There is a live video of Van Halen that has Sammy and Eddie going toe to toe trading guitar licks that shows just how good Sammy is on the guitar

This is from Sammy's 1984 album VOA. He also recorded an album in 1984 with HSAS -- H = Hagar,
S = Neal Schon on guitar (Journey, Santana, Bad English, Hardline), A = Kenny Aaronson on bass (Rick Derringer, Blue Oyster Cult, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts), S = Michael Shrieve on drums (Santana). Then joined Van Halen and 5150 was released in 1986.

When this song came out the expressway speed limit was 55. The reason was the oil embargo is what the Gov claimed as it would save on gas. A year or so after this song came out, it was raised to 65. Now of course it is 70, 75, or 80 depending on the state and area. Thank you Sammy if you played a part of this..

Sammy literally got pulled over by the cops for going over the maximum speed limit, (Which at the time was 55) and said to the cops, "55? I can't drive 55" and the rest is rock history.

I was wondering when you two would stumble onto this one. Lol
NOW you have to do Sammy Hagar's "Heavy Metal", which is the title track to the soundtrack of the animated movie by that same name. If you like "I Can't Drive 55", you'll LOVE "Heavy Metal"!

Sammy started out with Montrose as a singer, then moved on to a solo act where he played guitar also. If you check out his live album "All Night Long", you should react to Bad Motor Scooter where he has an epic guitar battle with his other guitarist, Gary Pihl, who now plays with Boston. Also, check out Sammy & Eddie live at Farm Aid 1985 playing Rock n Roll by Led Zeppelin. That was their first time on stage together, and I was there.

One thing you may not get is that this was in the era of frustration over the national speed limit of 55. I drove across states to and from college and that speed was PAINFUL for a long drive. I loved this song. Not long after, Sammy joined VH. ✝️

The mechanic in the beginning of the video that he called Claudio -- he was Sammy Hagar & Eddie VanHalen's mechanic. When David Lee Roth left Van Halen, Claudio told Eddie that Sammy was just there. He said why don't you call Sammy -- the rest is history.

I saw this tour in 1985 at Indianapolis (the old Market Square Arena) with 15,000 crazy fans - we were so loud for Sammy he played an extra 3 songs (I've Done Everything For You, Plain Jane and Trans Am (highway wonderland) and it didn't hurt I got to see my favorite band open for him - the mighty KROKUS - they were on their The Blitz tour. One of the best shows I ever saw. The crowd was loud - so much it blew Sammy into his speakers!

Saw The Red Rocker in concert November 13th,1984 here in Louisville, Kentucky at Louisville Gardens, Krokus was the opening act (you really should do them).
In that time weed was highly illegal, and you had to buy it from a street dealer or the like. But did that didn't matter to Sammy or his band, and specifically his bass player......nope!
Cheech and Chong were a huge comedy duo at that time and in one of their records the paper sleeve, that protected the album from the cardboard cover itself, was made of a huge rolling paper; someone at the concert, who happened to be up front where my friends and I were, (in those days it was general admission and there weren't any seats you just stood on the floor and crushed up against the stage) had taken a quarter bag of weed and used the sleeve as was intended and made literally the biggest joint I've ever seen even to this day.
They lit it up took a huge drag then passed it down the line, we all took a big toke, and then Sammy saw that log and asked for it to be passed on stage. He proceeded to take a hit himself then gave it to his bass player who proceeded to toke on that monster through the entire next song. It was about as memorable an experience as I've ever had in my 54 years on this earth!!!

Personally I hated this song. I never liked or accepted Sammy as being a part of Van Halen. This one and Right Now aren’t bad songs but my loyalty remained with David Lee Roth as the only frontman that I wanted to see. Going from Running with the Devil to I Can’t Drive 55 was a disappointing hard swallow. The magic was gone and replaced with commercially pushed garbage. Now that you’ve peeked into that rabbit hole, I’d recommend Reacting to David Lee Roth’s California Girls video. Strange times back then.
