Yesterday I had my first cane mobility training. I live in an old city and we have cobblestone and brick sidewalks. The instructor had a variety of cane tips and the best cane tip became readily evident. Pencil tip, marshmallow tip, rolling marshmallow tip, glide tip, ceramic tip were not meant for brick or cobblestone. The 2" roller ball tip was the perfect all-terrain tip for me. Never would have chosen it, it simply was too obvious to ignore. Best part is I can look up from the ground when walking and not stare at the ground with my low vision looking for hazards. That is fantastic alone.
I regularly use a metal tip cane when not using my dog guide, I find it best for two point touch. I like the way it makes noise, I can tell when I am walking past hallways without having to touch the wall constantly.
Wow, I never knew there are so many options.. I am a long distance walker - around 2 hours daily. And the marshmallow tip - wears out. I go through 1 tip per month+. Just ordered the Omni tip- I have high hopes 🤞🏼🤞🏼
My favorite tip which I haven’t seen you cover yet is a disc shaped tip which I believe is called a jumbo roller it’s just shaped like a flat disc and I use that on my cane. It is made out of a similar material as the ball. And I started using it a couple years ago and I have never looked back.
HI, Sam thanks for all that.. I was recently in a Rehab Center for my spouse. He is blind and using a walker. I still use my no jab. The Physical Therapist and Occupational therapist were talking about blind persons walking skills. I introduced them to the idea of what O&M is. and to youtube videos.
I absolutely love the jumbo bought it I feel like when you have that on your cane it picks up things on surfaces really easily and just keeps you safe to be honest
Hello Sam. Thank you for the video. Here in France we don’t have so much choices. I am using a small rolling ball attached to a spring. The spring helps to reduces vibrations and the ball I good to go over cracks. I know a lot of people who purchased this spring tip but it seems you don’t have it in USA so I wanted to share it with you 🙂 In France, as long as I know, there is only one organization who is employing impaired people to make the canes. We don’t have innovations like Ambutech canes. It’s hard to find the tips you present or carbon fiber canes…
Very interesting video! I tried the pencil tip, the metal tip, the fix marshmallow tip and I'm hopeless with those🤣🤣 I like my marchmallow willing tip or the tennis ball one! I live in the suburbs of Paris lots of concrete, stones, grass etc... I couldn't change now! I don't use my cane as identification so tips that don't roll are a real pain!😊👋
Hello Sam. I am an Aussie and I live in remote Tasmania. I only use the Omni sense tip as our ground store a lot. I also do bushwalking and the Omni sense ha she’s it with ease. Here in Australia I hexes not found one instructor willing to train with it so I put it through its laces myself. I also have a WeWALK cane I use with the Omni on it. It works better than any other top I have ever had. Regards Jim
I was using the roller ball. It was hanging up on the broken sidewalks. I switched to the wheel tip. It's more for broken concrete and wide gaps. It works well on off road areas. It does give much feed back.
Thank you SO much for acknowledging that the metal glide ... kind of sucks! Well, it does for me! If I even think about using constant contact rather than two-point touch the thing snags on everything!
Hello Sam, thank you su much for the review. I used the roller ball tip. Had a lot of trouble with my elbow and shoulder. When I saw the Omni Sense tip I did order it with good hope. It's the best tip ever. Yes, it is a little bit heavier. But The best tip ever! I walk better, it takes less of my energy. So happy and for me really worth the cost. The only thing i didn't try (because it isn;t in my neighbor hood) is walking on sand. Thanks again Sam. I hope more people in the netherlands will try the omni sense tip.
I used the roller ball and even the jumbo roller disc shape, then discovered the flexy tip (Ambutech) it goes over just as much without the loud rolling bearings and is much smoother too
Very informative thank you!! I’m starting to use a long cane after only carrying an ID cane for a little awhile. It can be overwhelming at first because of all the options. Glad I found your channel.
