Growing up as a young black boy in the 60's, I was berated by my peers for listening to that "white music". But I didn't give a damn. I listened to The Association, The Beatles, The Who, The Stones, The Zombies, and all the rest with great appreciation. I'm glad to see that you two aren't afraid to listen to and appreciate ALL music.
As a Latino and growing up surrounded by every ethnic group as a child. I thank God I never had to go through that. I too am a child of the 60's. And I have to say we lived through the greatest collection of singer/songwriters, music composers, lyricist and various musical genres that came out of the 60's like: Heavy Metal Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Folk Rock, Punk Rock, Soft Rock, the British Invasion. The birth of the Motown Sound and the Sound of Philadelphia's R&B/Soul groups and single acts. And Blue Eye Soul. We were blessed to have been witness to this music. Dennis Flury said it best-"These songs were my youth, now they are my fondest memories."
White guy that grew up on this "white" music, but also loves blues, soul, R&B and Motown, country, western, classical, big band and more. Great music doesn't see color.
@@bodiespizza Agree!
I was working at Pep Boys many years ago and there was this black man who always came in wearing a Philadelphia Flyers jersey and people would remark about it or give him dirty/weird looks which he would just shrug his shoulders and laugh I laughed with him. Great guy and believe me he loved ice hockey and the Philadelphia Flyers!!
So never ever let someone try to make you feel bad or awkward because they can't handle it. Good for you Roger good for you.
That was me, too. I listened to whatever sounded good to me. Categories be damned.
This was one of the greatest 60's band ever. They had hits like "Cherish" (1966). Never My Love (1967). Windy (1967) Along Come Mary (1967). The Time It Is Today (1968). Everything That Touches You (1968). Time For Livin' (1968). It is worth it going down the Rabbitt Hole that is the "Association." Great response on one of the greatest groups ever. And on one of the best love songs ever too.
They didn't play an instrument. Everything was done by The Wrecking Crew (Session musicians)
Yaaaazzzzz cherish is the word I use to descriiiiiiiiibe…………..
@@hipguide1 Heard them live and can vouch that they were excellent instrumentalists themselves. The recordings used the Wrecking Crew but they held their own in love performance. Terry K played many instruments. Larry Ramos was with the New Christy Minstrels and played both banjo and guitar for them. Not sure if both of the Yesters were guitarist (senior moment on my part).
@@stanbannmusic8334 Great info and back story. Greatly appreciated.
@@54nomore Thanks! You're very welcome!
I'm 68 and I don't mind getting up there in years, because I got to listen to all this music when I was a kid and it was first released. It was so great waiting for the latest Beatles album to be released and hearing all those songs when they were brand new.
You might as well have read my mind with that thoughtful comment.
I'm 70 so I'm right there with ya. We got to hear all the great music when it was hot off the press!
71 here .... Some of the best Make-Out Songs and Slow Dancing songs at the School Dances on Friday Night!
I'm 67. I would never change those wonderful years for anything. I count my blessings every day.
69 here... and agree 100%. Dennis Flury said it best-"These songs were my youth, now they are my fondest memories."
I was 17 when the song came out. I met my husband when I was 23. We had gone camping and we were sitting on the tailgate of his truck feeling the warm of the fire watching the stars. My husband was 21 and it was 1973. He loved to play his radio on blast when ever we were outdoors. This song came on and he took my hand and just stared into my eyes for the whole song. When it was over he said that was our song and he told me he loved me. We were married that year. 3 sons, 11 grandchildren and 5 greatgrands. My husband pasted this past year but before he did we were sitting togeather listening to music and our song came on. He took my hand and with tears in our eyes we both listened. When it was over I said do you remember and he remembered ❤️ My husband passed a few days later.
I've watched so many reactors that react to this genre of music that grew up with. They all say they were born in the wrong era. We had the greatest music. Thank you both for bringing back the great memories of my youth ❤
THE ASSOCIATION had amazing harmony abilities. Some of their other hits, Cherish, Windy, Along Comes Mary (which is a song about pot) to name a few
All classics, they were a sound unto themselves - and don't forget Everything That Touches You - the outro gives me chills, the voices like Roman trumpets announcing the Second Coming - their grouped harmonies were always awesome
Amen. All excellent songs.
Windy isn't about a girl... It was about a drug dealer! 😂
@@classicstepvans7586 hard to picture that scenario
Oh my gosh, you guys have playing a lot of great 60's music recently and they bring so many memories for me. I am 70 years old and when I hear this music, I am 16 again. Thank you both!
