I’m here because you don’t do the dog and pony show. You just talk about music, synths and yourself. It’s refreshing. Thank you
Wow thanks man. That means a lot! its very encouraging to hear when someone says something like this. Especially when I like to keep it light and have a laugh. Cheers!
I thought you hit many nails on the head there, so I've subbed. I promised myself I would start my youtube channel in 2020, bought the gear to vlog then thought that it would just lead me down the road of spending time on working on youtube rather than music. And it's relentless, to regularly post 'content' to maintain an audience. My energy levels have declined with ill health. After covid I'd rather go sighseeing with the wife for as long as I can, take my camera and make a soundtrack, no pressure just more selfish fun than flogging someone's VPN, electronics, or a. n. other content provider on YT. You're making sense to me.
Nice intro song. Maven Fiction rides again.
Haha thanks man. That’s actually the focal point of episode two that I’m working on now.
The mind set change you describe is real. As a film maker the art has gone out of it due to having to chase the dollars. The entire system is rigged against indies and I am fairly successful at it within the niche I work in. Yet, Amazon takes 50% of my sales price off the top because I am not a major studio.
With film I just want to get back to making my art without regard for whether or not anyone even see's it. Yet, it is an expensive business, the way it works is you have to take out loans to make your art and then you are enslaved to the Cash Flow Beast.
I have kept my music side as a hobby. It means I can make synth pop tunes, or grinding noise tracks, if I want. I am interested in exploring all kinds of music and not selling anything is absolute freedom to do anything I want.
Besides, my gear is shite as I can't afford the nice stuff. No one wants to hear my latest dark ambient banger on a 200 dollar used synth. :D
As far as the actual career side, I have some films I want to make before I leave this existence. Chasing YT popularity won't get me closer to doing that in any way. Even the film festival route is a lie these days. Most film festivals cash your check and send you on your way.
I think it is important to understand the reality of how trying to be a pro will impact your art.
Thanks for this comment. You’ll have to point me in the direction of your film work! Where are you based?
I know where to come know for filming advice!
The thing is, there will be people who want to hear it. But finding that audience is the hard bit!
You’re the Karl Pilkington of synths 😂 And I’m here for that 🤪🙌🤟
That a back handed compliment some how. But this might give me an idea for my own YT channel.🤔
I actually don’t mind that haha. I have fallen deeper into almost a caricature of myself on here.
Tele more indie? More country rock :)
The hardest thing for me to remember and feel good about is to do the voodoo I want to do that makes me happy and be ok if people hate it and flattered if they love it. There are only so many people that “make it” as a RUclips content creators. That leaves the vast majority of us sharing because we’re passionate about sharing the things we’re passionate about. Keep being real and we’ll keep watching.
Yes. More videos Aaron. Love your sense of humour / outlook.
Cheers Bevan!
0:29 MAVEN FICTION RIDES AGAIN
😂 that’s the second one I’ve had. I’m going to make this into a full theme tune for the next episode!
The build your channel until companies send you "free" product then do mostly reviews pipeline seems pretty real. I swear I've seen those videos where the person has just been sent their first "free" module and they're a bit excited (good for them!). It is a huge part of synth RUclips and the marketing machine but it isn't the content that I'm here for. Give me in depth videos on more general patching philosophies and techniques! This is also what I try to make with my collaborator Bernie Durnheim.
Good points throughout. I have thought a lot on musician/content creator divide. I also think smaller synth channels would be well served to do more collaborations and cross-overs. I think we might pay more attention to each other, listening and referencing one another. However things improve, you do great work. Keep it up!
Thanks mate. I’d love to talk more on your thoughts on it. Maybe we start the trend with a collab? Message me on instagram or email me my friend.

I’m pretty sure I patented that lasso dance floor move in the 90s at Leed’s love train 70s night. You will be hearing from my lawyers with a take down demand.
There’s only one way to settle this… dance off!
@@Mavenfiction just off to tell the missus that I have to fly back to the UK tomorrow on mi todd to accept a dance off challenge.

Liking these videos that deal with the process, super interesting. Keep up the good work homie
Thanks C. This is Ep1 of this new format. I’m hoping it makes it easier to get more videos up, whilst still retaining the core content! Really appreciate the comment!
