a good thing however a good thing can be a bad thing at the same time life needs a level of struggle in order to truly appreciate success
man, before i saw this vid right here, i didn't understood what the businessmans are standing for. all just saying "no". now i feel stupid that i didn't realized earlier. thanks Nightmare Masterclass.
thank you, and keep the great work [edit] I've been through all of your songs, and liked the style a lot, but i couldn't find the song i wanted, that plays at 1:50, could you please give the name or help to find it? thanks a lot!
I wasn't saying I was the smartest person in the world either. Also just take one look at the world, you can't deny that really really stupid people exist. Just take Islamic terrorism for example.
You left out two important factors that you didn't discuss. 1. You mention the blend of horror and satire, but also you did not mention the dark comedy of the piece. That's an important thing to note as well. It's actually funny in places. Not as big a point as my second one, but something to bring up nonetheless. And 2. More importantly, "Cream" is also a take-that to the pharmaceutical industry. It's long been theorized that we have long held the power as a society to cure cancer and diabetes, but there is a lot of actual evidence to suggest that cures for them are intentionally withheld and research on them is intentionally limited and controlled by the corporations in charge of self-regulation of chronic illnesses. Because the "temporary day to day" treatments of Cancer and Diabetes are both multi-billion dollar side-businesses when it comes to the chronic medical treatment and many supplies needed to keep diabetics regulating their own condition with the things they need to buy to control it, and to keep cancer patients alive but spending money until they die from it. The "Cream" short is deliberately tackling issues of the people that make their fortunes by prolonging the suffering of others as "socially necessary" to keep them that way, as well as the things you've said about fear of technological singularity.
I agree that those in power will use their influence to maintain the status quo, generally, but i think net neutrality is the opposite issue. The way the internet works now is pretty much how it's always worked, which gives all websites equal access to consumers, and doesn't allow big companies to increase access to their websites, or slow down competitors. The ISPs wanted to repeal NN for the stated reason of "innovation", which I think is bogus, but won't go into it further. A better example would have been the still very real efforts to discredit and defund green energy options to maintain the status quo of fossil fuels.
I often feel pretty outside of leftist orthodoxy because of my transhumanism ideals. I'm glad that I'm not alone in my skepticism of the motivation of those (especially in power) who express technophobic or death cultist views.
The animation is very good and there is no doubt the man is talented. That being said, I didn't like the short. The plot holes really annoyed me. Also, the audio was like nails on a chalk board for me.
Nightmare Masterclass Everyone used cream to make themselves smarter. How did they fall for propaganda? Everyone was now infinitely wealthy. How could 1%, which shouldn't exist anymore, control anything? Cream can duplicate itself. There's no way the government could stop it. The cringey sound was significantly worse.
+Hey, we'll bang ok? I never thought I would say this to someone, but you're over thinking this in the worst possible way. m.imgur.com/gallery/9nohQh4 Over thinking things is my job. Please leave it to the pros.
banana derpington And the Worst Horror is Humans embracing their Flawed Nature, even though our Flawed Nature is our Worst Enemy and the Root of all Suffering and Evil. Only Science and Technology can save us from our Flawed Nature.
that is why we need communism, capitalism promotes the rich and big businesses, so they can restrict our views on newer technological advancements, however, before you start blasting me with "the ussr killed 90 trillion people so communism is evil" or "communism is a shit ideology because of its failure in every country", thats because those countries are using strict systems (i don't even like the ussr or the peoples republic of china), including that capitalism, if you have enough money, can increase your pay, while communism doesn't, but the increasing pay is what creates big businesses and the rich, so the less richer public believe everything that they say, because they want to be rich, either by following their footsteps as an example, and the process will continue, because the rich and big businesses spent a lot of time and effort into getting to the place that they are now, and they don't want that to change no matter what, they don't want to be equal (which is another thing communism promotes, equality) with the public, they want to be rich and powerful
I have an answer to every problem presented by this brilliant animation: Leftism. Without monetary incentive for the higher class, the workers can democratically decide on what they want to produce. And capitalist media is beholden to the higher class, so you can predict that "cream" would be given the praise it deserves. Besides, most capitalists inherit their money and power while using cheap labor and unjustified hierarchy. Sorry can't help it when I see liberalism addressing problems without addressing the root cause.
Yeah, I got that idea too. Especially how the higher class was censoring and imprisoning those who went against the status quo. Reminds me of US imperialism and toppled socialist countries in South America and Southeast Asia.
Ah yes but the problem is it will run out unlike cream which is self duplicating. Money cant appear put of thin air. And the fact of the matter is that employees are treated much better than back in the 1800s
@@smingjr Well, technically money does appear "out of thin air", which is why inflation is a thing. Physically nothing really appears or disappears, making every physical resource renewable (except energy but our universe is still young so there's plenty of hydrogen that we can harvest), but money is ultimately virtual. Not that it has no value, but value is always subjective.
Honestly I just found the video mostly pretentious. But I think you make good points that honestly kinda made me see it in a different light. I'm so sick and tired of the "evil businessman" stereotype these days I guess I just ignored any point the short had. Good video as per usual fam.
+Equestrian Republican Firth plays around with a number of tropes in Cream; e.g. the mad scientist, the evil businessman, the vapid public. He uses exaggerated versions of these things to make a point about how none of them are really viable when taken to a certain extreme.
It isn't so much "evil businessmen" as it is the politically, economically, and socially powerful looking out for their best interests at the expense of everyone else's. Something that is depressingly close to reality.
You are really trying to capture he's audience by explaining to the "casuals" the real meaning, but you shouldnt, let he's audience figure it out, you might be a fan, but please stop, let people get their own opinion, stop trying eto misleading them. you try but you get nowhere, cream is about whatever you understand about it, just like any other work by david firth, please stop.
In my opinion, cream is only a symbol. Something like panaceum. This animation shows us how revolutional ideas or problem-solving mechanisms are destroyed by rich people who don't want changes cause "their" world is "perfect". +Billocks I like how you told everyone to stop analysing his work, and then proceeded to...analyze his work. Lol wut
The point of the short is that people are awful and even perfection is eventually destroyed
Love the video and your analysis, thanks for putting in all the work for this!

