What an eye opener! I've trained to a hand target, but because I train from a wheelchair, I've always felt limited in what I could teach that way. No more. Thanks for being such a great "dog owner trainer"

I do love the ratio of "teach" to "train" in this video. Teaching a dog to live with humans is far more fruitful than training a cued response.

This was eye-opening! I'm certainly doing this with my dog.

We got an intermediate trick title today & thanks to IYC, which was our handler's choice trick, she laid down with treats on her everywhere, & around her for a least a minute. Thank you so much for recallers, home school, wag nation & say yes dog school!

My dog knows how to nose target and paw target. What more could there possibly be? Leave it to Susan, the sky is the limit! Looking forward to Part 2 😊

I've just started following your video for loose leash walking, which took me to pivots and spins, which took me to target stick training parts 1 and 2. We did our first day of clicker training and target stick training yesterday and it went unbelievably well! I would LOVE to see a video of how you teach some of the other targeting behaviors, especially those that help with husbandry tasks. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with the world - improving (and saving!) so many dog's lives and those of their "parents."

I'm curious, how are your pup and you doing?
It's always super interresting for me when someone discovers clicker/markertraining and starts target/trick training, when i think about how excited i was when i 1st found out about it, and about the many, many things one can do with it. It's somehow like you found a key to a whole new world of dog training and endless possibilitys.
Edit: i'm certain you watched them in the mean time, but maybe for someone who find's Susans Videos for the 1st time:
She has a couple of Videos about different 'husbandary-things' on her Channel. Here is one for nail trimming for ex.:

@UC_u17VK7OWdxQGNma_9RtLA Hi Nea - I use clicker training multiple times daily, but have only used target stick training a few times. I need to do some troubleshooting as he gets over excited with the target stick and SLAMS it with his nose and bites it about half the time. Thanks so much for asking!

I started watching podcasts on puppy training a month before I got my puppy. There are so many of them! However, all of Susan's videos really stand out as they are so DIFFERENT to all the others! She does teach the mechanics but more importantly, she teaches the why. She makes you think, encourages you to stop and plan and the majority of her training is done through shaping the behaviour in small steps rather than just by luring and repetition. She talks so much sense and does everything with kindness, never forgetting the importance of light-heartedness and humour. Now I never listen to anyone else.

Mindblown. That was amazing. I knew how to nose/paw target but definetly want to learn how to target the other body parts. So functional! Thank u!🐾

Hi Susan. I have recently obtained ownership of a 6 month old deaf border collie. I have had her since February 2nd and the pup is fitting in superbly. I have 4 others and I am beginning to communicate with signing which is somewhat different as I’ve had deaf dogs in the past but they started off hearing. I really enjoyed this video and can apply so much to this little girls training. You can at anytime do a video on deaf dogs in agility and I’ll be taking notes in double time. Lol. I’m looking forward to part 2 of targeting. Thank you for bringing so much to the dog world of training.

I have my dogs lay on their side when I brush their teeth or manage their nails. I've noticed they sometimes put their chin down instead of lay over on their side. I never thought to reinforce them targeting the surface under them with the side of their face. Such a good idea. You are always expanding my understanding of how dogs see the world. Thank you for that, my dogs thank you too. :)

In addition to pivoting at my side, I find it useful also to train the dog to pivot directly facing me. This is very useful when I want the dog to back up straight away from whatever direction I am facing. For example to line up for the starting line in agility training, or for pushing a gym ball to me, or to back up into a corner of a room, and many other purposes.

Loved this and part 2. Do you have any videos specifically for targeting body parts other than the nose (like the ones you mentioned in this video)?

Do you have a video on potty training cues from your pup ... like how to teach them to tell me outside as a layer besides him doing his tell sings inside?

So interesting! Do you plan on having one place where the various kinds of target training will available collectively - so that there will be an order of skills that can be followed? I ask this because I tend to jump all over the place worrying that I'll never teach everything the puppy needs to know in its youth before she's all grown up! I see some links in Recallers, H360, & Agility Nation but not one specific place for what you've shown. It just all makes so much sense!!

I love your videos and learn from them but this I cannot make head or tail of. Is targeting getting your dog to touch a certain part of his body, but for what purpose? Perhaps I should just go on to something I can understand better.

I am excited to see Part 2. I have a young lab that I am going to teach to be a Diabetic Assistance Dog. Targeting will be a huge step in this process and I am anxious to best figure out how to use it.