Hi Sam, I'm always excited to learn more about the white cane. :) My go-to was recommended to me by the o and m specialist after I let them know I live in a rural area and don't always have sidewalks to walk on. It's a fiarly heavy white resin disc, maybe an inch and a half to two inches diiameter that mounts sideways on my cane tip in comparison to the rolling tip that looks like a little tire you mention at the end of your video. So it rolls, but only side to side. I have used it on uneven firmer ground like an ireggular grassy area with no issues, but in looser substrate like the gravel on the side of a road, it slops around quite a bit. It handles grooves in concrete sidewalks all right so long as I'm using good technique, but I've also had it get ccaught in the grooves if I'm not paying enough attention. Keep in mind, I'm a very new cane user so there's the potential for user error being a bigger problem than the can tip itself. Because the tip is mountd sideways on the end, that means my cane doesn't fold down very flat, and doesn't fit in a cane holder I modified from a belt clip cell phone holder. Because it's resin, there's a lot of vibration that gets transmitted up to my hand. I walked two miles with it along the local pavement, and my hand felt the vibration for hours afterwards.
Thank you so much for your video, I have just received a mobility cane from the eye unit where I have been receiving diabetic eye treatment and your videos are very helpful and just interesting, God bless and thanks again joe
Super helpful video and great timing for me as I'm adjusting to my first white cane and am a manual wheelchair user. I'm going to get to try out the wheelbarrow style one at my next O&M appointment as we try to settle in what will work best for me for some wheeling use and some just investigating. I'm definitely an unusual use case so maybe the unusual tip will work well 😊
I have impaired hand mobility and found with the marshmallow tip that it did indeed get stuck in crannies (not grannies) a fair bit, so I tried a ball tip and I liked the roll but it also made my cane rather heavy at the tip. I plan to try the sandpaper thing cuz tif that works for me, that would be sublime!
Hey, there's a really awesome tip for Ambutech canes. It's ceramic and I love it. It has become my dayly driver. I was hoping to see someone else's thoughts on it!
I just started using a marshmellow roller instead of roller ball and the difference is night and day! The marshmellow roller is so much lighter and my hand doesn't get cramps anymore, the only down side is I do find it gets caught a bit more but I just have to move it a bit differently and good to go! 🎉
What I need to know is what brand of cane and brand of tips are interchangeable. I need a new cane and want to get a brand with lots of tip options. Right now, ny folding cane has a pencil tip and can not be changed. Are some brands of canes better than others? Are some brands of tips better than others? When I was a kid in the early 70s, we had one choice, a solid cane with metal tip. Now there are so may options, it is overwhelming. There really needs to be a serious discussion on cane brands, as aposed to cany types.
This was so cool you introduced them other came tip that I have not seen nor used awesome I came tip that I refuse in the winter or when I'm going to be out in the grass it looks like a hockey puck and it rolls it rolls and its Constant Contact it is a little bit heavy on the cane that Glide across the grass and snow easily and it is a hook cane tip that I use on my ambutech came so thank you again and have a great day
Hi Sam I have usher syndrome myself and my blance yo use my cane as well so I got my omin wheels it great too I use it spring and summer but I use my red rolling balls tips in the winter cuz I has snow in Canada too sam I love my omin wheels it cool to use I use my omin wheels a summer and spring to use my omin wheels all times my favorite too sam hope y have a great day and tks
I have I'd cane with red rolling ball cuz great with vibrant for me loving it cuz I have usher syndrome myself and my disability balances too got use to.it now
Have you heard of the Braun Bell Concept Mug? I have seen it on the web but not where,if at all, it could be purchased. It would be a great addition for all lindane partially sighted people…..
Nice video on cane tips. I've been an O&M for 21 years. Like your demonstration of being in-step and in- rhythm when you're walking. Have you tried the Dakota disk for rough terrain made of natural materials? Take care.
Hi everyone, I am relatively new to this gentleman‘s channel. I stumbled across it a couple of days ago. And, some interesting cane tips. Something I’ve never heard of. Right now, I’m primarily a guide dog user but, i use the cane when I need to. And I am primarily a metal cane tip user. I also, appreciate the tips that he gave while traveling in Europe. The cobblestones, I would have not thought about destroying arcane tips. Here in America, we usually have good sidewalk pavement. Not the old cobblestones.
