Wrong spray foam around the window! Broke the window? Window Insulation

What will happen if I install the wrong spray foam around the window. many time when you do diy spray foam insulation as your window insulation has many opinions on what works. many people believe it will break if you use spray foam. Here is the test where i use strong spray foam insulation.

I love that you did this but I believe the "experiment" is incomplete because, as you noted, you didn't install the stops (you said jambs). Therefore the foam just took the path of least resistance and squirted outward. Keep up the great content!

I know this is a old video but the reason you don't use the gap filler is because it's a more dense closed cell foam. Verse the window and door with that reasoning over time as the house settles and shifts the big gap doesn't collapse as much if any to allow the window and doors to shift with the house

I've used gaps and cracks spray foam on metal/aluminum windows and on pre-hung fire doors without any issues. I would advise that you use window and door spray foam if you are sealing up a vinyl window or a wood door frame.

The real issue is with summer weather. uPVC frames expands with heat. If the foam is inflexible the frame may buckle.

My wife had me spray foam the door jams I just installed. I said it didn’t need it. Guess what. They won’t open now!

I’m surprised it didn’t squeeze the window too much. My dad used the wrong foam with a door and caused the frame to bulge and almost made it so you couldn’t open the door. It was a mess.

I can tell you that your result is not always the case. Don't do it!! Wrong foam will warp frames and cause the windows to not open or close. Also I question if 20 hours is enough to sure foam all the way.

That's weird I usually put silicone since it's way more dense and water can't form inside because it has no gaps relative to foam

Should foam always be used if there are gaps around the window? I just had new windows installed, there were gaps, and they used trim to cover them but no foam.

Absolutely, yes. If they didn't use it. It just lazy and trying to get the job done as cheap as possible. It's easy to do. And you don't have to fill the gap all they way up. Like he did in the video. Just try to get it even. Then you don't have such a mess to clean up. Then if you have to use caulk.

Run the same test over a 6'x3' window, I think you'll find a different story if you were to use the wrong spray foam.