I think a lot of his stuff is just raw and he probably doesn’t analyse it as much as you are although that’s just my opinion.
I often feel pretty outside of leftist orthodoxy because of my transhumanism ideals. I'm glad that I'm not alone in my skepticism of the motivation of those (especially in power) who express technophobic or death cultist views.
Reminds me a bit of Ubik by Philip K. Dick. David Firth is a legend though.
I love it!
i thought this was real failed experiments or something
liked, subbed, & shared shared shared.
cream is awesome (the video).
10 seconds wasn't enough time, couldn't find the video let alone watch it before you ruined it with spoilers
David firth is British.
I make cream
Is this real?

niceeeeee
ayy, a theory! thanks
The animation is very good and there is no doubt the man is talented. That being said, I didn't like the short. The plot holes really annoyed me. Also, the audio was like nails on a chalk board for me.
+Hey, we'll bang ok? What plot holes?
Nightmare Masterclass Everyone used cream to make themselves smarter. How did they fall for propaganda?
Everyone was now infinitely wealthy. How could 1%, which shouldn't exist anymore, control anything?
Cream can duplicate itself. There's no way the government could stop it.
The cringey sound was significantly worse.
+Hey, we'll bang ok? I never thought I would say this to someone, but you're over thinking this in the worst possible way.

Over thinking things is my job. Please leave it to the pros.
+Hey, we'll bang ok? C'mon, man. That was a joke.
I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. FYI, I'm at work atm. Imgur is blocked. So I don't know what that link is.
OK I really like your video you're a very smart person but one suggestion is that you become more enthusiastic pleass
+brandon zamora I'll keep this in mind! Thanks for the feedback.
but cream isnt horror, stop calling it horror
+Plastic No.
The suppression of science is the ultimate horror
banana derpington And the Worst Horror is Humans embracing their Flawed Nature, even though our Flawed Nature is our Worst Enemy and the Root of all Suffering and Evil. Only Science and Technology can save us from our Flawed Nature.
Plastic This is pure horror, not your cheap paranormal activity jumpscare "horror" smh.
Oh, but it is. Something this dark falling so close to our reality is definitely a horror.
that is why we need communism, capitalism promotes the rich and big businesses, so they can restrict our views on newer technological advancements, however, before you start blasting me with "the ussr killed 90 trillion people so communism is evil" or "communism is a shit ideology because of its failure in every country", thats because those countries are using strict systems (i don't even like the ussr or the peoples republic of china), including that capitalism, if you have enough money, can increase your pay, while communism doesn't, but the increasing pay is what creates big businesses and the rich, so the less richer public believe everything that they say, because they want to be rich, either by following their footsteps as an example, and the process will continue, because the rich and big businesses spent a lot of time and effort into getting to the place that they are now, and they don't want that to change no matter what, they don't want to be equal (which is another thing communism promotes, equality) with the public, they want to be rich and powerful
Technology is evil!
Jon Starace I kinda felt like the video might have been about leftism rather than just technology
@@smingjr
Well, technically money does appear "out of thin air", which is why inflation is a thing.
I think we fundamentally agree, but I doubt the person you're responding to will be very receptive to this approach.
You need Jesus
You are really trying to capture he's audience by explaining to the "casuals" the real meaning, but you shouldnt, let he's audience figure it out, you might be a fan, but please stop, let people get their own opinion, stop trying eto misleading them. you try but you get nowhere, cream is about whatever you understand about it, just like any other work by david firth, please stop.
+TheOffensiveIdiot This is the longest run-on sentence I've ever seen.
I am drunk right now, you've seen nothing yet, if this somehow impress you, get me an achviement .
+TheOffensiveIdiot Drink some water before you pass out. It'll help with the hangover.
