All the sounds you hear on this song are produced by one guitar, played live by one person. Additional effects (Reverb Spike, Octave, Wah, Delay) produced by the guitar pedals on the floor.
Mike Dawes uses the Dimarzio Black Angel magnetic pickup and Ernie Ball Aluminium Bronze strings.
"Overload is based on a jam I came up with in the bathroom of the Blue Note in New York (great reverb by the way!) The tune stemmed from this rhythmic hook and followed me all over the world. It ultimately ended up being composed entirely on the road.
Overload is about the chaos of urban life, travelling, digital media, all the distractions that keep you away from yourself, and time to breathe within your own space. It can all get a little much sometimes."

Igor Presnyakov Igor. You are also a guitar god! I love your videos and have been following you for some years now. I also enjoy how you occasionally sing the lyrics of your song like you cant hold it back :)
That's pure madness sir. Thank you

I think I just figured out what separates Mike Dawes from the common herd of modern fingerstylists, and makes his music so ravishingly, insanely appealing: It's his masterful control of dynamics and time.
There's none of that irritatingly repetitious "bum-thwack, bum-thwack" percussive rhythm stuff that so many of the other guys get stuck on. Mike's compositions are incredibly deft and lively, with mind bending syncopation, and polyrhythmic juju, like an incredibly athletic dance routine, and surprising and joyful twists and turns that you weren't expecting, but are perfectly in the pocket- that just grabs you from the first note and carries you all along, breathless, until the final, perfect explanation point at the end.
Mike is ALWAYS startlingly original, fun, and amazing. Very few (if any) of the others can pull it off the way Mike does, with such effortless timing and deftness of technique...
Stephen Sheriff You ever consider writing song lyrics? The way you wrote that flowed marvelously!
Thanks, Sal- I've written lots of songs, and played the guitar for forty-some years- but I haven't a tenth of the talent or ability of Mike Dawes. I'm content to noodle in obscurity, and spend my time building guitars. Again, Mike is an inspiration: could I build a guitar good enough to put into Mike's hands? I've made over a hundred acoustics, many of them pretty damn fine- but I still have some woodsheddin' to do, to catch up with Mike...
Stephen Sheriff Do you have any recommendations of good finger style guitarists ? I have just started getting into the genre. At present, I like Sungha Jung, Gabriella Quevedo, Gareth Evans. Now, I've started to discover other people like paddy Sun, Mike Dawes, Andy McKee, Calum Graham, Luca Stricagnoli, Antoine Deflour. I found all these people in the last few days. Lol.

@saikat93ify Michael Hedges
Thanks for the love through the pandemic folks! Please do hit 'like' & comment below, it really helps with the algorithm stuff which means I ultimately make more music. If you subscribe and hit the bell I'll give you a real life in person sweaty post-show hug one day! x
Waiting for the hug since Day 1
Empecé a tocar después de 30 años. Me acordaba algo de May you nevera, me ha emocionado encontrar alguien tan especial otra vez (Hendrix, Metheny, Paco, Stanley Jordan, tu. Te espero en Galicia España
No se me olvida Jhon Martyn
Tried to play this on a real guitar, failed. Then tried to play this on my air guitar, failed again. Damn you Mr. Dawes.
Vincent Romaszewski I laughed out loud at this
Try again bro this time loosen your form on the air neck lmao
Another stunning piece of work bro!!
Indeed Rob ;)
I see your comment on this video and my mind automatically goes to an acoustic Chapman, maybe I'm just crazy though
Chappers does not lie
hey rob!
Oh hey it's the Chapman!
Masterful composition, brilliant technique! I can only imagine the hassle of tabbing this one out.
Imagine, learning it right.
The tab wouldn't be of any use - I have it but find it impossible to follow
He's definitely taking the percussive elements to a whole other level.
Nicolaevici Bogdan and keepin his wrist beating on... Amazing
Hands Down the Best acoustic Guitarist This Decade. Everyone who I have showed him to always drops their jaw within the first 10 seconds. Before Mike Dawes I didn't know Guitars could sound like that live. Truly the GOAT!!!
