Lots of things, two i can think of are measuring femto-amps (for measuring leakage etc.), and by using it in a voltage divider, you can measure really high voltages... I have also read about them being used on the output of ion chambers in radiation detectors / meters...
Here’s an idea; take the chip off, and rewire the board so there’s one common, and the other leads of the LEDs are brought out individually. Not that it matters because the whole unit is sealed up with plastic, but the one side of the zapper that is connected to mains, it would have little if any voltage if it were connected to the neutral leg. BUT, not sure if you have a neutral leg with your high mains voltage. In the US, we have three wires coming in, two hot and out of phase giving 240 volts between them with a neutral (close to ground) being electrically between them (practically ground altho it is not for use as a ground (it may have up to 3 volts on it) which gives you 120 volts between it and either hot. The standard power mains here is 240 volts which is split with a neutral into two (and out of phase) 120 volt circuits.
Mine arrived today from Bangood, very bright! :) However, it doesn't seem to do the dimming thing. First switch on and you get bug zapper and full brightness (I assume - it is very bright.) Is there a polarity standard for the ES fitting? It would perhaps make sense for the screw part to be Neutral, as if anyone was changing a bulb without knowing the power was off, it would be easier to make contact with that part. On that assumption, it would be better for that side to be the direct connection to the grid.

The question I wanted answering is "does it actually kill flies?". I've tried several of these Chinese bug zappers including the fancy spherical one that Clive tested which sucks them in, but none of them attract houseflies. They only attract small moths during the night (we don't have mosquitoes around here).

I've tried one of these devices in my back kitchen a few years ago. Unfortunately it didn't zap houseflies, bluebottles and wasps to death but harmless moths, butterflies, and daddy longlegs. The volume of these perfectly innocent insects that where lured in by the light to be zapped and fall into the "death tray" underneath that needs frequent emptying will no doubt provide positive feedback to the owner that this device works great. Disease carrying flies never bother with it, preferring the bin or any food left out or even a roast left resting in the oven (they find their way around the back and up and in). Also the dog shit and cat shit from the neighbourhood. Utterly useless devices. I tend to encourage house spiders instead. Keep the fresh webs and dust away the old ones. ;)
May be Google translate can do that translation properly now, but just thought to roughly translate the data sheet bottom 6 lines, it says something like: Typical application: R1=R2=10O when 0.3s
The biting ones (mostly female mosquitoes) are mostly attracted to the CO2 we breathe out, with other factors, like body heat and smell, having some effect too, but CO2 is good bait. Some good bug zappers take advantage of this, or you can add an acid to a base (vinegar and bicarbonate of soda is a classic safe one) to get the same gas to attract mosquitoes.
"Kill A Watt" meters are everywhere.... not sure how accurate they are but if you're near a harbor freight you can score one same day no shipping if you really need one

Unless mine's' are different model, which i wouldn't know much but Still gaves me anxiety Seeing the popping off apart the Sections Lol I've been Looking to fix my bilbs as they began to flicker one day and then the function to the Light gor Somewhat wonky. I think i needa resloder Some components. Not Sure which ones though. Ps. Yes. You're correct that the bugs that bite definitely don't pay much mind to the Light. So it's probably counterintuitive to have this bulb Set Up for that reason imo. However, i have Seen a few female mosquito Stuck on the Zappers when i done Some maintenance every now and then. I just know Some aren't fooled, as one day i had to connect tje extension cord to my Lamp desk and chased the Skeeter around my Shed Swinging wildly tryin to make it fly through the bulb haha.

