      But I remember getting a program for the 1997 interstate batteries 500 at Texas(the inaugural race) and seeing the #8 circuit city Ford thunderbird and thinking it looked amazing and that lake had the coolest name in nascar, I remember pulling for Mark Martin(my favorite driver), but I always had a backup guy when I watched in case Mark didn't finish, who I picked before the race
      That race I chose Lake Speed

    Lake Speed has to be one of the most interesting and coolest guys in NASCAR history. Going to Europe and being a World Karting Champion is incredible. He ran his own Kart parts company since he was 16 years old. To back that up with running his own NASCAR team and winning is something else. And as we can see in this video, he is a down to earth guy. I glad that you were able to get to spend so much time with him and his son.
    Did you notice that the fuel tank on the championship kart is just a plastic jug with the handle going through the steering shaft and the jug taped to the kart.
    Many people have wondered how Lake would have done if he went to Indy cars, Formula cars or some other road race series.

    He was always completely confident in his proclamation of his faith and giving God all the credit for his success.
    He was a completely independent team.
    One of the ONLY products I have ever went to the store and bought because I saw it advertised on the side of a (Lake's) race car was Bull's Eye BBQ sauce. Still my favorite!

    When I saw your video about Lake Speed I was ecstatic! I was a Lake Speed fan and I met him in an awkward way. After the Pocono race where he was injured, I stopped by to see him in the hospital. We chatted about that disappointing flat tire at Darlington and I expressed my best wishes to him. He was soft spoken and kind considering a stranger just walked in to see him. Looking back, it was sketchy on my part but I was so concerned and felt like I needed to wish him the best in person. If I recall, it was a bad day with accidents, Harry Gant was hospitalized in Allentown, and Lake along with Buddy Arrington were in the Wilkes Barre area hospital. I also visited Buddy who was in the middle of his dinner, I dropped off a get well card and he asked me to come back in an hour to chat. I did return and we had a nice conversation. More tragedy stuck team Arrington the following week when he put Rick Baldwin in the cart to run Michigan and was killed. I will never forget that. It is incredible how a man of your age is so into the NASCAR history, I applaud you!

    10:13- Concerning the broken parts:
    1. I think the first piece he picked up is the forward half of a pinion gear, as I seem to recall a string of similar failures. The idea is, you pull into the pits, get your service done, and when you dump the clutch to leave...you'd snap off that piece of the pinion gear, clean as glass. One specific example I think was Michael Waltrip in the Pennzoil car, and another example of metallurgy having not yet caught up to the HP race.
    2. The intake valve looks like it broke the lock (two little half-moon pieces that lock it in place up top), once again, a metallurgy failures.
    3. The small round bit...no idea what that was, I didn't get a good look at it.

    I was in the Army in 1986. We were on Christmas break from Basic Training while stationed at Fort McClellan AL. The base chaplains took our group Talladega Speedway for a tour. While we were there Lake Speed was testing his Pontiac Grand Prix still in primer red paint. He graciously took the car around the track a couple of times so we could see a car go around the track. I never forgot this and always looked at the race stats after a NASCAR race to see how he did during the race. Thanks Lake Speed!😂

    I have a lot of memories of what you are telling about here. I was at the track competing against Lake's team with various other smaller teams which were about the same caliber at the time. The shop and team setup was very similar and knowing some of the guys from the garage area every weekend was a neat experience to have gone through while the sport was still expanding into what it once was. I am glad I got to live it in real time and seeing this video really brings it all back home.

    Wild to think I know exactly where Lake hit that 92.8mph at New Castle. Been racing there for years. Wonder what he could've done in F1 if it really was just a big go-kart.
    I'd reckon in another universe he's a F1 World Champ.

      I agree completely

    • @RLRSwanson
      @RLRSwanson 2 года назад +1

      Very likely on skill alone, however a lot of the alternate universe success would've depended on getting into the right team at the right time, with all of the political intrigue, influx of money and rapid advances in the tech side of things going on at the time in F1. Not to mention how dangerous it stil was at the time, there were several fatal or career ending crashes between Lake Speed winning the Karting World Championship and Ayrton Senna winning his first Grand Prix.
      Lake also mentioning Elio de Angelis brings up another sobering point, both Elio and Ayrton were killed at the wheel of an F1 car.

    • @mistertheking
      @mistertheking 2 года назад +1

      @@RLRSwanson Very true, but there has to be one universe out there where it all aligned for Lake. I think especially with his timing of winning a karting world championship in the same year Mario Andretti became the last American to win a F1 championship. It seems as if Lake Speed could have possibly been the next driver to do that if his career took him down that path. Back then, though, everyone still needed significant backing to get them in the door to a F1.

    • @RLRSwanson
      @RLRSwanson 2 года назад +1

      @@mistertheking Even in a not perfectly aligned universe where he went to F1 he would've done way better than say, Eddie Cheever. Just from carrying the momentum over to the next step and maybe having better inroads to the better teams like Lotus or Brabham were at the time...and stayed away from factory teams like Ferrari, Renault or Alfa Romeo who just couldn't keep their s*** together as a team to win championships or repeat successes going into the 80s...or just descending into a complete farce, despite many times having the fastest or simply the best cars in the field.