Me, too! 😂 I'm back in my socks dancing in the gym in Friday Sock Hop! 😅 Loved it! ❤
These songs were my youth, now they are the fondest of memories.
If your in the right mood, Association hard to beat.
Here is a little-known information most do not know ...A trio of show biz giants (Milton Berle, Jimmy Durante and Bing Crosby) introduced The Association on the 9/5/67 episode of TV's Hollywood Palace show. Just a little trivia on and where this song "Never My Love" was performed.
Larry Ramos is a Filipino American seen here playing guitar who sang lead on this song. He was the First Asian Filipino American to win a Grammy Award back in 1963 with the group "The New Christy Minstrels." He was born and raised in Hawaii. He would later join 'The Association' as one of their band members and would sing lead and played banjo and lead guitar in many of their songs. He passed away back in 2014. Rest in Peace Mr. Larry Ramos.
Larry was a hero to the Asian community, and the Filipino community in particular. Immensely talented both as an instrumentalist and a singer.
@@TheOriginalRick Thank you for your thoughtful comments on an immensely talented man. He was a great influence in the Asian American community.
@@54nomore Mrs. Rick is an Illocano Filipina like Larry's family. In our 49 years together I've certainly grown to appreciate her heritage and culture.
@@TheOriginalRick How lucky you are to have found a lifetime partner. Filipinas are mostly traditional woman who accept the role of domesticity. This is why many American men are looking for love elsewhere. They have found Asian women are very traditional. And they find no problem with catering and loving their men unconditionally. 49 years is a lifetime. I myself have been happily married now for 45 years and counting. All the best to you and Mrs. Rick.
You are very welcome.
The way you two were floating to "Never My Love" was exactly the way we floated to it in the 1960s.
I am 65, and I grew up on the songs of the 60's & ,70's. Those were the best times for music.
RIP, Terry Kirkman, and thank you for giving us this song back in the 60's. Still holds up!
Cherish is another great love song by the Association with their great harmonies. It’s a must.
Please do Windy and Cherish also by Association. You'll love both of them!
I don't think that I've heard this song SINCE 1967. It was a gem. We loved it. Thanks. ❤
You have to be kidding. This song was played on any oldie station.
The Association created music that floated through the air. You could almost breath it in while listening. The harmonies were on point!!!
My Mom RIP played this song when I was a kid… 🙏 For reacting to this track, a beautiful back drop of my childhood. ✌️😎
Hey OG Mike, RIP to your Mom who gave you a childhood to remember ❤
"When the music was good."-Mel. I agree with you Mel. I consider the music of the 1960's as the Greatest Decade in Rock & Roll History. In every Genre of Rock & Roll music such as: Hard Rock, Folk Rock, Heavy Metal Rock, Punk Rock, Easy Listening Rock, Rythm and Blues Rock, Soul Rock, Symphony Rock, and Blue Eye Soul Rock. The decade had the greatest collection of composers, Lyricist, Musicians and Singer/Songwriters. Great reaction to one of the greatest 60's groups of all time...The Association.
I was only a child hearing The Association and it brings back those memories.
Me too...
I always liked this song. Beautiful, just beautiful.
What a great band they were.
Utterly timeless ~ ❤❤❤
I'm 65 and grew up listening to this music. It was a time when music was pure and it had the ability to literally draw you in so that you actually felt what was being conveyed. It a0lso gave one the time to digest the lyrics.
Music HAS changed drastically. That is why I gravitate to the songs from before and to reactors like you. Thank you!
We were lucky, we had Motown, love songs, rock, we liked it all.
Growing up with this music keeps dweeled in us today
Your love lights up the songs you review for all of us to enjoy. Peace of Christ.
Wow, thank you so much Davis❤
more Association, songs “Along comes Mary”, “Windy”, “Cherish”,
If you loved this song from The Association you will really love their song "Cherish". The harmony from all six members is incredible.
You guy should know these were part of the baby boomer generation! After the war end men coming home to find love. Music was all about LOVE! Babies were born every years from the 50's to 60's
We needed this music to balance the protest music of the day. This was during the civil rights battles & the Vietnam war was raging & this was an escape. I saw these guys in 1968, when I was 15. They had some great music. My brother was in Vietnam & said the guys loves this music because it reminded them of 'normal life'.
Thank you for recognizing how much music has declined. I grew up in Motown in the ‘60s and ‘70s and I literally cry now at how much we have lost, and not just in terms of music. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to enjoy every minute - because one day it won’t be so good. Also, the romantic songs of the ‘40s were special too. Although at the time I didn’t appreciate having to listen to my parent’s music, they understood romance and true love- and long-term commitment.