The ideal power factor is 1 (unity) that means the current and voltage are in perfect sync. Usually only achieved with simple resistive loads like tungsten lamps and heaters.
Power factor is to do with devices having capacitance or inductance, rather than being pure resistors. Inductive and capacitive loads in an AC circuit cause the current and voltage waveforms to get out of synch with each other by a certain angle. The power factor value is a measure of how much the current and voltage waveforms differ . PF=cos(theta), where theta is the angle by which current differs from voltage. A power factor of 1 would mean that the load is purely resistive or that any inductance and capacitance cancel each other out. You can also start to get into things like reactive and apparent power that can affect circuit design. It's not usually an important consideration for household devices, but is important for industrial applications because power companies don't like low power factors.
And people will use these with es to b22 adapters there by getting phase directly on the outer mesh. Got a similar one here to play with. Since it's on an rcd and you have to intentionally put your finger I it I call good enough but not something to put in a lamp where a child can reach. As a 3year old I pulled a night light partly out the wall and dropped a 4 inch nail across phase and neutral on a socket with rewritable fuses. Big flash bang lol. One of my first memories lol. Half diameter of nail bunt into prongs of the plug. Old style nz without insulating sleeves. I'm sure one of these lights would be rely entertaining to some 3yo.
Considering it's a chinese product. The 400 v capacitor is probably a misprint that they got for cheap in bulk lowering their costs. Which would explain their use in a location where you'd imagine that it would fail.
What video editing software are you using on android? And can it cut and join clips. Im using shotcut freeware on pc , but it requires me to mess about getting the footage from my phone to my pc .
Almost true. However, female mosquitoes need blood for their eggs. Males don't, so they don't bite. One of the many odd things which can be learned from TV nature shows -- and Big Clive, of course.
Female mosquitoes are silent and bite to provide food to lay eggs but the males, who also make that high pitched noise (to attract a mate), don't bite. So don't worry about the noisy ones!
The volume being low imo is not really a problem - as long as it is consistent. We can just turn up the volume if needed. Other channels often have some really loud sound in between so you would blast your ears if you made it louder.
ABaumstumpf You can only turn up so far... A lot of other channels I watch are too low, and I struggle to hear them if I prop my phone/tablet in a stand or against a wall.
KJBowen2204 My first ever soldering iron was an Antex XS25 which I got when I was 15 - the year was 1984! I still have it and it works fine. You may struggle with certain soldering jobs due to the relatively low power of 25 Watts, especially with the trend of building large ground planes into PCB's. You may find a Chinese import temperature regulated iron gives better results and spares (including tips) are very cheap too.
my mosquito zapper made in china works very well. buy the kind that has two fluorescent lamps which emits blue color light. kills a lot of mosquitoes. but have to clean often to remove dead mosquitoes that got stuck between grills.
I don't do a lot of editing but on Android I use an app called Cyberlink Powerdirector, has all the basic functionality and can output in SD, 720 & 1080p, worked fine for everything I tried.
My Zapplight still works on the bug zapping part, but the light doesn't work anymore and if it does decide to work,it flashes on and off and it will not stay on.I have never heard it zap a bug,but the blue light is pretty, but this light is not worth a darn unless you have something blocking it from the outdoor elements and if you do what good is the big zapper part?It will just be hidden behind something where the bugs will not really be able to kill/zap them.I really think my boyfriend wasted $20 or whatever he paid for this bulb. Now by this video it is very nice, but if you buy one,you better have a covered porch. Now I have a bug light and no light to leave on for when I come back home at night.