I see this is a couple of years old, but I'll share the comment I wrote before noticing the date. I'm a guide dog user so I don't use canes a lot. I have arthritis in my hands and some shoulder problems that don't conflict with how I hold a guide dog handle but are just so uncomfortable and tiring when using a cane. But I also don't like constant contact and really can't use the rolling ball tips. I feel like constant contact is constant jarring discomfort travelling up the cane. So, that said, I found my ideal cane tip and it's not one you've mentioned. I have no idea how widely it's available but I got my last cane from Ambutech, honestly, because I loved the idea of all their color options. It's called a Flex tip and is described on the Ambutech site as "A bell shaped tip with a flexible neck designed to bounce over uneven surfaces, made from an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene that lasts 2 or 3 times longer than a regular tip. This 1.75” / 4.5 cm sized tip is used with the two-point touch technique. so, I love this tip so much I could do commercials for it. Yes, I'm tapping it but the flexible neck acts like a shock absorber, so the feedback from it is great but gentle, super light. It works on any surface I've tried, and *never* gets stuck, but I do mostly use it on concrete or asphalt sidewalks and paths, sometimes dirt, in New York City, but have used it on much rougher surfaces also. I didn't even remember reading that part of the description about how long it can last. I was starting to think I should buy an extra tip as even though I don't use it a lot, it would suck to need it and have the tip break down. I should anyway. I only got the one because it was an experiment. But you should let people know about it. I can't imagine anyone not loving it, who taps their cane instead of rolling it I even bet it would win over some who use a rolling ball. I even look forward to trying it out in places I hope to someday visit, that have cobblestones.
Hi Sam have you tried the jumbo roller? It is shaped like a hockey puck and rolls on the edge. I find it better when walking trails in the woods and on grass than the rollerball. Also for walking on grass and the beach I like the Dakota Disc it does look as though you are minesweeping though. I’ll add a link to my video of me using my 3 tips (rollerball, jumbo roller, and Dakota disc) as a reply to this comment.
I have quite a collection of tips, but prefer my jumbo roller, as it glides over obstacles as well as, or better than the jumbo ball tip, but with slightly less weight. I also recently got a ceramic tip, just to see what it's like, and it's tiny! Probably small than the marshmallow tip, which means it gets stuck in everything! I'm eagerly awaiting the OmniSense shipping to the UK!
Actually, I just recorded some footage for an upcoming video where I test out the different tips on the beach. At the risk of spoiling the video, the Dakota disc was the winner. Best tip to use on the beach.
Thanks Sam.. I got the OrCam READ.. I love it.. it has some trouble with low light, too much light on low contrast font, or columns that run next to each other.. LOL.. But for contracts, it is great.. You just have to take the document in a place where you can avoid talking or noise.. I'm at a stage where i need what i think you called the guide cane. I still see the place i want to get.. but the close up stuff like curbs, cut outs , stairs are very difficult because i've lost my depth perception.. I avoid stairs like the plague.. (are we allowed to use that word in this political climate? LOL) How do they measure a person for a guide cane? is it from the ground to where the wrist bends..? I think that is how a walking cane is measured then round up. I don't need support like a walking cane I tripped the other day on what i thought was a cut out.. It was a curb and i went to the ground with my groceries..
Hi Sam I have usher syndrome myself I use my cane for my disability balance just wonder it white rolling ball on your cane is heavier than omins red wheels sam I needed your adivce tks hope y have a great day
I didn’t necessarily forget to mention the tip, I was mainly demonstrating the tips that I have. There are actually several tips that I didn’t mention in the video, Dakota disc, ceramic tip, etc.
This is great information! What kind of canes do these tips fit on? I use a graphite revolution with a marshmallow roller but not all tips are compatible with certain tips. I’m curious about the Omni tip because I walk a lot over various terrain.
It might work OK in the weeds. Parenthetically, years ago this was called a Bandoo basher. This is made mostly for the weeds but frankly if you’re having that kind of trouble.