Hey aaron - Interesting 😊 Much to think about. They say (and we all know who 'they' are) the most successful channels are the ones that concentrate on only one thing. So for a synth channel, mixing education with music is, perhaps, not ideal although many people are (relatively) successfu at it. Some YTers create 2 channels - one for their education and one for their music. I'm at a perpetual crossroads because I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up... 😱😢
Haha hi Ian. Laughing at your closing statement. Two channels sounds like twice the work and I worry it’ll be a step even further from making music.
@@Mavenfiction Yeah, probably. You could always ditch the education stuff... 😊
Aaron your cheeky northern accent and your wonderful philosophy is why we like your videos. And ofcourse you beautiful face. But I would love to listen to more tunes by yourself. And if you do new things. Some will work and some will not. But your core of 3.5 thousand subscribers is definitely a good thing. I think it's a snowball effect the bigger it gets the more it builds. Damian keys is great. And really as someone who wants to get my music out there AND start my own RUclips channel. Your trials and tribulations are an education. Don't be afraid to start something new. And if you feel stuck in the mud don't be afraid to give 5them what they want. By the sounds of things you are having a deep think about where you want to take this. And that is fantastic Aaron you are the only YT person I have subscribed and given to on patrion. I do that because I think your content is great and more real than most of the big guns like Andrew Whag (I hope I spelled that right). They get GIVEN products every day. And I don't trust their objectivity. With notable exceptions like Divkid or Loopop.
So something more philosophical is definitely a good angle. And like I said you can still put your music out there.
Last thing before I start to ramble is this. I was surprised that Underbelly (you suck at producing) only released his first album I think last year. He has been making content for years before he did that. When I finally decide to start my online Journey I will have at least two albums worth of music to put out there. My biggest fear is I make crap music. But I have had people say it's good. And if it were me I would tell someone if I don't like their music. So that at least gives me some confidence.
It’s Andrew Huang Rod. But you’re right- he doesn’t have to buy much gear…
@@walrtbstudios5430 sorry my dyslexia is pretty bad... let's put it this way Wal, my spell checker dose the heavy lifting. If I had to rely on my own I would have to remember how to spell every word.. even my spell checker gives up on me sometimes. And the spelling Gestapo are always on my case.😁
Thanks Wal. Your system is looking great BTW. And I still want a SBG. Electric is probably better. But if you want to sell me one I will be interested. For a good price.😇
Thanks Rod. Always appreciate you putting some real thought into these comments and carrying on the conversation.
Send me over some music to hear! I’m sure it’s great.
I don’t really like that I’m even indirectly promoting brands for free. I mean I appreciate these clever people making awesome things to use. But I’ve shown that when they take my money for the pleasure. Haha.
@@Mavenfiction don't let the idea of capitalism get in your way. We all need to make a buck. But also don't let the machine take control. That's easy for me to say, I know. But you are doing a great job. The algorithm is something you should not worry too much about.
I'm thinking of just doing a royalty free thing with my music. So I will definitely send you some... but I don't know how. Because I'm a complete luddite.🤣 but definitely I will try. I will see if I can do it through patrion. If not I think I'm just a couple of months away from my own YT channel so I will send you a link.👍
@@rodnee2340 thanks mate. Yeah message me on there and we can sort it. I’m gutted. The thumbnail didn’t upload so I’ve probably missed out of loads of views on this video. Spent all that time on it too :(
Very cool video.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great video. Sounds like we have very similar experiences with the platform albeit your channel is bigger and you're a professional musician.
I have real trouble sometimes trying to figure out if its ok to just go live and improvise some music without a plan. I enjoy putting up live jams and really just sharing music but the engagement it gets is lower versus tutorials ive made.
Hope you're happy with your path - that is the best metric i reckon.
Thanks. I do think it’s fine to just go live and though the views could be dramatically lower, at least those watching are the right audience.
Its quite a conundrum being a YT musician. I think for the most part ppl come to the synth side of YT for reference, rather than finding new music. A couple of my dfam videos caught the algorithms eye, which was nice, but I dont want to make dfam vids til I die. So I lean more heavily on music being made on my channel, and tend to only do demos when I want to explore a module more closely. My music content does much worse and usually takes more time to create but its a more satisfying process for me. I do find it funny when I post a new song to YT I list some of the gear used in the title to help its promotion, which makes me want to do just that if I ever put my stuff on a more traditional music streaming service.
