His mom had her stroke/aneurysm when he was 11 years old. “11 and she was gone. 11 is when we waved goodbye.”
Maynards mom was the only one that called him Jimmy....the Stroke occured when he was 11 and his life changed forever, he went into survival mode as he got passed around the family and finally landed back with his dad, and never properly dealt with the trauma, as an adult he started some therapy (story is in his book) and this song was adult him getting in touch with 11 year old him and getting his head right.....rumor has it that this song was the inspiration for the character "11" on stranger things as the Duffer brothers are admitted metal heads and TooL fans......pretty fucking cool

Intermission was basically a "happy time" as a kid.... Then bam, the hard riff kicks in as you are hit with reality
ELEVEN is the age that “Maynard” JAMES Keenan (JIMMY) had his childhood (symbolized by Intermission) ripped away by the Aneurysm his mother JUDITH suffered (coincidentally in Ohio) that left her incapacitated for 10,000 DAYS before her death.

Intermission is literally a take on the old theater intermission jingle they used to play between movies so you had time to go to the concession stand. You'd have to be old like me to remember that though. 😁
Every now and then i forget how good this album was then I hear one song and it just takes me right back in time.
If there was a theme park with rides based on Tool songs, I’m staying far away from the Stinkfist roller coaster.

Tool isn’t an everyday thing. It’s a mood thing. They made a song for every mood one can feel. This is definitely the cool sounding song. Always loved it. Intermission just makes it better ( doo dooo doo ) another name for this song as i like to call it is ….Jim

If you take a look at the track listing for the Aenima album, you will see that "Intermission" is right in the middle... thus, it's the 'intermission' of the album.

Everyone be honest here, how many of you actually had any idea what this song was about when you first heard it? Maybe even after a handful of listens, if it was back in the day, you really had no idea what he was talking about or what the lyrics were because they were not published until a few years ago. His book came out long after the song, too, so his explanations weren't published either.
Funny how hindsight gives us the benefit of analysis.
