Self-Publishing: on Amazon vs IngramSpark

  • Unboxing of my self-published book: one from Amazon.com and one from IngramSpark (Lightning Source). I compare the cost, speed, quality, and distribution advantage of both.
BIG discovery: apparently Amazon automatically uses premium color when printing a color book. IngramSpark gives you the choice of standard or premium. No wonder my Amazon book looks more vivid on the inside! I just checked what my price would be on IngramSpark if I used premium color, and I would have to PAY people $3 to buy my book. So. I'm using a muted, dusty color on the Ingram publication. C'est la vie.
A couple more discoveries: 1) matte lamination is more expensive than gloss. I did indeed order the matte lamination on the Ingram books, and I LOVE it. 2) I didn't realize copies were selling on IngramSpark as well as Amazon. First ten days: 12 copies on Amazon, 4 copies on Ingram. That's with no paid promotion on my part.

I kinda like that dusty look of the color pages with IS. Looks a bit classy. Sometimes I think glossy color looks a bit "magaziney". Are the IS color images crisp?

I too love the cover of Ingramspark. But the inside images are too dusty. I could have picked the better color printing, but cost would increase by about $5 per book. Not an option. Anyway, overall I prefer the IS printing (lightingsource).

I just ordered a proof of my art book on KDP and the paper on the inside was not glossy or coated. I chose the highest quality too. I just don't see that my customers would be happy with the quality.

Sounds like it's time for a second opinion. Try Ingram Spark

I have the impression that the second package edition is more careful.
On the back cover the production used a typeface color in harmony with art.
The finishing application is better in the second package, it is more durable than the first, which in time loses the effect.

Here's the curious thing: Amazon is now displaying the second back cover (not the one created through their cover creator). Does that mean they picked up distribution from Ingramspark after all?

I found it best to publish both KDP and Ingram Spark.

Hey, I hope you see this comment, I’m going to publish my first book, an origami tutorial book which full of pictures, 4 years in making, I kinda a bit frustrated with the costly and slim profit of self publishing, do you suggest me to publish online first and give up sell on physical bookstore which has a big wholesale percentage cut from my profit, and which print service would you suggest, should I go with premium or standard color?
Can I print by ingramspark and set the wholesale to 30% and distribute it amazon so I can get cheaper than the amazon 40%?

Good questions. I discovered that premium color was way too expensive and not necessary. I would go with standard color and price your book so you can offer at least 45% discount to distributors. I make a little more that $1 per book either thru Ingram or Amazon. If you sell thru both, be sure to have the same price. That means you have to know the cost on each platform before you decide on a price.
      And congratulations!
Use every social network you can to promote it!

DIYMarta thanks! Do you think hardcover is necessary too? I’m not sure but as you can see including you, color print is kinda not consident and I thought to use premium color to reduce defection and higher satisfaction quality too.
I’m so tired(I’m sorry but things are not so smooth recently) and thought to just use traditional publisher and done, but my book is 158 page and only 1 page b&w so the print cost won’t reduce much I think, hmmm

@@NetvoTV It is an exhausting process. The thing about color printing is that you pay for the whole book as color even if you only have one letter in color. The other thing is that you want to sell books. But if premium color makes it unaffordable, you won't make sales. I bet you first started this project because you wanted to help people learn origami. It won't help anyone e if they can't afford the book. Look at similar books and how they're priced. You have to price yours similarly.

DIYMarta yeah make sense, sorry for late reply, btw, so based on your video, KDP use premium ink? Where’s KDP color print quality fit in compare to ingramspark standard and premium ink? I used the calculator, I can earn $3 with KDP and earn negative if I set 40% on ingramspark, print cost is 11.91 for KDP, 15.77 for IS premium, 9.3 for IS std, so how can people say it’s cheaper on ingramspark to print color if KDP use premium ink cheaper than IS premium?

    • @Diypics
      @Diypics  4 года назад

@@NetvoTV I suppose it's only cheaper on Ingram because you have the option of standard color. What I did was punch up the intensity on the Ingram spark colors and toned down colors for the Amazon file.
Quite the brain strain working all of this out, isn't it.