Check out the original Omni sense video. In that video I do a very thorough comparison between it and the rolling ball tip. I also describe the tip and talk about the size and weight.
Some certain tips are made out of graphite. Most are some type of plastic, although I’m not sure what type. Some tips are even made out of ceramic and metal.
Can you please tell me where I can get the metal glide tip for my cane? It looks like the one on MaxiAids only works with a .5 inch and not blind cane. The image you put up in this video also looks like the tip is wider than the sleeve, and I have yet to find anything else that matches it. Please help.
Metal glide Tip is miss named. It doesn’t glide and proponents don’t expect it to glide. This is strictly a two point touch tip. proponents like the sound feedback and a little of the tactile feedback but proponents of this tip will probably think that a roller tip gives them too much information.
Can you get the omni tip in the uk please help me I don’t use my cane cause I had enough of getting the ball stuck but I need to use it I am losing my sight
Sorry, the comment about Vandhu basher was about all-terrain tip. Not good with two point touch. I tried it on the beach in Corpus Christi and really didn’t find it useful at all. If you’re in the high weeds, again, Dakota disc is better.
Anyone know where I can purchase a light weight carbon fiber collapsible white cane with a metal glide tip I purchased a cane from maxiaids sometime back but it’s a heavy collapsible cane with a long white round tip and it hurts my wrist with long distance walks
Two options, check the NFB store. That’s the type of canes that they sell and you can get either a long straight cane or a folding cane. I bought a seven segment folding cane with a metal glide tip from them and I love it, one of my favorite canes. The other option is to Google Chris Parks canes. He’s the one that makes those lightweight cans with the metal tips.
Hi Sam I have usher syndrome I use my cane for my disability balance just wonder your white rolling ball on your cane is more heavy than omins wheels what your name brand of your while rolling ball tip on your cane Sam just wonder hope u have a great day
There’s a type of cane that is specifically used for identification. It tends to be smaller and more thin than the canes used for navigation. They are often just called ID canes. So someone that has low vision and might not need a cane for navigation, can Carrie and I D cane so that people around them will know that they may need help
So I'm sighted and I don't wanna sound dismissive of your capabilities but how do you drive? My intuition says that wouldn't be safe, but my knowledge on how the visually impaired navigate through the world is intensely patchy.
I’m not totally blind but I am legally blind. I don’t have any central vision. By the way, I loved watching your movies back in the 80s! Up in smoke is hilarious!
Yesterday I had my first cane mobility training. I live in an old city and we have cobblestone and brick sidewalks. ceremic tips are also good for producing the nice sharp noise
Wow, I never knew there are so many options.. I am a long distance walker - around 2 hours daily. And the marshmallow tip - wears out.

Hello Sam.
Thank you for the video.
Here in France we don’t have so much choices.
I am using a small rolling ball attached to a spring. The spring helps to reduces vibrations and the ball I good to go over cracks.

In France, as long as I know, there is only one organization who is employing impaired people to make the canes. We don’t have innovations like Ambutech canes.
It’s hard to find the tips you present or carbon fiber canes…
Oh wow, I never knew there was such a difference in other countries. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for the info. I use a rolling ball tip but in the past I’ve seen a pear tip and a u.f.o. tip too.

I recently purchased the omni sense tip and I love it. It works awesome on virtually any terrain.
Can you provide the website fir this tip?
Susan, I ordered mine from the low vision shop. The website is Thelowvisionshop.com
That’s awesome, glad to hear it! Also, thank you so much for being a member!
The link for the Omni since tip store is in the description of the original video
Very informative thank you!! I’m starting to use a long cane after only carrying an ID cane for a little awhile. It can be overwhelming at first because of all the options. Glad I found your channel.
Glad to hear it
the Dakota disc was the most surprising cane tip I've ever seen!
Hi Sam, I'm always excited to learn more about the white cane. :) My go-to was recommended to me by the o and m specialist after I let them know I live in a rural area and don't always have sidewalks to walk on. Yes, everyone affectionately refers to that tip as the UFO tip, LOL!