Every now and then I go out and comb through youtube to find something inspiring and just so immersive to listen to and finally have found you, Mike, among all of the others. I am so glad for it. Your playing is daring and beautiful and different from all of the rest. Thank you so much for working so hard to bring your art to a place that transcends tricks and techniques and is actually musical. Soooo good!!
Thanks Mark
What Mark said! Yeah!
"Overload is about the chaos of urban life, travelling, digital media, all the distractions that keep you away from yourself, and time to breathe within your own space. It can all get a little much sometimes."
My 'state of spirit' lately, maybe explains why I've been listening to this song way too much.
Absolutely nothing like witnessing a master at his craft. Inspirational.
bravo 🙌🙌🙌 Mr. Dawes 🙏🙏🙏
Nggarap iki mbois pisan cak. Hehe
Let's agree Mike is the best
I rarely comment on RUclips videos, but Mike... you're a frikken genius. This track tickles so many of my special spots. Thank you so much for the music you make.
Why does this guy not have millions of comments? He's literally a wizard. Thank your lucky stars you were born after the 1600's...
Bringing relaxedness and warmheartedness into complexites is a secret of healing. You are a great healer, thank you brother
Well done mate! Stunning!
I still remember jamming together over this a few years ago! Cheers!
Ah damn yeah, that was the core of this tune. Good times, lets play again.
Oh my days. Just flawless. World-class playing right there...
Five years later, still one of the best things about a wonderful planet.
What great energy and technique. It does what music should do: brings joy, enrichment and delight.
Didn't know Shaggy is such an awesome guitarist. :D
Original comment award ^
hahahah youre right. he does look shaggy. i was wondering the whole time this guy is so familiar
shaggy from scoobydoo? haha n1
I think I love you
Send in your picture and let us judge you too that can only be fair now... Fool....
I could listen to the first 35 seconds of this song on repeat for days. So funky - I love it!
Do you draw your strength from the light of our yellow sun? Because I swear to God, you're super human. Truly interplanetary!
You know it's a dayum good song when it hast both melody & rhythm.
Hats off mate.
All songs have melody and rhythm, 2 parts of what define a song.
wrathVchild : Not per se; but for this particular one I would say that it has a *catchy* melody & rhythm.
This NEVER gets old.
I WISH I could play that. GORGEOUS
Same here
You can😀
This is great. I love acoustic music and started playing stuff like Michael Hedges and Pierre Bensusan in my uni days back in the late 90s. I got bored very quickly though because most people's stuff is very repetitive and, to me, unimaginative. "okay here's my riff, I'm going to play this for 3mins, you're impressed, right?". This is a breath of fresh air. great stuff. glad to have found you, thanks RUclips.
I'm at a loss as to how anyone could give this a thumbs down. I have no clue. beautiful. period.
Elegance, precision, control; everything is on point. Truly mesmerizing.
I honestly didn't think you could get better. It's been a joy to watch you grow as an artist Mike. Congratulations, I knew you'd make it here
Oh my God, new song from Mike. I am in heaven!!!!!
you have no idea how genius you are man, thats such a revolution in the classic way of play figerstyle/percussive
Tasteful and effective deployment of FX which serves this really nice piece well. Kudos!!!
Never thought anyone could ever rival the uniqueness of Michael Hedges but holy s**t that is some inspiring and amazing playing Mike ! WOW !
The whole song is beautiful Mike. Today you made a grown man cry
I just saw you in Portsmouth New Hampshire, in the US.....WOW.....the show was everything I had hoped for, except you didn't play Overload! Come back to Portsmouth soon, we loved you@
I have played guitar longer than you have lived, Mike - and l honestly say that l never seen/heard a better fingerstyle guitarist that you. Yes, you have Antoine, Andy, Calum, Don who is insainly good - but you bring the whole percussion/flow/technical mastering to another level. Amazing.
After falling in and out of love with CandyRat, Mike Dawes is still amazing. Where many of his contemporary slap-tapping fingerstylists drone on, Mike keeps up with the technical virtuosity but also makes beautiful music. A trio could play this song and it would still be great.
It is a sonic work of art in harmony and percussion. The rhythm and groove that ensues from 2:57 to 3:15 are hauntingly beautiful!
