    Hey brother, I'm a cabinet maker professionally. So I was just gonna point out a couple things. Use them if you like, it's your house. I just thought it might make it a little easier on you. On your lower cabinets the 1/4" back with the 3/4" plywood to fasten them to the wall is perfect. So nice work, however on your upper cabinets. All you need is a solid 1/2" plywood back, on those and then you can screw through the back into the 3/4" sides and shelves to attach the back. It's also much easier to install your drawer slides in the shop. Because you can lay the cabinets on there side while you install them. I'd recommend a solid 1/2" back on the pantry as well. Anyhow, I'm a long time viewer and love the channel! Just wanted to help make it easier if I could! Thanks for the content. Until next time, take it easy!!
    (I've built and installed lot of 15+ thousand dollar kitchen cabinet setups, so I'm not a keyboard know-it-all. Just trying to help.)

    Nice build. Kitchen designer here. TLDR: 3K for cabinets with this quality of construction is really good but it would be difficult for a novice or even beginner woodworker to pull off. Diamond Now is no longer sold at Lowe's (they moved to Project Source), but when it was they had white, grey, and a rustic hickory cabinet. They were also made of 1/2" particle board. Lowe's offers a Plywood cabinet with soft close doors and drawers that usually comes in in a couple of days (Reliabuilt) but only comes in white or espresso for color and shaker for style. That cost would be closer to 6,000-8,000 for a kitchen this size. Diamond Express is not available at all Lowes yet but has more colors and door styles and is an intermediate step between the cabinets in stock at the store and warehouse and the next step up. The next step up would be something semi-custom which could be as much as 10,000-30,000 for a kitchen this size depending on the customizations you want to make, the color, the door style, and brand you choose. TLDR: 3K for cabinets with this quality of construction is really good but it would be difficult for a novice or even beginner woodworker to pull off.

    For that corner cab, missed opportunity to have a swing out shelf system.
    Also you just build a double wide cab and blank off one side with the cab that butts into it.
    Also also euro frameless and adjustable height legs are the way to go now. Much faster for production and easier adjustment at install time.

    I watched the video thru to the end... and read a good majority of the comments.
    I have a couple comments...
    Its clear that you have some decent cabinetry skills... not pro skills.. but a lot better than your average backyard woodworker. You could save yourself a lot of headaches and on-the-fly re-working by planning ahead. Go online and get a copy of a cabinet layout program like Sketch Up or something... you enter your room dims with window/door openings, outlets, plumbing, etc... add in your appliances... and then start placing standard (or custom) size cabinets (base and uppers) to fill in the space. Its easy to add /subtract cabinets and then view the whole layout in 3D / 360⁰ to see if you like it. Once you're happy with your plan... save it and print out a 2D cut list.
    A large majority of the comments spoke to how you compared the cost between store bought and DIY. The comments regarding the different materials used are spot on... and reinforce your decision to DIY... but many people seem stuck only on the bottom line difference in cost. I think the most relevant factor when deciding store bought.. over DIY.. over custom order.. is the intended end use. For example... are these cabinets for your own home or a rental/flip property? Are you more concerned about total cost and expediency of completion... or are you more concerned with quality, durability, and actually getting the visual 'look' that YOU want?
    As for including the cost of tools.. yes.. fair enough.. that needs to be considered... but realistically... if you're considering doing a DIY kitchen cabinet build and don't already own a good majority of the tools you need... then you should seriously reconsider because building a set of kitchen cabinets isn't something your average joe can bang out in a weekend. It takes skill and experience... both of which come through time and repetition. Just a piece of advice to prospective DIY'ers out there... don't go buy a shop full of woodworking tools and think that makes you a skilled woodworker. All you did by buying a tool... was get that tool... you didn't buy the knowledge, or skill, to use it properly.
    I knew a guy several years ago who figured... hey... I've been a framer for over a decade... how hard can a set of cabinets be? He botched his cabinets so bad he literally scrapped the entire lot and ended up paying someone to build them for him. Paying someone to do something you thought was so stupidly easy is a hard pill to swallow... but then again... most people these days only compare bottom line costs and don't give a moments thought to the years of knowledge it takes to make something look "stupidly easy" to complete.... and even less thought to that knowledge having a price tag attached to it.

      From a professional remodeler/custom builder: always, before you rough in, take your time to block for all your finishes. Towel bar, hand towel, tissue dispenser, mirrors, shelves, tv mount, cabinets, etc… this will help you avoid headache. I use 2x8 or 2x10 lumber to do this. Measure to center from floor to center, mark that number on the block, and take a picture. Actually, take a picture of you mechanical in the wall before you close too. That way you’ll always know.

