Italy in the decades right after the end of the WWII had some of the best songs and movies in the entire Europe. Neo-realism was something that touched people everywhere. There was always a very humane touch in Italian movies. Italy had great actors and producers as well as great stories told in movies. I grew up watching all thse Italian movuies of th e40's, 50's and 60's. More recent date I saw a great Italian movie which was also as touching as this one. The name is "Cinema Paradiso'.
What a wonderful scene of this film. Ricci is so shattered, so broke he can't even allow himself the chance to sit and enjoy a meal with his son. And poor Bruno -- he's at that funny stage in childhood where you can sense something is wrong without really understanding what it is -- Italian Neorealism was excellent at capturing moments like this.

The subtitles are terrible, a lot of lines are either missing, wrong or completely invented. Especially at 2:05, the man says "Ma noi famo quello che ce pare!" which means "But we do whatever we want!". "Because we're both men" is NOT said at all, yet it appears in the subtitles

Non ho vissuto nel dopoguerra,ho solo 15 anni,ma in fondo al cuor riesco a capire quello che hanno sofferto le persone,affamati,senza lavoro,senza soldi e quel ragazzino quando guardava quell'altro ragazzino che mangiava tutte quelle cose,mi faceva un po' tenerezza,ma intanto quel ragazzino è molto più forte di quell'altro perché lui ha imparato a vivere nella povertà.
beh posso immaginare, parlavo del fatto che comunque parla della nostra storia, non intendo che all'estero non possono dire che sia un bel film, ma prende nell'anima dell'italiano, perchè parla di noi, ovviamente non limitando il tutto descrivendo la sola povertà
The song, which is called "la Tamurriata Nera", hasn't anything racist in it. It recounts of a Neapolitan woman who, when Neaples was under American occupation, gives birth to a black child. This was very common in 1944 and many women had American lovers; many of them even went to the USA after the war, and many other American soldiers decided to stay in Neaples. The song isn't racist about the child, but rather tells about the surprise of some Neapolitans about this event, which was something that hadn't yet been seen.

At this time, people were not racist, they simply had a fear of the unknown and this was used by the allies. I forget the Frenchman's name, but he is quite famous for telling his soldiers that nothing would happen to them, should the women die as a result of this, and many did. The Morrocans in particular were 'recruited' from prisons etc. and were very violent. Google it.
De Sica si è divertito ed ha divertito il padre sarà orgoglioso, tranquillo, anche perchè non mi risulta che Christian abbia fatto male a qualcuno, Noi stiamo la sempre a giudicare, io non so come possiate diffondere cosi tanta negatività in giro senza nemmeno rendervi conto di quanto questo atteggiamento sia deleterio, o credi che serva a qualcuno o qualcosa ciò che hai detto? Mostri solo risentimento e probabilmente invidia verso qualcuno che si è goduto la vita, se fossi stato tu al suo posto probabilmente avresti fatto la stessa cosa, troppo facile giudicare la vita degli altri,guardiamo la nostra ogni tanto.

The English translation loses a bit. For instance, around 2:00 he says "Ce credesse tu' madre che te faccio beve" (="Your mother wouldn't believe I let you drink..." (meaning: he is quite worried of her reaction). And then "Ma noi famo quello che ce pare" (="But we do what we like"): there's no "..because we are both men", which is (maybe) only alluded. Anyway... great movie. How beautiful was Italy, how nice were Italians. Now, it's a place to sink in the Mediterranean sea, and forget.

I really like this scene. It emphasizes how destructive Antonio is to himself and other people. I also want to point out the nooses in his room too.
