    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  4 года назад +1

      Yes, sorry I didn’t include any video of that. It basically works exactly as if you were using Google maps on a smart phone and getting turn by turn walking directions. Instead of the audio coming out of the phone it comes out of the cane. But everything else is exactly the same.

    So here’s my honest review of the WeWalk smart Cane. Just for reference, I am a low vision cane user, not completely blind. While I think the idea is a great one, I feel like there is room for improvement. I think it should have different vibration levels for the proximity to the obstacle.
    My main issue was that I had difficulty telling the difference between the vibrations from my cane tip on the ground, and the vibration of the unit alerting me. Perhaps an auditory wud would work as well?
    Overall, I think it’s a great idea, but it could use some tweaks. Not to mention the unit that I borrowed was mounted on a cane that was short for 5’0” O&M coach and I’m 6’7”!

  • @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674
    @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 4 года назад +5

    This is definitely a cool cane. The only thing I'm thinking is what happens when the strap wears out over time. I know I could fix it but I know people that usually just toss out their canes when this happens. I wonder how hard it would be to change that cable when it does wear out.
    Definitely a neat white cane. I would love to try it one day and I think you did a very honest review.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  4 года назад +1

      The cane part itself is actually just like any other cane. Instead of having the traditional golf club handle, it has a small adapter that the elastic cord connects to. The adapter is what screws into the handle with the electronics. So changing out the cord would be exactly the same, and maybe even slightly easier, as a regular cane.

    I'll stick to my folding graphite cane or my NFB rigid cane. That handle seems so bulky and like the whole thing would be really top-heavy. I understand what they're trying to do and it's not a bad idea, but it feels like the cane isn't the right form factor. A cane should be lightweight, comfortable to use for long periods of time, weatherproof, durable, and you shouldn't be out $500 of it gets dropped down a flight of stairs or bangs into stuff repeatedly.

    • @jkholtgreve
      @jkholtgreve 4 года назад +1

      I was always taught that the cane was just basically an extension of your forefinger, more or less a fifth appendage. The bulkiness just doesn’t strike me as feeling “natural”, nor does the handle design. I’m pretty sure this wasn’t designed by someone who had traditional cane technique drilled into them the way I did as a child.

    • @kellimshaver

      @ghost mall I'm guessing the limiting factors on reducing the size are manufacturing cost vs. demand and battery life.

    Thank you for the review 😊 one other thing I found out about the cane is that you can’t use it in the rain! To me as a full time long cane user I find this fact makes the cane completely useless xxx

    •  4 года назад

      Leigh Needham actually I just learned that they produced some thing like a case for this issue. You put it on, it’s rain proof and does not affect the quality of the obstacle detector.

    • @Leighnine
      @Leighnine 4 года назад

      Benay Gözkaman Music as far as I can see they are still only selling it without a rainproof case and no mention anywhere of the fact it needs one or how you would go about buying it, I’m sure it is useful to some people but I find it ridiculous that you would even consider making a cane in the first place that isn’t going to cope with rain

    Can you lower the volume on the cane, so that students with sounds and the sensitivities will not be as frightened of a high volume voice? Sam, there is a way to use your cane without using your wrist tendons. I haven’t actually tried it much, but I have heard of it from an ONM instructor named Benjamin verse alone. He said to hold the cane with your palm up, so hold a cane with your hand underneath it on the handle. Then, making sure two of your fingers (preferably the thumb and index finger) are kind of in a circle, open and close your hand. This will have the cane move from side to side. I personally don’t like this method, as I have always been a wrist mover. However, to each his own.

    As cool as it sounds, I doubt I'll ever get my hands on one.
    I do not think the cane could withstand the weather here in the New England area, and it sounds like it could be very heavy.

    I forgot to ask, is the cane at your preferred height? If not, of course, you can use your own cane. I would have liked to find out how you would use your own cane, even putting it on your identification cane just for demonstration purposes.

      Not sure if they come in different sizes, the one I had is about 55 inches long. I believe it’s aluminum.

    I see how this could be really good for some people… It just scares me that it’s not waterproof and a few other things. For me personally I would rather use my guide dog than ANY cane still, but I know that’s not for everyone 🦯 ❤️ ( I also have Stargardt’s).

    We've tested a similar cane in the Netherlands (Mobilo 2.1) Which had a little bit of an accuracy problem while navigating, which made it (in my opinion) quite useless. Have you tested the navigation function?

    Hi.
    It sounds like a nice device although, here in South Africa, it's not safe to use with a phone at all so, it will be a big risk for us to use it with the phone.
    If it has gps on its own, well, then it would be a little bit safer to use.
    Although, I'm already feeling unsafe walking with a normal folding cane and so, walking with that gadget along with my phone in my pocket, will put me on edge for sure.
    Since I started using a guide dog, I can't stand a cane since it makes me feel open and not safe.
    I do use my cane when I have no choice like now since my guide dog past away last year.

      Yes, they give you an adapter that you attached to the top of your cane. You will need to take the handle off the cane to put the adapter on. However, once you do, the adapter lets you screw it into the we walk handle.
