    Great video. Please make a video on the 3408, 3412 and maybe even the 3508. Specifically WHY these engines have off-set rod journals on their crackshalfs. Thanks!

    • @electric7487
      @electric7487 3 года назад +2

      The 3508 has offset rod journals because of its crossplane (up-right-left-down) crankshaft and 60° V angle, and what ends up happening is the crankpins have to be split by +60°, -30°, or -120° to get 90° firing intervals. A -30° split was chosen because it has the smallest magnitude and does not require "flying arms" unlike most (4-stroke) 60° V6's.
      However, one problem still remains. The 90° crossplane V8 relies on crankshaft counterweights to achieve perfect primary balance and therefore does not (assuming an up-right-left-down or up-left-right-down crank) require any balance shafts. However, with the 3508 and its 60° V angle, not only did Cat need to add the -30° crankpin split I mentioned before, they also needed to add supplemental counterbalancing because the 3508 has a rocking moment. While Yamaha, on their 60° V8 outboard engines (which is the same crankshaft configuration) use a counter-rotating balance shaft to address this, Caterpillar use unbalanced timing gears instead, so they do not beed to have a shaft running down the block. That's also why the 3508's have an extra timing gear in the front (which is a second balancer gear) whereas the 3512 and 3516 do not have this extra gear.
      The 3512 is even firing with the 60° V angle and non-split crankpins. Nothing really special.
      The 3516, however, does not fire evenly. It is a 60° V16 with non-split crankpins, and what ends up happening is that the enngine fires UNevenly, with firing intervals of 60° from left to right, and intervals of 30° from right to left.

      3406 now called A model, first cylinder blocks from 1 to just under 06000. They oiled rocker arms from the head bolt holes and would put oil in the radiator. Cat did a modification to the spacer plate to stop this.
      Accessory drive air compressor likes to leak oil. You take a 1S9540 dowel if I recall, a letter size U drill bit. Drill into the front hsg and drive and install the dowel. Biggest problems on this series.
      They came PCTA, DIT, DITA. You cannot mix these parts will cause problems. Seen PC pistons put in DI engines and they smoke.
      3406B Cat dropped the DIT and went only to DITA. First engine was a 7FB, used a A model head and it got finally changed in the nozzle chamber area. The front cover was changed and went to New Scroll Fuel System, and to 7000 series nozzles from capsule type. Went from a slide VTU to a hydro-mechanical that is adjustable. Can leak oil around accessory drive.
      Then with 4MG03600 fuel system camshaft and VTU was changed. Also JWAC I think was dropped and went strictly to CAC.
      3406C Emissions is the biggest change I would say. A 3ZJ engine B or C model is the only truck engine that if you go by the parts book you will put the wrong nozzles in it.
      3406C 8PN, is a odd engine and lots of changes, pistons, head, exhaust manifold etc. Again just to meet emissions.
      Starting at 4MG03600 and to 8PN series. Numerous VTU changes as they had problems with carrier slipping, bolts backing out and such.
      Starting in the early 3ZJ, era and other engine prefixes in this time frame the rod journal was increased, also other changes to the connecting rod. You have to get the article as it is a lot to type. Injection pump hsg changed and increased cam journal size.
      The injection pump went from a single helix (early B models) to a dual helix (later B models) and the played with the check valve design. As fuel psi was increased for emissions a lot of fuel lines would break. If you didn't have the proper clamps they failed fairly quickly. Best to use the 8PN set up and I do some changes to it as well.
      Emissions is the biggest so you have several piston compression ration and such, fuel system camshaft for timing and a few engine camshaft designs. Again a lot of typing and not worth it.

    I would like to know more about all the “mechanical” 3406’s (A’s, B’s and C’s). Why are they so popular? Why is there a mechanical C and also a electronic C, but no D? Thanks for your time! I like watching all your videos and learn a lot from them.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  3 года назад +1

      Well the C engines were electronic, but with a mechanical fuel injection pump. A bad compromise in my opinion. I believe they went to the E model to signify Electronic more than a model progression as the engine changed tremendously from the C to the E.

