Miss you, Steve! You have taught me so much over the years. RIP, buddy!
Been hot and dry in Aberdeenshire for a while and now we're back to normal downpours. ....subscribed 👍😎
Great video, here in the east Midlands we've had it hot and dry, and thats affected germination no end, its tempting to sow again even though its late, so thats exactly what I've been doing
Never give in sowing untill there is an icicle hanging off your nose, someone once said to me...Steve...🙂
great video mate
hot then rainy over here in holland. Planting spinach, pak choi, rucula, winter postelein, veldsla
Last spring I sowed 10 year old cauliflower seeds, just to see... Got nearly 100% germination. I never give up on the brassica seeds. Hate throwing any seed out!
Traditionally, home vegetable gardens are cleaned up and closed up the first week of September in my .region of southern Ontario, Canada. (Growing time May 24-Sept 5)
Temperatures now in the autumn vary from 5C-11C at night 10 -19C daytime and first frost is around October 1-10 and hard frost a few weeks later.
Right now we are experiencing steady 13 C day/night and flooding continuous rains.
For a few years, I have been experimenting with plants and various techniques (vertical growing, successive sowing, low tunnels, intensive planting, soil improvement, etc) to extend the season and increase productivity.
Shortly I will be putting in some homemade low tunnels.
I have also planted new seed in the last month for potential cool weather crops (lettuce, spinach, swiss chard , kale, Chinese cabbage, radish, etc) and it is freaking out the other community gardeners (see above).
Both of my gardens are absolutely spilling over with fall produce and it is baffling those who currently have bare soil and think all should have been cleared out weeks ago.
I have been gifting various people in the village with overflowing baskets of produce all summer and continue now- including a "one year welcome to the community anniversary" pile of vegetables for a vegan.
I am barely keeping up with harvesting produce and eating, sharing and preserving the crops.
(Drops in exhaustion)
Sowing seeds are so exciting!!
It always is, I have been doing it for fifty years now and I still get excited doing it !! ...Steve...🙂
Here on the south coast my garden problems are the opposite to yours. Too hot for many seeds to germinate. Cucumbers and runner beans cooked in the hat. French beans fared better. Nothing underground eg carrots and beetroot. Celery and celeriac a write-off. BUT amzing crop of tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and chillies and my lemon tree (6 years old and destined for the compost) went mad, produced a mass of flowers and 15 lemons -which are ripening. It's been like living in the Med!
Wow, I have always wanted to grow Lemons, and you have some ripening!...Steve...🙂
Still mild here .(Cornwall ) Rain coming in for the weekend . I'm growing similar lot of seeds to you in our shed. All coming along nicely so far .I always pop in to see what you are doing , excellent videos !
Thank you Daisy, glad you pop in to see us all. Probably a good spot in front of a shed window, wont get as hot during the day as it will in a tunnel...Steve...🙂
Hi Steve hope your well, this year has been a bit of a disaster for me as the weather has just been so hot and dry, but you’ve inspired me to have a go at sowing some seeds for the autumn and winter 😀 have a great weekend and stay safe David 👍👍
Thats the spirit David, keep going and never give in !...Steve...🙂
Try sowing your lettuce seed on top of the compost. They require light to germinate
yes just a sprinkling of compost on top...Steve...🙂
im in south wales we had a fantastic year a real abundance of veg, salad crops , tomatoes galore and my favourite cucumbers all still cropping great i grew carrots in the garden and some in a container both were great i do have a brand new rhino greenhouse which has automatic openings which helped a lot but i did pay a lot of attention to watering and placement of plants also i have fans in there if it gets too hot the door was open a lot this year as well only today was it a little cooler thanks for the videos steve i enjoy picking up tips.
Thank you Susan, sounds like you have a perfect set there!...Steve...🙂
Hi Steve, I have sown seeds, plants got off to a good start then, they basically fried with the recent hot weather. You have now motivated me into sowing more seeds now as our weather is 22C today and we are going to get rain starting tomorrow but, the temperatire is still going to be between 20/22C over the next week. It isnt normally this warm at this time of Year but, will give it a go. I always get lots from your videos, thanks for sharing and take care 🙂
Many thanks Christine, gladd you enjoy and benefit from the videos, gives me inspiration to carry on making them...Steve...🙂
It's literally been 30°C with hardly any rain for three months solid down here in Freiburg in Germany. Luckily I put outdoor grown peppers and aubergine in earlier in the year so they've been doing well in containers on the terrace.
p.s. missed the musical out-tro at the end! The thumbnails for other videos covered your face when watching the goodbye message on a mobile btw
Ooh I missed that Reggie, thanks for the heads up. Cannot change it now but I will check better next time before publishing...Steve...🙂
NW of Chicago. Outside germination spotty with brassicas and lettuce. Had to bring inside. Still quite hot here...87f today.