I hadn't heard of the omnisense and now yours and Molly Burke's video featured the tip. I still really like my high-mileage marshmallow tip
I’d recommend watching the original Omni sense video for more information. I also did a #ShortShowingMyselfUsingTheOmniSenseToSkateboard
Thank you so much for your video, I have just received a mobility cane from the eye unit where I have been receiving diabetic eye treatment and your videos are very helpful and just interesting, God bless and thanks again joe
Wow I just didn't know there were multiple tips on a cane. Very fascinating!
Super helpful video and great timing for me as I'm adjusting to my first white cane and am a manual wheelchair user. I'm going to get to try out the wheelbarrow style one at my next O&M appointment as we try to settle in what will work best for me for some wheeling use and some just investigating. I'm definitely an unusual use case so maybe the unusual tip will work well 😊
I wish you luck!
Hi Sam,
I just wanted to say, great job! I use the rolling ball tip, and I really like it.
Abby
I have impaired hand mobility and found with the marshmallow tip that it did indeed get stuck in crannies (not grannies) a fair bit, so I tried a ball tip and I liked the roll but it also made my cane rather heavy at the tip. I plan to try the sandpaper thing cuz tif that works for me, that would be sublime!
You got me when you show the Rolling Wheel Tip at 9:09 XD Nice one!
Hey, there's a really awesome tip for Ambutech canes. It's ceramic and I love it. It has become my dayly driver. I was hoping to see someone else's thoughts on it!

Your daily driver omni tip seems to be the culmination of all of the other ones , an awesome innovation. Thanks for sharing 👍
Yes, it’s pretty cool. However, it’s not perfect so if you are considering it, I definitely recommend watching my other videos on it.
Nice video on cane tips. I've been an O&M for 21 years. Like your demonstration of being in-step and in- rhythm when you're walking. Have you tried the Dakota disk for rough terrain made of natural materials? Take care.

Are used to have a ceramic tip on an old telescopic cane, however, it broke and a got rid of it.
I have the Rolling ball one❤ love It ❤ heavy but fab❤
Great video, very informative. I was not aware there were different tips for my cane.
Thanks for the uh... tip! 😁
Thank you for the video, which tip would you recommend for walking on the beach?

I should just try out those more out there types of cane tips just for fun. The cane tip that looks like a top I joking call “The UFO” tip.
🤣 I agree!
My son has that one!!!! We have had the marshmallow tip, the sphere and now the UFO! Haha
Oh and interestingly, My son also loves tops!!!!! He's high-functioning autistic, and when he was little, he loved to spin everything on its axis!!!
Yes, I’ve seen the UFO but have never used it. I might need to add that to my collection!
thank you Sam!
Hi Sam I have usher syndrome myself I use my cane for my disability balance just wonder it white rolling ball on your cane is heavier than omins red wheels sam I needed your adivce tks hope y have a great day
Thanks!
Hi Great video.
I use a teardrop tip on the end of my cane you forgot to mention it in the video
I didn’t necessarily forget to mention the tip, I was mainly demonstrating the tips that I have. There are actually several tips that I didn’t mention in the video, Dakota disc, ceramic tip, etc.
Just the tip? xD
Great videos as always, your reviews rules man.
Thanks this video help me a lots😍😍
8:24 It seems nice 👍
Have you seen the LED canes? Such a great idea!!
Absolutely! I was one of the first to make a video for the cane
This is great information! What kind of canes do these tips fit on? I use a graphite revolution with a marshmallow roller but not all tips are compatible with certain tips. I’m curious about the Omni tip because I walk a lot over various terrain.
I’m not sure if there are certain canes that these tips are compatible with. All I know is that they come in hook and slip on styles.
Can you give the website door the Omni sense tip?
It might work OK in the weeds. Parenthetically, years ago this was called a Bandoo basher. This is made mostly for the weeds but frankly if you’re having that kind of trouble.
Are there any different tips for Support canes?
What is the web site fir the wheel tip for the cane,it has two wheels an can be slipped on the cane?