Thanks for the comment. I’ve noticed that Legowelt used the gear name in some of his releases lately and I wondered if that was a similar thing. He’s a prime example of a larger artist that I watch his studio tours and making of videos but wouldn’t go listen to.
I agree, the process takes so much longer. I’m determined to figure it out somehow. I worry that I just use RUclips and the need for consistent uploads as a way to procrastinate instead of making music.
@@Mavenfiction RUclips loves consistency. Ive recently picked up the Boredbrain xport for more output options on my setup, which has helped my productivity a lot. Now I dont have to redo a take because the mix isnt to my liking.
I think finding your workflow is one of the most important aspects of staying creative. Its hard enough trying to bring a piece of music into being. The birthing process has to be as streamlined as possible.
Thanks for your interesting talk and topic.
You already summed up the situation very well. I just want to point out that it really comes down to your expectations. Want to rise to rockstar fame with a viral synth music video? That's not going to happen because the niche of "synth nerds watching youtube" is very small indeed. Looking for a place to socialise with fellow musicians? That's perhaps more likely to happen. Working for RUclips is a two-way contract: They provide the infrastructure and the platform, and you provide the content and follow the rules / the trend. And it's not unlikely you'll find fun and fulfillment in that unexpected place you'll end up in. ;-)
You should put your music in the background on your talks.
I like your phone.
Haha thanks. It’s from my Nans house where I grew up. We recently had to sell the house sadly so I have it there to remind me of them.
Tried to reply twice and something is buggy and both long comments went into the ether it seems. At least I can't see them here. Oh well. Thanks for the video. I do a lot of internet marketing for my other projects, film and books. There are tricks to it. It is a huge game and very easy but time consuming to play. When I work my twitter account I can get 40-50 new followers in a day. I am very cynical about all this stuff.
I think it makes you cynical. I mean I have a fair sized instagram following and can’t even reach them organically. All that time spent growing that audience and I can’t even communicate with them!
well with some exceptions RUclips is just a big vehicle for advertisements. not only the RUclips ads but also the content itself is completely riddled with advertisements... and a lot of surreptitious advertising disguised as some "lifestyle" bs...
I can relate to this, because I’ve been very careful from the start not to attract the wrong kind of audience. I didn’t want to make the kind of videos that get you easy views, like reviews for example, because then it would mean I’d be stuck making that kind of content forever. Stuff needs to be searchable though, so it means you need to get creative to get views. I’ve always spun my own little thing on here, with my photography content as well as my more music or DIY related content. Frankly I stumbled into music RUclips by total accident. I’m actually a photographer by profession and somehow I’m in the weird position that my music related videos get far more reach! Hilariously I ended up on one of my favourite photography podcasts not because of my photography but because they played my music? 🤦♀ So now I’m thinking, sod it, I’mma just lean into it and focus on the music stuff for a while 😅 Personally my big inspirations for music RUclips are Look Mum No Computer and Hainbach. I’ve been watching them for years, long before I ever made any videos related to music. Now I look at my analytics and which two channels are the ones my audience watches? LMNC and Hainbach, so I think I’m on the right path at least. Both are really good at putting the music in the forefront and I really like that. It makes them feel far more genuine than the typical synth youtuber reviewer type channels. I like and watch those too, but they do become stuck with what they make. RUclips is such an exercise in squaring the circle. It kinda bullies people into doing what the algorithm wants even when that means they end up with an audience that doesn’t actually want to see the content they really want to make. It’s a trap, don’t run after the algorithm or it’ll end up just as awful as anything else you don’t really want to do. If you ever wanna chat about this stuff, let me know. Our channels seem to be at a similar size, maybe we can compare notes to avoid falling into that trap?
I really enjoy your show. Keep doing you.
Lol. like your intense style. And I think I have subscribed to you.
Thanks guys! :D
Thanks for the comment. You seem to bring in big views on less videos. I honestly admire that. It’s not an easy thing to do and isn’t something I’ve cracked. You’d bring more to the table than me in terms of sharing experiences. But I’m down for sure!