Keep the fresh webs and dust away the old ones. ;)
May be Google translate can do that translation properly now, but just thought to roughly translate the data sheet bottom 6 lines, it says something like:
Typical application: R1=R2=10O when 0.3s
I can't find any Hopi meters on eBay but Aliexpress has them for £42.
So where's that 172V sourced from?
The biting ones (mostly female mosquitoes) are mostly attracted to the CO2 we breathe out, with other factors, like body heat and smell, having some effect too, but CO2 is good bait. Some good bug zappers take advantage of this, or you can add an acid to a base (vinegar and bicarbonate of soda is a classic safe one) to get the same gas to attract mosquitoes.
Hey BigClive, thanks for another fun video. Where did you get this item??
IR or even just a warm resistor would do a better job at attracting biting bugs. They find you by both scent and body heat
The bitey bastards are drawn in by carbon dioxide. I've seen good traps created by a cut in half bottle with vinegar and baking soda in.
But if the bottle's cut in half surely the vinegar and baking soda would fall out?
And the flicker with heat
one thing that attracts biting insects is a compound called 1-octen-3-ol, found in sweat and the oils produced by the skin
"Kill A Watt" meters are everywhere.... not sure how accurate they are but if you're near a harbor freight you can score one same day no shipping if you really need one
I looked for the Hopi on eBay and found ear candles! No doubt used for reading in bed.
Omg dude i Love the break down of the circuitry but holy Smokes ya killing me with the popping open of the bulb x) they Screw off. Except for the bottom cables ofc. Unless mine's' are different model, which i wouldn't know much but Still gaves me anxiety Seeing the popping off apart the Sections Lol
I've been Looking to fix my bilbs as they began to flicker one day and then the function to the Light gor Somewhat wonky.
The Hopi looks to be very handy. Never seen one before..
What about a field trial at chez Clive although I don't think there are any flies on you!
Are there any circuit apps like everycircuit? Everycircuit kind of sucks..
HOPI meters are still available on aliexpress by the look of it.
Hi there Clive, I just have one question. How high is the voltage/current when the zapper circuit is triggered?
+dandel351 When shunted the current is limited by the capacitor in series, so it's very low.
Ok thanks for the reply Clive. I'm loving your videos mate! Cheers.
Clive... everytime you increase the exposure, the HOPI meter stops hopping !!
Where did.you get the "HOPI" Clive?
The calculator is quite hard to read, do you have a bigger one? :U
Contact lenses my friend - contact lenses.
Zeedijk Mike, Can you type in a bigger font? lölölö
Arno nümuss The photos that Clive uses are not clear. Can you ask him to switch to A0 sized paper?
gorillaau Nope, A0 be too small !!1eleven
Big clive quote of the day. "I quite like thus as an open side case, have all the live circuitry poking out the side; that's pointless."
put a bunch of neon indicator lamps in that empty case, or a bunch of those flicker candle things, it look pretty cool
Dunno what you've done, but the audio is so much better in this video compared to others recently. Well done. EDIT just heard your comment about RUclips's new edit function. It works!
So what's a good power factor and bad I have a kill a watt but no instructions
The ideal power factor is 1 (unity) that means the current and voltage are in perfect sync. Usually only achieved with simple resistive loads like tungsten lamps and heaters.
where do you buy this lamp?
Do they make zappers with infrared LEDs?
You could swap 'em.
_You_ could swap 'em. Most of us are stuck with what we get. ;)
I understand volts amps watts etc but could you explain power factor plz
swansealoaf1999 Watts = power factor X volts X amps
Actually John is correct that in a complex load Watts=pf*V*I.
Apparent power (VA) is simply V*I
they sell those in a chain store in the us called freds and looked very similer
Great improvement in your audio!!
AndroVid Pro. It lets you merge (join) clips and trim them too.
bigclivedotcom will see how i do with the free version , befor splashing out £1.89 on pro.
I wouldn't worry about the volume. I have mine set to about 1/4 of the volume slider. Otherwise it blasts me out.
I wish Clive used the power meter that he used to use in his older videos. The flickery HOPI meter is not meant for videos.
I think the female mosquitoes like to attack humans, the male ones just want a quiet life LOL :-D
Now that's funny right there.
zalmaflash
He he and it's true :-D
Almost true. However, female mosquitoes need blood for their eggs. Males don't, so they don't bite. One of the many odd things which can be learned from TV nature shows -- and Big Clive, of course.
Girls just wanna have fun .. boys just wanna have sex.
Female mosquitoes are silent and bite to provide food to lay eggs but the males, who also make that high pitched noise (to attract a mate), don't bite. So don't worry about the noisy ones!
What software are you trying out Clive?
AndroVid.
The volume being low imo is not really a problem - as long as it is consistent. We can just turn up the volume if needed.
Other channels often have some really loud sound in between so you would blast your ears if you made it louder.
ABaumstumpf
You can only turn up so far... A lot of other channels I watch are too low, and I struggle to hear them if I prop my phone/tablet in a stand or against a wall.
The PCB of that bulb is Direct on board ..the aluminium PCB is mirical and dimmable
Don't change the audio
Is it too loud now?
no it is perfect, he meant don't change it back the way it used to sound.
It's perfect! It's wonderful! *insert more positive adjectives here*
9:06... There is nothing wrong with the Audio volume although a bit less Bass and a bit more Treble wouldn't hurt... ;)
"Hello, Help Desk. Have you tried turning it off and on ... and off and on .... and off and on again?"
Forget high voltage circuits for killing insects, just do it like i did, stick a few leds in a tilapia tank and they will eat all night!
Whats your opinion on the antex xs25?
KJBowen2204
My first ever soldering iron was an Antex XS25 which I got when I was 15 - the year was 1984! I still have it and it works fine. You may struggle with certain soldering jobs due to the relatively low power of 25 Watts, especially with the trend of building large ground planes into PCB's. You may find a Chinese import temperature regulated iron gives better results and spares (including tips) are very cheap too.
Sir can you please tear down DOB led bulb
You need the flicker to attract them bloodsuckers.. I tried with a full bridged rectifier and it didnt catch shieet..
my mosquito zapper made in china works very well. buy the kind that has two fluorescent lamps which emits blue color light. kills a lot of mosquitoes. but have to clean often to remove dead mosquitoes that got stuck between grills.
Brennstuhl has some meters that can do everything the hopi can for a low price very good devices
I like the lamp holder I got the orange one !
I don't do a lot of editing but on Android I use an app called Cyberlink Powerdirector, has all the basic functionality and can output in SD, 720 & 1080p, worked fine for everything I tried.
splendid video clive
My Zapplight still works on the bug zapping part, but the light doesn't work anymore and if it does decide to work,it flashes on and off and it will not stay on.I have never heard it zap a bug,but the blue light is pretty, but this light is not worth a darn unless you have something blocking it from the outdoor elements and if you do what good is the big zapper part?It will just be hidden behind something where the bugs will not really be able to kill/zap them.I really think my boyfriend wasted $20 or whatever he paid for this bulb. Now by this video it is very nice, but if you buy one,you better have a covered porch. Now I have a bug light and no light to leave on for when I come back home at night.
audio sounds as loud or louder than many channels, granted I am listening on a workstation with 7.1 setup, listening in 2.1 mode, so lots of bass from subwoofer :)
You could always still use the Google translate website and send that PDF through there. Or copy&paste the Chinese text from the PDF into the website. Or use a PC ;)
Good tip, I have done that for a manual! Worked great :)