Are you familiar with the white cane for children that straps around the waist and who manufactured it.

Mr. Blind Life: My Last pencil cane tip got broken in Europe.
Viewers: How about the ALL TERRAIN TIP?
Hi just wonder what sizes of wheel of omni wheels is it with u now still study about this tip tks hope y have a great day it small wheels right
At the beginning of the video Sam is holding all the tips and the wheels on the omnisense seem to have the same diameter as the rollerball
Check out the original Omni sense video. In that video I do a very thorough comparison between it and the rolling ball tip. I also describe the tip and talk about the size and weight.
Where can I buy a ball tip abd where can I buy that wheel tip? I’m looking to swap out my old one for a new one but having trouble finding it online
Hi! Do you know what kind of polymer are used to make the tips?? I saw somewhere that they're made of graphite, is that true?
Some certain tips are made out of graphite. Most are some type of plastic, although I’m not sure what type. Some tips are even made out of ceramic and metal.
5:00 How can you get those cane tips?
Sam, how does the Omni sense go with moving up and down stairs? Can you use it the same way as a marshmallow?
Pretty much, although it’s a heavier tip so it’s not exactly the same.
Can you please tell me where I can get the metal glide tip for my cane? It looks like the one on MaxiAids only works with a .5 inch and not blind cane.
The image you put up in this video also looks like the tip is wider than the sleeve, and I have yet to find anything else that matches it. Please help.
I got mine from NFB (National Federation of the Blind). I would try there or Ambutech.
Can someone post where to get that “rolling wheel tip” that he talks about st the end cause I’m looking online and I can’t find it
Metal glide Tip is miss named.
How do you remove a black gliding tip
Way cool Sam
Sorry, the comment about Vandhu basher was about all-terrain tip. Not good with two point touch. I tried it on the beach in Corpus Christi and really didn’t find it useful at all. If you’re in the high weeds, again, Dakota disc is better.
I love ur videos
Anyone know where I can purchase a light weight carbon fiber collapsible white cane with a metal glide tip
I purchased a cane from maxiaids sometime back but it’s a heavy collapsible cane with a long white round tip and it hurts my wrist with long distance walks
Size i could get
I make my own tips. It's easy.
Hi Sam I have usher syndrome I use my cane for my disability balance just wonder your white rolling ball on your cane is more heavy than omins wheels what your name brand of your while rolling ball tip on your cane Sam just wonder hope u have a great day
The Omni cents tip is just a little bit heavier than a rolling ball tip
Have you seen the cane that is illuminated at night using LEDs so the cane is definitely more visible at night
Absolutely, I was one of the first to make a video about it
What do you mean using a cane as identification
There’s a type of cane that is specifically used for identification. It tends to be smaller and more thin than the canes used for navigation. They are often just called ID canes. So someone that has low vision and might not need a cane for navigation, can Carrie and I D cane so that people around them will know that they may need help
Some people dont need the cane to get around, but they want the public to know that they are visually impaired, so might need a little extra help
So I'm sighted and I don't wanna sound dismissive of your capabilities but how do you drive? My intuition says that wouldn't be safe, but my knowledge on how the visually impaired navigate through the world is intensely patchy.
Blind people dont drive!
He most likely doesn't drive himself, but as a passenger you still forget stuff in cars.
I bought the all terrain tip and it was a huge disappointment.
Wheel tips are for show & nothing more!!
🦯+🕶=Me
Can’t stand metal glide tips. They just don’t hold up well
...
Your car? You can drive?;
Not exactly. It’s my car but the wife drives.
Wrong!!! The pencil tip is good for the mobility cane if it's used the right way!!
Stop lieing!! The weel tip is only able to go forward & backwards & nothing more!!
Is you blind ?
I’m not totally blind but I am legally blind. I don’t have any central vision. By the way, I loved watching your movies back in the 80s! Up in smoke is hilarious!
@@theblindlife hell yea brother stay lifted 😌 💨
Remember that this person is not a specialist therefore whatever he says is stupid!!