Nice temps Robin but lousy for getting things done in the garden...Steve...🙂
It’s been strange here in Hull , hot and dry for ages , 1st of September and it’s suddenly autumn, just like that !
Leaves falling next, although I now down south they have been for some while now...Steve...🙂
Thought it was just me that thought this summer has been just average. Grey skies slow ripening. Lawn looks very green though 🤪
Describes my season and lawn perfectly !...Steve...🙂
I’ve just sown leeks, spring onions, white onions,in plastic containers from which I had potatoes,my courgette went rotten so I took it out and just sowed parsnip in a tub
Hi Roger, your spring onions will be fine and should grow well, Leeks, White Onions and Parsnips should really have been planted months ago now. Your white onions and Leeks will grow into something maybe the size of a small spring onion, but I doubt the parsnips will do much, however leave them in they may grow to a small size by next spring...Steve...🙂
Great video I need to do more seeds, I was surprised I did seeds same time as u, didn't hold out much hope but they all come through for me.
I saw your other post Mark, about leaving trays outside, smart move when indoor temps can get too hot...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp thanks, I took a gamble after I see your video where u said you seeds didn't grow very well in your poly tunnel, the temps where I am are till quiet warm
Weather here in north east wales has been steady between 19-22 degrees and around 12 over night
Not that far from you and it's still very hot here also
We have had a couple of overnight temps under 10 degrees this week, autumn is trying to get started...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp we are only 300yards from the coast so we tend to stay a couple of degrees warmer than most especially as we are surrounded by mountains
for me cucumbers toms never had so many peas beans total fail potatoes early was great....then fail....just sown april cabbage and some kholrabi seedllings.....its been an odd year here in devon.....dare i say it too hot
Yes a strange year indeed, pretty bad for me and I am missing a few crops this year but I will not go hungry, nor will we be buying vegetables, I have had to adapt this year...Steve...🙂
My freckles lettuce which I planted out directly two weeks ago have taken off like crazy! Surprised me. My Rouge d’hiver might have succumbed to the neighbour’s cat but we’ll see. Thanks for the encouragement. May I ask how deep your green seed trays are? I’m trying to find something similar in Canada and having little luck! I’m thinking of putting drainage holes in plastic letter tray bins that are 7 cm deep. I don’t know if they are food grade or not. Stuff is so flimsy now! BC Canada
Hi Frances I think mine are around 50-60mm deep, hope that helps you!...Steve...🙂
Struggling with a lot of things here too Steve, particularly spinach, even new seed is really struggling, we're still having daytime temps up to around 29c, down now to around 15c at night, even my small lean to greenhouse has the windows open all the time and a shade cloth to stop the burning heat of the day, no significant rain to speak either..
I put all my seeds out doors and they all grew, it to hot in my greenhouse to sow seeds
Yes, I've been sowing in the house til I get germination as it's much cooler..
@@stephenbrammall2565 I watch Steve video where he struggled In the greenhouse so I did my seedling out side, didn't have much hope was surprised they all came up
@@markshaw5835 A change of location from your norm will often get around problems, this is what I have done this time...Steve...🙂
Hey Steve, can you show when you take the kale from the big bed to the next stage. I’m new to gardening and sowed some seeds, they grew in my little trays but lots all together. Didn’t really know where to go from there as I had 100s of little plants. Sorry if that sounds daft! Thanks in advance
I will do Becca, probably in a week or so...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp Brilliant! Will look forward to it. Thank you
Hi Steve, first time for watching you.
I love gardening and have lots of seeds to sow but don't have a poly tunnel or a greenhouse. I have some lettuce that I will try outdoors, it's a winter hardy one, maybe even try some carrots. One question, I have one pepper plant first time I've grown them, currently outdoors in a pot. I think I need to bring it indoors and cut back for spring, can it survive in an unheated greenhouse over winter?
It’s been very dry in the West Midlands, waiting for the rain to start tonight
You will be thankful of that rain finally...Steve...🙂
Just for the sake for understanding your growing conditions in comparison to mine, where (roughly) are you? Are you in the south or in the North? I'm in the North West and it's been awful here. I'm praying for rain 🌧️😭
Was just growing flowers and herbs this year but after seeing my parents impressive veg patch I want to give it a go. Wish me luck 🤣
I am in North west Cumbria, so probably not too far from you...Steve...🙂
Hi Ste, great vids mate 👍. My peppers haven't produced fruit yet, do I put them into the greenhouse for overwintering or is it just too late? I have 4 varieties all in separate pots. Cheers, Ian.
