Man, I don't own a Grandmother, but I find this series on it so inspiring and full of beautiful sounds. The videos are great, with so much thought behind them, and everything is really clear and inspirational. Thank you and cheers!
The Moog grandmother just sounds “right” And to be honest I’ve owned the Voyager and little phatty, hated them both. I had a Moog prodigy in 2004 that I ended up selling when it tripled in price but I always regretted it, especially every time I played one of the new Moogs, they just didn’t have the sauce but after playing around with the Grandmother for a few hours the other day...the Moog grandmother just has it. It’s feature set is painfully limited but it has that sound, I can’t explain it but it’s there and I haven’t heard that from any new Moog until this one.
I love the soaring atmospherics & lonesome wind effects achieved with these two Moog beasties. I'll try to get the same effects with my Moog Grandmother & humble Vox DelayLab pedal here...
The Moogerfooger sounds fantastic. You said the chips are starting to give, making it sound dirtier. I *love* the sound of the dirty delay and haven't found anything like that in a VST so far. Shame that these delays have been discontinued, because it would be the only physical delay pedal in the world that I could justify buying as a DAW musician.
I have a 104z and it's one of the best delay's I have ever heard. THe problem is that I had to send it back to Moog like three different times because it keeps blowing an output resistor. It won't self-oscillate sometimes or it won't even delay. Sometimes the daughter board will short out on the chassis and it's impossible to tell when or how to remedy it. I think the discontinuation had less to do with the availability of the chips and more to do with the design.
@@InfiniteRhombus Currently, there's one selling on reverb for $1200 with free shipping. From this and your comment, I conclude that at the current exchange rate, 1 FD (one fucking dollar) = $0.30 USD.
@@RadicalCaveman you should look into it a bit more deeply that way you can figure out how much money your mom has been pocketing from blowing everyone
If the Moog delay is similar to other BBD delay designs, the dirtiness you mention is likely just a calibration issue. There are trimpots inside to adjust the operating parameters of the BBD chips and get them to work properly. If some component values drift over time, recalibrating it could bring the fidelity back up. Typically that can only be done with a scope and a good amount of expertise. Trying to adjust them by ear is a recipe for disaster. Longer delay times tend to be noisier too. I had an old DOD FX-90 delay that had an internal pot to adjust the maximum delay time. You could set it way outside normal operating ranges - think 750ms on a pedal designed for about 350ms max. At that long delay time, it basically became a SUPER lo-fi looper - really cool party trick kinda thing.
I'd get a new Matriarch instead of wrestling with recalibrating old gear etc. The new Matriarch firmware & calibrations are easy to download, or it's already upgraded right out of the box when shipped. Plus the Matriarch has essentially the Moogerfooger delay onboard, along with 4-voice paraphony, FOUR oscillators, more patch points etc.
Question: I have the Grandmother and a Strymon Big Sky. I would love to try a few more pedals like this one. Also, would it be recommended to add a Strymon power source to hook them all up to just for the power? Or is that a waste?
Just beautiful :-) One question: Do I hear stereo in this video? I too have a mf-104m but since it is only mono I dont get stereo with my ob6. What is your setup outside the view of the video? Anyway; Your videos are very inspiring too me :-)
I'm thinking one could pretty much do all this on a Moog Matriarch with its onboard delay & effects that seem to incorporate the classic Moogerfooger Delay. Plus Matriarch has paraphonic options, expanded patch points & FOUR oscillators. I'll be trading up my Moog Grandmother for a Matriarch soon. Great video & performance, by the way.
@@stolencoats63 yeah but that’s aftermarket and overpriced. I mean, if you have the funds go with the Matriarch, or get them both 😅 Was just saying the two aren’t really equivalent. Pay double the price and get double the synth 🤷🏻♂️
One issue is that the Grandmother has a lovely spring reverb which, sadly and strangely, the Matriarch lacks. If you want delay AND reverb, the Matriarch by itself won't do it.
The Grandmother seems like great fun and I would buy one if it weren't for that ridiculous excuse for a Keyboard. I look at it and think why bother? It would seem that Moogerfoogers were designed to be patched with Moog Modular units and the Grandmother was designed to be patched with Eurorack Modules. However, I see no reason why you couldn't make connections between the patch points of the Grandmother and the CV inputs of Moogerfoogers. I never understood why Moog didn't include a patch point for the LFO output of the MF-104M and the MF-108M. Such a cool multi-waveform feature they don't allow you to break it out for utilization with other devices? I mean, hello Moog!!
@@ulrikandreassen3923 Looking at both units it would seem to me that if they had moved the Midi In off to the Right just under the Power In they would have the space for one more Quarter-inch plug for the LFO Out.
I'm not trying to be hypercritical. But I like to be able to clearly see the settings on the synths, patches etc. The lighting seems more for affect than to demonstrate the instrument. I'm here to see the instrument. I want to see it. I don't like the shadows. I liked the cleaner look better. Just a subscribers opinion, not a criticism.