      A b and early C's were very easy to turn up. Last C's were bastard stepchildren because they were kind of mechanical and electronic. I think they skipped d because after the c model they went pure electronic.

      @@rodneyward8357 3406 (now called A model) was a PCT, PCTA, DIT, DITA. (1973-1984) 92U prefix.
      3406B at first was a 7FB, JWAC DITA, later ATAAC was added. As they ran out of serial numbers, the first 4MG's 1-03599 was still basically the same and still could be a JWAC.
      Starting at 4MG03600 the VTU was the major change. And they went into the 90,000 serial numbers. Then they came out with a 5KJ and it was a 3406B, 1-07799. Most people get this serial number mixed up is the 3406 B 3ZJ, serial numbers 1-16181 is a 3406B. During the late 80's the dreaded PEEC was released. Electronic governor and VTU. You had PEEC II, PEEC II.V They started out as a 3406B 8TC. released next of the PEEC was a 2EK, still a 3406B. Last PEEC was the 4CK and it was a 3406B 1-0845. Another 3406B PEEC was a 5YG strictly a 460 HP @1900 RPM'S.
      After the 3406B ended the 3406C was released. Mechanical was 5KJ07800 and up, I have never seen one of these.
      3JZ16182 and up. The last fully mechanical 3406C was the 8PN. It is a totally different engine and parts do NOT inner change well with the older engine. Finally you had the last PEEC, 4CK0846 and up. It was a PEEC III and had a lot of VTU problems.
      That is I recall from memory.

    We had a c175 16 drop 3 valve in one cylinder. Would love to see that on destruction of the week. But I think I would get in trouble if I sent that out.

    Why was the C16 and C18 only in short production and was it true that C16's were notorious for flywheel bolts coming undone?

    IDP offers c17 kits now. C18 liner with a special piston height to wrist pin. To run on a 15.2 liter c15 crank shaft.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  3 года назад

      Blasphemy! I wonder why not just run a C18 at that point instead of using custom parts, but some people like to be different. Now they need a big bore C13 that would be a C14 and you would have a full house.

    • @claterpillar1
      @claterpillar1 3 года назад +1

      @@AdeptApe id assume because the cost of a c18 crankshaft, with no core available. Plus c17 could be done as an inframe. Also the c17 should have a better rod ratio. Less side loading of piston. Pistons are made by mahle. Same as Caterpillar. Kinda a win for guys wanting more.

    Love the videos, I’m learning a lot. I’m looking at buying an older truck and want a CAT. I see a lot of them that are advertised as a 6NZ. Some have the oil fill tube on the drivers side near the front of the engine and some have it in the passé side just in front of and below the turbo. Are they both 6NZ but different year models, or are the 2 different engines? Thanks 😊👍

      Short version, too many changes to make a detailed video. Most of the time it's to improve the product or a emissions change is required.
      5EK first full electronic 15 liter engine, 1994-1997, ADEM II electronics.
      6TS same as above basically, 1997 ADEM II electronics.
      1LW 1998 ADEM II electronics
      2WS 1999 ADEM 2000 electronics
      Starting with 6NZ Cat change name to C-15.
      6NZ last Cat 15 liter truck engine before stricter EPA laws. ADEM 2000 electronics, 2000-2002
      MBN Last single turbo, smart wastegate and pilot injection if I recall. Not popular because of emission requirements. ADEM 2000 electronics, 2003
      Name change to C15
      BXS first dual turbo with ACERT technology, IVA and separate optional engine brake if equipped. 2003-2004
      MXS second dual turbo with ACERT technology, IVA and if equipped with a Cat compression brake they are made together.
      NXS, same as a MXS. MXS ran out of numbers. 2005-2006
      SDP, last 15 liter Cat truck engine. Most emission's regulations put on a Cat truck engine. Lots of emission related problems.
      2007 to last build.
      You also have 16 liter engines, 5DS 1998, 1MM 1999, 7CZ 2000-2002.
