Thank you so much for posting this! To your last point, why would it be bad for the hospital if the GPO wants the manufacturer to sell as much a possible (especially if membership fees are not contingent on volume sold)? Is it because of the risk of too much inventory on hand?

Good post. I have a question, as I had a long conversation with a colleague about this today. I was explaining that HC GPOs DO NOT purchase and self-distribute anything. They are simply the negotiator for the group of facilities. While they are for profit, they do not mark up anything. They take a small % cut. He adamantly disagreed. He said healthcare GPOs do buy and sell (distribute) and even have their own private label commodity type products, which they (or their wholly owned distribution arm) distributes for a profit. In other words, they are acting just like any other wholesale distributor. I am 99% certain this is not correct. Can you help sort this out?

Thank you for your question. The answer is… it’s complicated, sort of a combination of things.
I found this article to be helpful: seekingalpha.com/article/4411967-premier-inc-undervalued-swan-on-surface-of-healthcare-industry

@@ahealthcarez thanks for that! Interesting, that I look at their sources of rev....(guidance for 2021) has admin fees (rev) at $580M and "Direct Sourcing of Products" rev of $690. They also, much like Vizient, have a private label "direct sourcing" arm Premier Pro S2S. I can't determine exactly how that operates, but it appears to be mostly commodity type products which may have been affected during the pandemic. I wonder, do they (Premier Pro) actually distribute....or is this just an agreement with mfr and distributors who distribute the Premier Pro line. To distribute themselves, they'd have to own and operate massive distribution centers. I just can't find anything that indicates that is the case. Thanks again!

Hi Dr. B, nice job teaching! You made it easy and entertaining for me to learn about GPOs. Quick question, I am student working on my master's scholarly project, and I am researching the market. More specifically, I am trying to determine different hospitals' GPO contract rates (e.g., breast localization). Where might I go to find this information? Thanks for your advice!

Not sure what you mean by GPO co tract rate for breast localization.