It’s definitely been a funny year here on the south coast too. Everything seems so slow to grow & ripen. It hasn’t been an abundant year.
I feel burnt out now but will try sowing more seeds after watching you.
Thats the spirit Jo, winners never quit !...Steve...🙂
I know it’s mad but I still get envious of your hanging shelves… such an amazing idea❤❤
I'm fairly certain you can set one up in your greenhouse Eli...Steve...🙂
Surprisingly here in South Manchester it's still warm and sometimes even hot, but a little windy
Make the most of that warm weather Rachel, I fear weather changes just around the corner...Steve...🙂
Hi Steve, Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸 Hot and humid 90's are the humidity is in the 80% range.
I made a couple videos on getting my fall garden started. But I had to pull out all of my Sweet Potato Vines out because of White Fly. Time to clean up the yard, organic bug spray and hopefully begin again 👩🌾👍
Take care of yourself, Steve 🌿💚🌿
That weather seems quite oppressive!...Steve...🙂
My early sowings were poor like Leeks and Onions and my carrots, Basil all failed early on but my Spuds, Runner beans and Beets have had bumper crops.
Great video Steve.
It has been a funny year for sure, turn your back for a second and something dies or get eaten...Steve...🙂
substrate in those trays that are struggling to germinate look too wet, sodden, lack of aeration and drainage looks very poor.
my seed eowing has been patchy for the opposite reason to yours. here in manchester its been hot and dry. i couldn't keep up with the watering. asmittedly, some seeds were from older packets. the worst seeds to germinate were garlic chives. i think next time i try them, i'll stratify them first...............brian
So many different problems in such a small country, that always fascinates me...Steve...🙂

Great video just subscribed to you
Thanks for the video Steve 📹
You are welcome Tim...Steve...🙂
Hi Steve. Our weather in Oxfordshire has been very hot for weeks with little rain so plenty of watering (with a can). About 2 weeks ago sowed various lettuces, chard, spinach and parsley plus spring onions. As it was so hot I brought seed trays in to house where hopefully it was a little cooler. Most things germinated other than the spinach. However, I moved outside to cold frame and now everything is coming up and doing well. No sign of parsley yet but that tends to be a little slow. Also sowed a couple of buckets with Charlotte potatoes for Christmas all being well. How did your potatoe experiment turnout with the stacking buckets?
Hi Trevor, glad you have your seedlings up and running. Potato stack buckets will be in an upcoming video, I am not expecting much due to the various wetaher patterns this year, but it will be interesting to compare with anyone else who tried it to. I know of at least one other who I will ask for photo's from them...Steve...🙂
Hi. I needed the boost for fall planting
Gardening can be infectious, seeing one person doing something in the garden can inspire a few more...Steve...🙂
Hi Steve, i am a new follower and love the ideas and advise you have for growing under under cover. I wanted to ask your thoughts on using layers of grass clippings on raised bed in the polytunnels to help keep in moisture and add fibre to the soil? Would it attract slugs? Cheers.
Welcome here, using grass as mulch is only something I have ever done on a very small scale before, the tops of a few pots or a small area of bed, so I have no real experience to answer with. I have always used grass clipping in my compost heap instead where (to me) they are more important to help a heap heat up quite quickly. GRass would work very well as a mulch I think but as for it attracting slugs, I am not so sure. Slugs are in all soil, yes the do like to congregate in dark damp areas, which could be hundreds of areas along with your grass mulch. Best thing to do would be to try an area of your tunnel if you are unsure of doing all of it. I have at least one Toad in all of my tunnels because at this time of the year if I find one out on the plot during the Autumn tidy up, I put it in the tunnel and they live there year round quite happily, one has a particulr marking on its head and has been there three years!!...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp thanks Steve, I hope I can get toads and frogs to live in mine to! Keep up the fabulous work. Really enjoyed the setting up your allotment series as well.
Thankyou very much for the info xxx
You are very welcome...Steve...🙂
Great video thank you 😊
Many thanks Beth...Steve...🙂
Not far from you in Scotland and yes the weather has been awful for me too. Cold and wet, absolutley no drought here mate!! It's amazing how even Eli who's considerably further north in Scotland has had a great summer. Starting some seeds off, carrots and beetroot did not germinate two weeks ago but new sowing has this week. Fingers crossed that sowing others now will give something for the autumn and winter. 🤞🤞🤞