A CLASSIC ! I’ve been married 53 years and I can attest to this ! Never my love ! They have another awesome song called cherish that you would love
Songs like this is why I love music from the 60's and 70's.
If only I could go back and listen for the first time again.
Mel, knowing your love for songs where a man conveys his deep undying love for a woman made this song a no-brainer. As a working musician since 1974, I can tell you this is one of the most popular songs to perform at a wedding. It's message is crystal clear, the harmonies shimmer and the music bed is , as you so perfectly observed , hypnotic. tranquility. Note drummer Ted Bluechel Jr's tasteful use of brushes instead of sticks, Windy is another great song. Pure Pop confection and one of the catchiest songs of All Time. Cheers, RNB
The Association played at my high school senior prom in 1968!!! Great memories!!!💜💜💜🎶🎼🎵🥁🎸🎹🎤🎙🎧
Loved this song when it came out and it still holds up after all these years. 👍❤🤙
This song came out during my first crush, she is long gone as a crush but still love the song!
You can't imagine what it was like waking up every morning, turning on your raido and listening to new songs by groups like this, the lemon pipers, the rolling stones, the beatles, it was the greatest time in music history. Pairing up with your buddies in school to start yet another garage band and learn the latest songs, getting together to hash out the lyrics and instrumentation, watching the latest bands on Ed Sullivan, the Dick Clark Sow, Hullabaloo it was an incredible time to be a kid. Seeing bands like this in person, the dave clark five, The Doors, Paul Revere and the Raiders, it was something that can never be repeated.
I loved the show "Where the Action Is". The Raiders were great, loved Mark Lindsey.
You are so right, I grew up with these songs and took them for granted until I hear whats playing today. The 60s 70s and 80s has the best music ever made.
Agree 100%,
The Association had so many hits and amazing songs in the 60's! (Check out "Cherish" next). The dude playing the black guitar is Larry Ramos, a native Hawaiian, an amazing guitar player and vocalist.
Saw them in maybe 1971 in a small college gym. Can still hear their vocals echoing around that room. Still one of my favorite concerts and have been to dozens.
Why can't we have music like this again 😭
This would make a great first dance song at a wedding.
You guys get this era.
A very unique sound. Great little outfit. Love these guys.
Thanks for listening
Great song. You managed once again to go back to childhood. I grew up in an awesome time. This would be a great first dance for a bride and groom.
True blast from the past. These guys were amazing the way they could harmonize and play together. You will dig doing a deep dive on them.
This is one of the songs I grew up with. I know guys who played this song at their weddings, and you can understand why.
Yes! Yes! The love man! I was a kid in the 60s and there was romantic love and also fellow human love! I shared the music with our kids and they share their's with me! We all acknowledge the nostalgia of eras past.
😽💋🎶
It was truly a different world back then.
Excellent description. It is “timeless” beautiful music.
There’s often animosity and lack of harmony between generations - some of it understandably so - but it is really great that you two do your utmost to bridge the gap.
I had the pleasure of seeing The Association live, in Southern California in the late 60s. You're right; it was magical. Thanks for the memories.
60s music are simply the best
I love this song always smile
one of my favorite songs of all time…love the association!
My husband isn’t a very good singer but he tried, when we were 12 he sang this to me and then he proposed, I said yes, we got married when we were 18 and next month we’ll be celebrating 46 years together
I absolutely Positively love this song!!!!! Thank you guys for reacting to this beautiful song! You guys ROCK!!
One of the greatest most beautiful songs ever. Cherish, Windy and Along Comes Mary are very good also.Unfortunately this great group is nearly forgotten, thanks for keeping their music alive.
Not only was our music better we truly had friends of all colors and religions. This day everyone and everything is so insincere. It’s difficult for us in our 60s to think this is the world now. I’m so sad for the generations after us 💔
This is one of those old songs I never get sick of...love it
Gary Puckett and the Union Gap . Lady Willpower you'll love . One of the best voice's of the 60s
Music is always evolving however not always for the better. You two are just a couple of old souls!!! Thanks for the walk down memory lane! Love from Texas🤠🤠🤠
When listening to the group top of. All time three of top ten most listen groups great music
Before my time. BUT when I got older and heard it , I too loved this one!💖💙🙂
The Association is a great pop band from the 1960's. My husband's first album that he ever bought was this group. They had a lot of great hits such as "Windy", "Cherish", “Everything That Touches You”, “Time For Livin'”, “The Time It Is Today”, “Enter The Young”, “No Fair At All”, "Requiem For The Masses" etc.
