Thank you Ria. That is everything i need to understand about GMRS. Now I can enroll, get a home GRMS radio base station & call my non-ham family from the grocery store on a real-time hand transeiver, and they can reply or suffer the acceptance of my food choices/shampoo choices. An excellent convenience beyond cell phones that no one seems to have time to answer...no more talking to cellphone answering services and wondering if they/family will call back in a timely manner (before the checkout line)! Yes. I live in a rural area and frequently shop for the family, on the way home from work. I can easily save more than $35 a year shopping (on a 10-year GMRS license) by buying what is on sale at the store, if they don't answer my choice call to a home GMRS base station. Yes I'm a stubborn-cheap-evil father & husband; ha ha ha ha, as Dr. Evil would chuckle...j

@Jim :Daneke A lot of people here in the Nashville area got into GMRS and Ham over the last year. After the Nashville bombing, most cell towers in the center of the state were down for over a week. It affected areas as far north as the Kentucky border, and as far east as Knoxville. Katrina had a similar effect. Obviously repeaters can be down as well, so a good antenna is important to go simplex. I think it's good to have a backup plan for communications. I've used FRS for multiple vehicles traveling together. everything has it's place.

There are probably people transmitting with neither license figuring they shouldn't need one. If you use either service, you should have the license for it. Someone else breaking the rules is a lame justification for you doing it. GMRS is basically for (not meant as an insult) appliance operators. It's for people that want two-way radio as a tool to support other activities. Ham radio purposes are wider than that allowing much more than uhf fm and repeaters Get the license for the service that suits your interest and don't worry so much about what someone else is doing. Especially if it's illegal.

She'll sometimes leave me on a SOTA summit while she gets a head start down, or will want to take a rest while I continue hiking up to the summit. She got lost one time, but as luck would have it I had a visual on her bright purple do-rag about 150 yards down the mountainside and we had LTE service. At that point I got us a GMRS license. She now carries a GMRS radio so we can stay in contact when out on the trail.

In the area where I live, you can't tune to a single channel without hearing a business on the frequency. Of coarse they have the code squelch enabled so you're not going to tell them that they're operating illegally without finding the codes they're using. Even then, they don't care, they have radios and will continue to use them for their business.

Great video! Got my GMRS license last month (WRNU677). Using a Radioddity GM-30. Found a couple of repeaters in my area, but not much traffic as yet. Right now it's mostly for hobby, although I may purchase another transceiver in the future for family use, as the license covers all family members. The GM-30 can also monitor 2-meter Ham/Skywarn, NOAA weather frequencies and FM broadcast, making it a worthwhile investment in addition to GMRS. It's also good to have a alternative for short-range communication in the event cell service is out of range or temporarily unavailable (like happened in my area a few years back when a technical glitch took Verizon service down for several hours). Ham license is next on my list....just gotta set the time aside for it.

The FCC website is an absolute nightmare! Logging in isn’t enough, if you only log into your FRN management. Same with the ULS (or whatever) you just have to keep logging in to different pages randomly and in 10 years you’ll find the right one. Though pausing on you screen capture there did give me the hint to look for “wireless”… Because searching for “license manager” gets you no where. I also tried this in my phone… probably best to try on a pc… Anyway it’s done. Happy to pay $35 for GMRS. But wish I could submit a request with the payment that I’d like my money to go to someone competent in website navigation…

I guess you could call it a manpack? note: that was 35 years ago. lol. What else could I do without a car to mount it in? So I would throw on my manpack and ride around on my bicycle. Well when I heard about GMRS with 50W repeaters up in UHF on FM mode, I was giddy! Always did love radio, but HAM just seemed to formal. I get it, I wouldn't want lollygaggers mucking up quiet bands either. CB being limited to 4W and no repeaters is a bit constricting. GMRS is great because you give the little ones the FRS, and the adults on GMRS is a win win! Repeaters mean reliable comms with greater reach, and cleaner signal. FRS means kids won't get in trouble and cheap to replace. I just wish they would allow more channels, but am thankful for GMRS never the less. HAMS say 73s, GMRSers say 69s!!!

    Aloha Ria,
I won the Radioddity GM30 GMRS Handheld radio from Ham Radio Dude’s RUclips channel several weeks ago and paid the $70 last week and got my new call sign the next day.
Then my daughter who just turned 18 years old was applying for job that involves taking tourists out into the ocean that utilizes her sailing license for Dolphin Tours and she added our GMRS License and call sign to help her get the job. She doesn’t have an interest in Ham radio yet but this is a big first step for her. I told her that if she gets the job that I would program my brand new GM30 and give it to her for work and emergencies if needed. I got the GM30, next I need to buy a GMRS base station and I might buy a GMRS repeater too now that I have the license. Maybe you can do a follow up video to this one later on if GMRS starts developing a large following. Thanks again and 73’

@@n2rj My daughter was really wanting to get her technician license when she was 6 or 7 years old because the Technician manual at that time featured a 7 year old girl from here in Hawaii as the youngest licensed Amateur radio operator here in America but I made the mistake of taking her to a few club meetings not knowing that the club meetings were held at the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) next to Pearl Harbor Hickham or basically a bar and it was nothing but a bunch of old guys drinking booze during the entire meeting with some getting wasted even before the meeting got started. I don’t drink and drive when I have family members with me. I’ll have a few drinks if I’m by myself but still very rare, especially as retired federal law enforcement trainer. I think my daughter felt like a fish out of water at the time and I was pretty to Hawaii then also.
As she and my son got older, between their school work and the Scouts, they simply lost interest in becoming fourth generation Hams. I hope they develop the Amateur radio bug later on in life. That would make me feel so proud but I can’t push them into the hobby either, so GMRS is truly a big first step for them. Thank again, Ria! ❤️

Like some commenters, I also find the whole licensing scheme and cost to be more FCC nonsense. I am old school from the era when CB was only 23 channels, and I had a 3-ch. crystal set. Swapping crystals from Radio Shack! CB licensing was mandatory then too. Finally CB became license free. What rubbed me about licensing was that it limits those who can't afford it. Thus creates a have and have-not class of citizens. I firmly believe wireless communications is a matter of safety. Our country is vast in territory. As technology progresses, it becomes more accessible to the masses. Which allows access to added safety and security. But these licensing regulations adds a bureaucratic-artificial obstacle. Once again, only those who can afford it can and allowed to operate. Promotion of privilege and sidelines the under-privileged. It's a good thing CB became open. FM-CB on the other hand is lobbied into being for profit-driven motives. Not the improvement agenda of moving away from AM. FRS/GMRS should not have been divided, or power regulated. If you must, then FRS which is the modern CB, should be sufficiently powered to not limit its effective range. It could be a matter of life and death and ~100mW-1000mW would be a terrible reason for a family to perish in the wilderness stuck in a blizzard. If GMRS must be licensed, it should have access to FRS channels as well. Instead of two units. And give it all the beans, wattage, private and more FCC-funded repeaters. Provide something for that $35/yr. I believe citizens-band should mean open airwaves for the public civilians. I find it just as ridiculous that our public lands are restricted in access. There are many parallels I see with BLM and FAA regulations. National Parks that cost an arm and a leg for a family to visit. But trillions can be wasted on cost-plus military contracts, oil subsidies, foreign aid, raises for politicians, etc. Big government is only getting bigger.

On your point about dual service radios, I believe this applies to consumer-oriented radios that did not require licensing. Nothing that I know of restricts new GMRS “full coverage” radios from being introduced provided their output is appropriately restricted on FRS channels. This means that going forward those people in need of a hybrid solution must now buy a GMRS radio and be licensed accordingly. Is that how you understand it?