I am watching You playing all the time. Amazing
0:36 is beautiful, man this guy is cool
Mike is the coolest guy ever.
Chunky as fk Mike. You never cease to amaze.
Another masterpiece by the incomparable Mike Dawes...One of my fave guitarist/musician on the current scene right now and a long time to come. Was this shot live? anyway...keep inspiring us . I certainly am inspired by this young virtuoso known by the name MIke Dawes
Thanks for being alive Mike Dawesome
I don't comment on youtube videos, but this time I can't help it. This is awesome, really. Cheers from Argentina!
Loving the cool rhythms! Kept my ears on its toes throughout the whole time
I love so much your approach of rhythm. All is so balanced and elegant.
The best guitarist the world has ever seen! Great job Mike!
I still can't accept the fact that all of the sound is coming from one guitar. Beautiful
Well it was, now it came of your loudspeaker(s) ;p
Mike can I thank you for bringing the sheer joy of a human being doing something so well and so beautifully into my day....listening and watching you play is good for the soul....bless you!
Holy! Mike you're like my favorite solo guitarist ever you're a total genius man watching you play gives me great motivation into moving forward to guitar fingerstyle. You're a true inspiration 😀
Am now JUST realizing, you played that riff on your Tonewood Amp test video- so epic to hear an entire composition out of that!
Once again, an excellent work of art, Mr. Dawes. 🔥🔥🔥
so very musical...just lovely
Amazing that the more I listen to this piece , the more it starts to make sense. It's an incredible piece of work and I feel the more times you listen to it you get a real feel for how Mike wrote it. You're an absolute inspiration Mike. Keep doing what you do. The world is better with you doing what you do!
So good I want to cry.
You're a true inspiration man. I love this.
Amazing! Wonderful! Beautiful! Thx for your inspiration!
That’s like a whole fucking band playing! With soul, just for a bonus!
Stellar skill demonstration mr.dawes
+mikedawesofficial, Your heavy use of slides, and bends, together with spot on percussion and some subtle guitar effects to spice things up, makes your songs interesting to listen to and sets them apart from many of the other good fingerstyle guitarists. Good work!
Hoping to see you in Sweden!
Love this tune and the message behind it. Great job, Mike. You never cease to amaze me!!
You're a magician of sound.
And just another masterpiece by Mr. Dawes.
His dynamics are astounding .
Healthy and very happy Mike Dawes sensei.
It's awesome what you are doing!!!! I am so happy to watch your videos! Keep on rocking. Lately I've been doing some songs into same direction!! Greetings from Finland!!!
Goosebumps... period
In my opinion your best piece until now!! There is so much variety in this one song, really great!
Finally!!!!! You teased abit of this song in your tutorial video and i was hoping a full version existed and here it is!! :D
OMG... I was first influenced by Chet Atkins, then Tommy Emmanuel, but this off the charts cool! Love your style and execution.
I am certain I will never be able to play like this, but hope to take what I can from your style and modify my own. Thank you for sharing!
what a masterpiece
Mind blowing can't believe it. Yo my frikin' hero!
One man band Mike playing with such an ease and passion I must wonder how he does it.
So excellent !! mike dawes you are awsome congrats !!! please come to portugal one day !!!
Un. Freakin'. Real. Just amazing. Holy CARP is this good.
Very elegant fingerwork 👍🏼❤️
beautiful.
simply beautiful.
Mike is a true master of his instrument. Always amazing
The headstock cam shot is sweet!
This is such an under rated video; you need 6 million views to give this justice
Its because this video was not uploaded through Candyratrecords channel where most of the modern fingerstyle guitarist upload. Mike has his own channel he is boss.
What a groove at the start of the piece!!
you have inner peace its all your man!!
I play, but cannot read musical scores (self taught). But I would love to see your tunes on paper! I doubt it can be done. Stunning work. Not sure what planet you are from, but I'm glad you visited mine! See you soon. ; )
Phenomenal to say the least.
Outstanding. Who would possibly down-vote this stellar performance?
sounds very unbelieveble, everything is good !
This gave me goose bumps, no joke. Though I'm not surprised considering it's Mike Dawes.