Such great songs, though I hadn't thought I'd see anyone else wanting a reaction to "Requiem for the Masses" :) We need more Association reactions :D
SIMPLE YET ICONIC😊 RIGHT! TIMELESS😊 ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG EVER WRITTEN😊
You two are the BEST!!!!!!! Such love in the room and you give off such beautiful vibes. Perfect reaction.
Yep, I was a kid in the 60’s, and my father loved music, all kinds, soul, blues, jazz , pop, and he had a big collection of albums and 45’s, and he would let me listen to his 45’s all the time, and I remember he had this classic. We were black of course, but I quickly learned the people black and white made soulful songs like this, and I loved them all. I still have a small collection of his 45s. So fortunate and blessed to be a kid in the 60’s, a teen in the 70’s, and in my 20’s in the 80’s , and experience the best era of music with so many talented artists who sang beautiful love sings like this.
I was born in the '50s and yes the music we grew up on back then was so good. It's a little hard to deal with some of the music now, but I'm glad you did this song and I'm also glad you enjoyed it❤
The first love song that I related to. I was 15 in 1967 "The Summer of Love". Although I now realize it was just teenage hormones 🤣🤣 He was country & I'm rock. It would have never worked out. But I will never forget how wonderful it was.
This is real music, such harmony with this group. It was heaven growing up with these groups and songs.
When my future wife and I were dating in 1967 this was one of our songs. Just beautiful.
By the 90's , People Closed their Minds ............. Great Music back in The Day 👍👌💞✌️💖🙏
Since you liked this so much, you would also love their "Cherish" and "Everything That Touches You". They had other hits but these two have this sound that you like so much.
Takes me back to my childhood in Pasadena TX just before we moved to Oakland CA. Fun times, going to the skating rink every Saturday night, a simpler time without all the drama and insanity of today. Thanks for reacting to it!
I was born in 48 and took the great music for granted, I thought it would last foever, sadly I was wrong.
This song came out a couple years after I was born so I can honestly say I've been listening to this song my entire life so far and it never losses it's appeal.
Wonderful band,so much great music
You guys hit it on the nose. The 60’s were all about love. It was very cool. I was 4 when this song came out. Love you guys. ❤
i LIKED THIS SONG BACK THEN, BUT i APPRECIATE IT SO MUCH MORE NOW. Thanks
Shawn & Mel, you are beautiful people
This is like a magically written and choreographed love song, really magical that shows you the power of the sound of lyrics that are worth hearing.
This group had many great recordings. This is one song you need to listen to with your special one. I never get tired of hearing them. Try "Enter The Young".
I just witnessed the ultimate 60's love song meets the ultimate music reaction team. It did not disappoint.
SOOOOOO TRUE....BRING BACK THIS MUSIC !!!!
One of my faves! Makes me want to cry it's so beautiful! It was wonderful growing up with this music. Magical, heavenly! I really feel sorry for babies born into this day and age. Raised in a world of technology and hateful music. I'm so glad I was born when I was! Life was beautiful ❤
I love this, and these beautiful people.
Next reaction should be "Along Comes Mary," by The Association. A Real Banger!!!
1970. Sitting with my arm around my first girlfriend looking out at the river. It was a simple and beautiful time
I haven't heard this song in ages! One of my favorites went it came out. Loved their harmonies. A couple of other favorites by them were Windy and Cherish, though they had several other great songs.
Everything they sing is magical and timeless, one of my most favorite groups.
The summer of 1967. I was a little boy, and remember this song vividly. Our family lived on an Armed Forces Base (Canada) and my babysitters would always bring over their 45s to play on my Dad’s hifi. So I was constantly introduced to great tracks such as this. Being a kid in the 1960s was a very special time. I enjoyed it immensely. Everything to me (back then) seemed so meaningful. Has it been 57 years ago already?
Great track. Amazing harmonies and well this is a timeless classic. Thanks for sharing. I loved 🥰 your reactions.
Another gorgeous song from my youth. Thanks for playing it. I like current music, some of it, but I still enjoy the music from the 60s and 70s. Now it's all in my iTunes! And young people like you are listening to it! Love you guys. No complaints.
It's a crime how under promoted, under appreciated, and overlooked this band was. It was essential listening on a date when in High School.
One of the most beautiful greatest songs ever. Definitely a timeless song!🎉🎉🎉
When I was in high school I got to see them 2x in concert in Indianapolis - LOVE them!
LOVE the Association!!! Have Three of their CD's They were AMAZING!!!!! Thanks for answering my request!!!!
The Wrecking Crew played the instrumentals on every one of their records!
No, they didn't. Many, maybe most. Not all.