Once upon a synth! I hope Moog hooks you up with future gear. You know your stuff. Thank you for all the great lessons and sessions!
Nice play around, really like the look and sound of the Grandmother and the Moogerfoogers I've always had a little soft spot for.
I read the title and I know this is already like caviar and champagne :)
Yup, we're like pigs in chardonnay.

@D D Day esq You bought a Grandmother AND a Matriarch?
you invented the Matriarch! love the video. beautiful demo, lovely playing, sweet sounds.
This is even better than watching Netflix... I enjoyed this!
Amazing sounds. Great Job at showing why Moogs are so special!
This synth sounds great, so does the delay!
Very nice and peacefull, love it!
I can hear that everyday, its so Harmony and warm 🎹🎧🔊🤩

Sounds so freaking good. I will NEVER EVER in a million years get rid of my MF-104M.
Not even for One Millllllion Dollars?
Now I have the cash to buy one... they no longer make them :(
Just what every monosynth needs, sounds great!

Congrats on the 104M! Those can be hard to come by. I've got the smaller MF Delay that does a good job but I'd love to have the full 104.
awesome demo

Clicked on the link to hear crazy CV modulations from Grandma into the delay, and well... That was gorgeous, but less surprising than I thought.
Yeah, I totally somehow forgot to use the CV jacks in this vid lol, maybe next time.
You just made a new fan of your page :) been watching all your vids on the grandmother, makes me want to own one so bad.. keep it up man
great job with this. you made some really great stuff.....i think you sold me on this synth
Beautiful. As always
Such a shame these are discontinued. Still sounds great imo.
this viddy is one the best things online ;)
Aaand now I want a Moog Grandmother with Moogerfooger.
It's pretty insane that the pedal costs twice as much as the synth ;-)
Your videos are always a light super inspiration,
I lean sooo much thank you keep them coming all day I’m a fan for sure🙂

Really cool. Do you make movie soundtracks? Because this sounds like a movie soundtrack.
Thanks! I don't, but that's always been a dream of mine, so I hope to one day do that.
7:40 is amazing
This is actually all I need
Great video I have to grandmother and was wondering if you can do a video with the moog cp 251 and the grandmother
Ugh. I wish these delays were still available. Last one I saw locally the seller wanted $1500 for it!
so nice, thank you
Really nice ... especially @12:00 and after...
Love it. For those of us who can't get our hands on a MF, what would you recommend that gets us close?
You can find an echoplex in the 400 dollar range if you look.
The Minifooger delay (I've a MKI) is really nice sounding. Should be able to find one for about £150.
Hi! I also have a GM and a MF-104M. I tried to sync the clock via Midi, cant get it to work. Have you tried it? thx fpr your reply 🙏

no cv control over the fooger! what a shame, would of been cool to see some sequencing of time of feedback
Yeah you're right, I should have explored some CV controls. Maybe next time.
I love my Mother 32 but I can't get these snappy lead sounds with it. Oh I'd they had only put a true ADSR into the M32.
I heard the Pink Floyd Reference too.
beautiful
Really enjoying this video series!
Quick question: do you still own and use the Behringer Deep Mind, or did you sell it to purchase the Grandmother?
Thanks! I did sell the DM, but not to buy the GM. I sold it about a year ago when I moved. The GM is a fairly recent purchase.
Very cool! Have you ever tinkered around with the Arturia Matrixbrute?
Robert Simpson I have not, but it would be cool to try.
My next studio upgrade will be to a new Matriarch and a DeepMind 12 here. Selling my Grandmother soon. Thoughts?
@@Randeema Personally, I still think the deep mind as one of the best bang for the buck synths out there! I don’t think you will be disappointed!

@@RadicalCaveman That was not my question ;-)
What do you mean that you think some of your "BBD chips are starting to give"? Is that bad? Which piece of gear is causing that?

Dose it have a headphone jack?
Not a separate one, but the main out doubles as a headphone out.

It's two contact points, two wires and a quarter-inch jack plug.
Possibly a buffer.. How hard could it be?
The ring mod has LFO out, and it's the cheapest one. Also, there's the control processor.

turn up your monitor brightness! it's plenty...
Thanks for the feedback! I recently got a new set of video lights, so I'm still trying to calibrate and get used to them. Cheers.
Nah it’s fine. It’s artistic and lit for mood, not clinical demonstration on settings. Besides, find your own settings, forge your own path.