@@Mavenfiction ah, man, I just have a few vids that have taken off, really. It’s relatively easy to predict for me what gets a lot of attention. Girl doing tech stuff usually flies pretty well on YT, especially when it’s something people tend to find intimidating. And you’ve niched quite far down with the Eurorack stuff, so that has potentially more limited reach? Would be cool to hang and talk YT + music stuff. I always enjoy watching your vids 😀 I’m guessing email would be best?
... also let's be honest. I'm also here like 60% for comedy.
Thanks! That actually means a lot tbh because it shows I’m getting at least a little bit of my authentic personality in there.
@@Mavenfiction It definitely works, you're probably one of the funniest musician youtubers i follow. Some really good points in this video too, I have three videos i posted on my channel, 2 are music videos, 1 is "for the algorithms" and it's got triple the views the others have combined. I loath shorts and reels and all that mess with every fiber of my being and installed an add-on in my browser to block them from showing up. I've seen a lot of guys move into hocking-wares-style sponsored videos which i honestly just skip because i never know if they are leaving out critical info. I personally prefer the music, info, education stuff... but i do get it, how do you make money? it's a tough place the internet is in these days for sure
Content = Information
Art = Art
People know the difference. Corporations, labels, and all the rest of it don't.
Had these exact thoughts end of last year getting sucked into making "educational content" that wasn't helping grow as an artist. Just felt like trying to build two separate businesses. Took me 6 months but finally feel like I have some ways to blend everything together. All that to say its good to hear others going through the same thing and people are there for the personality.
It’s draining isn’t it haha. I’d love to hear how you’ve overcome it and rectified it!
Ps thanks mate
@@Mavenfiction basically totally ditch the "how to" and "tips and tricks" and just make music and show it all, fun, frustrations and everything. The tips and educational will probably subtly come up naturally anyways without making a dry video about one thing. Mainly focusing on having fun and finding new sounds and (hopefully) motivating people to make music without the stress of making the next chart topper. Also collabs with other artists would be sick and try to take some of the lonliness out of youtube. But just to be clear, this is the angle I'm going at it from this point on so who's to say if the audience will come for that haha
I love your content. But personally, I never watch anyones live streams at the time so that I can fast forward all the crap bits later. Like” can people hear me?” & “we will be starting soon”..etc…plus yes I am more of a passive subscriber and maybe I’m in the minority.
Haha yeah I get that but it’s conversing live that’s the advantage. Passive viewing is absolutely welcome :)
RUclips is broken. Not only YT but the internet in general is fucked. I bought stocks in popcorn
Haha yeah you’re totally right!
@@Mavenfiction
I’m just tired of being be sold bullshit. RUclips, as far as electronic music goes anyway, has become an infomercial site. Plus, it’s terrible for trying to hock music. It’s a video site. we’re pushing an audio format on an app that paywalls background listening.
An issue is, the music specific apps are even worse for utilising paid methods to both reach audiences and consume music from my experience. We shouldn’t have to lean so heavy on video to get organic reach and funnel people to music. It seems that’s what starts people on the path that leads them to just pedal gear.
@@Mavenfiction Yes, also that’s an issue too. Which leads to the MLM that is music distribution now. Yeah, anyone can buy a distrokid account and get on Spotify. Doesn’t do any good because it’ll never get heard and you’re basically wasting your money. Thankfully it’s not expensive but still.
Yeah, but music is completely incidental to YT, isn’t it? YT is for nutters who spend all their lives with a phone in their hands hoping some Karen is going to pop off at an ambulance worker and get them a million views. I put together a video of an electronic music piece and might get fifty. Even the big, respected names- Ben, Jeremy, Robert etc- get decent numbers, but they’ll never be in the same league as some who just happened to film a cat fall downstairs.
Music has always been at its best live. It’s just a lot harder with modular…
Tbh Wal I'm usually first to give you a like. I think you should get a small case and get on the circuit. People are mostly music indifferent. They like what is on the radio or the soundtrack of their video game. If you have 500 years of great music it is hard to shine. But if you play live people will notice. You need a gig case.
RUclips is a spectrum. Some use it for education, others entertainment. In my case, it started as a tool to create awareness of what I was doing. Where it’s ended up is a bit cloudy and I’m figuring that out.
