    Excellent video brother.
    One important thing people need to consider. If you are hunting birds, or squirrels in trees. If you miss? And you will! A pellet will be loosing its energy very quickly. But a slug will be flying to somewhere with the ability to still kill. So you must be sure of what's behind your target for a very long ways. A powerful rifle with a heavy slug aimed at the tree tops will go for hundreds of yards, possibly more.
    We see this every year when people shoot into the air on New Year's day. A flying bullet hits someone way away and kills them. As Tyler said, a slug is a bullet.
    Unless I was in wide open terrain. I would keep my slugs confined to shooting at ground level targets.
    God bless you all. 🎯

    Too me either work. But my Hatsan 135 .25 absolutely loves H&N Grizzly. I shoot the grizzlies under an inch easily at 30 yards freehand. The grizzlies are absolutely devastating on game. With a head shot I definitely think my 135 with the grizzlies would take a coyote with no issues within proper ranges. In my Hatsan 155 Torpedo .22, it absolutely loves the Crosman hollow points and they hit with authority as well. Definitely think even with the Crosman pellets in my 155 it would drop a coyote within proper ranges. The further I get into the airgunning, the more I realize how amazing they are and that a lot of game doesn’t need high fpe like people claim. So be safe and have fun!

    Was playing with a Bulldog with pellets and Nosler and realized for close range situations like home defense pellets deform and quickly dump its energy so make more sense because less chance of pass through. The Nosler can easily pass through an intruder and possibly your neighbor too. They don't deform much going through flesh. Of course depending how far apart the homes are.

    It would be awesome, and a great deal more informative and applicable, if you make another video and shoot the pellets at around 840 to 890 fps--the highest velocities at which the vast majority of people shoot them (and above which pellets tend to loose accuracy).
    The expansion of the pellets relative to one another shot at more common velocities will be different from the results you obtained here. For example, the Polymags will not peel backwards onto themselves--making their final diameter larger--and the other two pellets will not expand as much at standard velocities. This will in turn significantly affect the cavitation and penetration of the pellets, individually and relative to one another.
    Likewise the comparison between pellets shot 200 to 400 fps faster than most people shoot them and slugs at their ideal velocities is not relevant for most people.
    Also, please provide the distance to the target and the approximate velocity on impact, since that is by far the most relevant velocity.

    For my AEA HP SS .30 cal, I like the Hades pellets. I bought it for small game at 50 yards max. The Hades are extremely accurate out to that distance.
    For my Hatsan Bully .25 cal, I use NSA slugs to reach out to 100+ yards. After watching this video, I think I'll get some FX Hybrids to try out. Even with slugs, shooting at 100 yards with 70 FPE, wind is still a pain in the butt.
    I also have a Hatsan Bullboss .25 that hates slugs. It likes the Hades pellets just fine.

    question for in the know shooters : there are some air gun video's that claim slugs wear on your barrel more because they have full contact where as a pellet just has a small part on the head, and the skirt.
    As far as the video goes, loved it, I learned so much more about slugs VS pellets _ Thanks

    • @heithwatkins

    • @wildrangeringreen
      @wildrangeringreen 2 года назад

      Like has been said, lead is softer than steel.
      Even still, air rifles do not require nearly as much bearing surface as firearms do in order to maintain a hold on the rifling (lower pressures), so you can design bullets with less bearing surface specifically for airguns (Truncated cone- Wasp waisted- boat tail, anyone?)

I guess no one wants to show the downside which more people will run into. I think you and I have talked about it before.

      There are less expensive guns that can shoot slugs well, the Air Venturi Avenger is definitely one of them. But as we said in the video, they definitely need the right barrel to perform well. This could certainly change in the future though. I now test slugs when caliber appropriate as part of our review process, but so far, only a few guns tested have shot them well enough to make it into the review.
      At some point, we will probably do a .25 cal slug/pellet comparison video as well, and maybe we will include some different guns there to provide a more in depth look. We shall see.