    • @disiswizkid
      @disiswizkid 11 дней назад

      @@Koitus36 This right here. I take photos of all my framing before insulation, room by room, wall by wall. Wherever needed, I also record stud layouts, such as the kitchen for laying out studs for cabinets. In that instance, instead of writing on the blocks, studs, or whatever, I have a helper pull my measuring tape from an inside/outside corner and I walk down the wall with him as he stretches it out, and I video the tape, reading the measurements "to" each stud. It makes it a simple task when later going to mark studs, critical pipes and electrical on the drywall. I set a screw or nail in a drywall corner to hook my tape on (or have a helper hold the end), set my phone down and hit play (with the volume up) while slowly stretching my tape out, and mark each item as I hear myself read out the measurements on the video. But yeah, getting all backing in where necessary and recording its location with your preferred method is an important step. ;)just

  • @TheSavageViking1
    @TheSavageViking1 6 месяцев назад +2

    Bruh you could solve your whole stud issue when hanging the upper carcasses by cleating them. Run a long 3/4” board mitered end up along the wall and secure that into the studs. Then add your matching cleats to the back of your carcasses. Easier to hang solo and you’re holding hella weight with that setup. Finishing boards hide the gap.

    The cabinets turned out great! The one thing you didn't factor in was your time to build them. Installation is a wash because it's going to be about the same either way. Even though it obviously takes a lot more time to build them versus buy them, there is a huge satisfaction in creating your own cabinets and you definitely have the ability to customize them much easier than store bought. Plus, the quality of materials is very likely higher with the built cabinets. I think in the end if you have the time and resources to build your own cabinets, it's always going to be better.

    For all of the people who said you need so many tools to build your owe cabinets, that's incorrect. Technically, everything could have been cut with a table saw. The casework, frames, drawers, drawers fronts, doors, etc. (The only exception being the hinge cups, but that can be worked around with using different hinges) As a cabinet maker, I would not have made these cabinets the way he did, but at the end of the day, we can all agree they are, in fact, cabinets.

    Silverware and serving stuff.

The only thing I would say for next time (if there is a next time) is to take some more time to think about cabinet layout (like you said). From what we can tell, there appears to be a lot of wasted space in the corners and next to the small cabinet of drawers. There are other options beside the lazy susan now. There are special pullout options for corner cabinets which probably would have been great in your situation. Great vid as usual!

    The biggest difference between buying vs building is the flexibility. You can build a kitchen exactly to your liking where as buying cabinets has its limitations on options. Not to mention stock availability. I’d definitely go build your own

      I think that it totally depends on what you want. If what you are looking for comes in a size that is standard, by going to surplus or overstock places as well as second hand stores you can have a lot to chose from, and the second hand stores sometimes have custom stuff that was removed from another location or something the buyer might have rejected due to a measurement error that could end up benefiting your design.

    I like watching this series and your measuring adventures. Wouldn’t it have been better to put down the flooring and finish the drywall first?

    • @Evan-zc5hv
      @Evan-zc5hv 6 месяцев назад +6

      Finishing, absolutely. Flooring I don’t know. On commercial job sites I’ve been on, typically flooring is one of the last things done.
      I also think he should’ve removed all drywall throughout the house

    As I’m watching this, I just thought at 17:38, since you haven’t mudedededed yet, take that piece of drywall off and add 2 more 2x4s so that right side of the cabinet can bite :) but wow at the end, turned out to be beautiful.

    Great work as usual, Alex. The color is absolutely stunning. One thing to consider is that not all your viewers have the professional tools and space you do to make such quality cabinets. If I did this, my cabinets would look more like a birdhouse made for kids 😂. Great video and very insightful!

    So was your time worth 400$?
    I think I'd rather buy and save that time for the rebuild, especially if its a flipped home where time is of the essence.
    Good work though, your quality is probably better.

    I'm no master like you A. You kill this type of build, big thumbs up Just an observation, would having a cut list for the cabinets and knocking them out fast, with repeatable cuts for the carcases help? Time and accuracy wise. Then the face frames. Just asking for a friend.😃

    Great video man. I have some poplar doors that need to be sprayed, but everything I see online says to use oil-based primer to prevent grain raise and bleed through. Do you use water based, pr do you use oil based primer?

    It looks great. Honestly, the only thing I didn't like is that void in the corner that is unusable (unless I missed something). Both for the upper and lower cabinets. That is a ton of space that could still be storage if you build the cabinets right.