    Excellent. The next thing that would be interesting to look at is what kind of barrels respond better to slugs. Also, what exactly distance is the maximum distance in terms of hunting larger game like hogs using a 22 slug, as compared to a 25 slug.

    Hi Tylor just what is the general lowest FPS for a slug to work well in both .22 and .25?

    • @tylerpatner6591
      @tylerpatner6591 3 года назад +2

      Depends on what your definition of "work well" is. I've shot them at 650 fps out of guns with good enough accuracy to take small game at 25-30 yards, but that's not going to be ideal for expansion. At the end of the day, you want to push them as fast as you can. In my experience so far, If you have a barrel that shoots them accurately, the faster the better. But above 850-870 fps range at a minimum is what I'd be looking for....but again, if your gun can send them faster than that, do it!

    Hey Tyler, Thanks for the excellent review. At 9:05 you mention there arent a lot of slug options for springers. Does this mean that slugs generally dont perform well with springers vs igt?
    Since 36 and 40 grn bullets are already made by cci is it possible to shoot cci bullets out of a pellet gun? Fps should be around 260-270ish?
    Anyway, thanks again.
    Stay safe, be well, and God Bless.

    • @tylerpatner6591
      @tylerpatner6591 3 года назад +4

      That's correct Ken. A lot of the issue with slugs for springers, is that slugs typically are very heavy (when we talk about standard ammo weights for springers/gas rams), and slugs like to be shot fast. Since most spring/gas rams cannot be adjusted greatly like a PCP can, you really get what you get in terms of performance, and often times that's simply too slow to get good consistent accuracy from a springer. Now, Predator/JSB did talk about a lead free slug project at SHOT Show in 2020, so that could offer a lighter weight option that may be doable for spring/gas ram guns, but only time will tell.

    I have a 36 Joule .177 IGT air rifle, and I didn't understand why slugs were only recommended for use in PCP's, since 36 Joule muzzle energy should be more than enough.
    Then I bought an Acetech AC6000 BT Chronograph to test just how fast my H&N Rabbit Magnum II slugs exited the barrel. To my surprise, the ten shot average speed was less than 190 metres per second - and muzzle energy was around 18 Joule.
    Now, my cronograph may not be very precise, and I haven't had the opportunity to test with pellets - and the slugs in my 27 Joule PCP - so I won't immediately make any conclusions, but it does look like the text on the lid of the tin tells the truth: for PCP rifles only.
    In a few days I will know more ... and may return.

    What if they made slugs like the lead bullets for black powder rifles. The slugs have three points that touch the barrel. It looks like a tree . Cone pointed end a space then a ring that' touches the barrel, the end ring that goes next to the patch or charge.

    Please correct me if I am wrong. This is a summation.
    I own the KERVAN Airboss K-1, 25 caliber. Barrel length is 58 cm. Muzzle velocity. Max. 1100 FPS. 335m/s.
    I’m using the JSB exact King Heavy Diablo and JSB slug knockout.
    - If i am target shooting/marksmanship from 50 to 100 yards then standard pellets should be fine?
    - If I am going for long range target shooting/marksmanship, then I should be using slugs? For example, anything over a 100 yard distance you are going to get less of a trajectory curve fall off, thus in turn more accuracy at long distances?
    - If you’re hunting small game at say 50 yards to 75 yards you should use pellets?
    - If you are hunting larger game at say 50 to 100 yards, then use slugs because the impact of the slug will be greater than a pellet with more expansion?

  • @hankvana2149
    @hankvana2149 3 года назад +1

    Just wanted to mention that the typical pellet gun is exactly that: a PELLET gun and most don't have the power or the barrel needed for slugs - they are not designed for slugs anymore than the average family car is suited for a race track. Slugs and long range shooting are fun, challenging and expensive - not only the slugs themselves but the rifle and optics as well. IMHO, One of the advantages of shooting pellets is that they ARE short range projectiles; slugs carry a very long distance and retain a lot of energy which is something that you want to keep in mind if you are shooting in populated areas.
