Good video on adjusting the diff' linkage. Speaking as somebody who had to fit a linkage to enable the diff' lock on a Disco', it's surprising there aren't more "how to" video's about this on RUclips. Main thing, though, is it's absolutely bloody brilliant how you're teaching Ludy (sp?). He seems keen and you're letting him get stuck in, which is the best way to learn. If he sticks with it, even for a few months, he'll know more than most Landy owners ever do.
Just finished watching Uncle Paul with his Defender chassis change over at "Grump's Barn." What a good series and a great job he did on his own. Thanks for the recommendation. Oh yes, he was over the moon with his Blue Peter badge.
Mike thanks for the video on the diff lock it helped tremendously. I took my gearbox and transfer box on my 90 tdi out for a rebuild and put it back. Last weekend off road the centre diff light went off. So I readjusted as per your video and it's now perfect. I guess I didn't set up correctly. Keep up the great videos as I enjoy them a lot. All the best from South africa the rust free haven for landies
Tears, frustrations, sweat, scratched arms. Slippery spanners and bloody back ache. It's all in a days work that many customers never see or pay for. I was once that 'Brother in arms'. Well done you two lads.👍 As an ex fellow mechanic I salute you.🍺🍻🍺😃 Cheers.👍
Love your work young felahs,l enjoy working on my rare 4bd1 land rover county because you need limited tools. Saying that age is starting to get ontop of me so l need to work on my beast smarter. l was watching a review on the new land-rover defender and of the back the electrics started to fail on them the first day,its a problem with all 4wheel drives and the younger generation will have to learn more on how to overcome the electrics and the devices to fix it.
Had to have my starter fixed on my 4bd1T this week - bit of a faff on to get it off - sent it to the starter shop where they stripped it, lubed it up, replaced the solenoid plunger, tested AND brought it out to me for C$71 inc tax The dealer would probably charge me that for the parts alone..
That's one of those jobs that requires a lot of patience and the grey matter has to be fully engaged :). Bet you cant wait for the next Defender that comes in with the same symptoms!
Had the same job when the roller bearings in the front uj went kaput on an ex's 110 and difflock was needed to drive to pick up new ones without the front propshaft+exceeding speed recommended when engaged!
Hi mike I’ve been watching your channel for some time now , teaching myself the art of LR Maintinance 😀. It seems it’s a necessary once you become an owner. I have a 2003 LR discovery 4.6 L here in Portugal that I’m currently working on. Small jobs first. I’ve changed all the oils. Engine, differentials , gearbox and the gearbox filter. The issue I’m having is when I go from park into reverse you can hear it cluck into gear lightly. But when I change from drive to reverse the clunking noise is a Lot louder and harder. I’ve not only replaced the gearbox oil once but twice to gear as much new clean oil into the gearbox. I’ve checked a couple of times for leaks all’s good. I’d appreciate Any opinion. Keep up the good work on your channel.
I’ve just broken my second shitpart diff switch they just fall apart Mike, re ordered a Lucas one so fingers crossed this time . Like you removed the gearbox tunnel to get access
@@BritannicaRestorations it’s my own thankfully Mike I’ve had the gearbox tunnel in and out 3 times 😔 I’ve broken 2 Brit part ones ,the connectors just drop off they are absolute garbage,I’ve just ordered a Lucas one fingers crossed it’s better.
you said on a earlier video you could not move the motor as you had removed a propshaft, you can if you engage diff lock and it is then driveable with no adverse effect on the transmision and works whichever prop is missing Tony sneesby UK
It's been a while, but I believe you do - I see LHD and you have to remove the A/C to access 2 x stupid M6 nuts and bolts (I now fit captive nuts on the bottom of the heater blower bracket)
Question, I have a 1995 defender that I bought in southern spain. After spain, I plan on living in southern california. Would I need to have my chasis galvanized or am I going to be okay in california due to weather ? Thanks in advance.
I lived in So. Cal most of my life. Your chassis will outlive you, as is, in So. Cal weather, because there isn't any! Rust will be the least of your problems.
99.9 percent Toyota, .1percent LandRover. Don't know why but I still love my Landy, it gives me something to do...all the time. Near lost all my "mechanic skills" while I owned a LandCruiser...
hello mike, this set up does not surprise me, again clown designers on the 110, why didnt they base the seatpan and floor like the series 3 which the floor was easy to remove,
I had to say I shuddered when I saw his oily arms resting on the carpet. No polythene or paper to put down over it before leaning? That's gonna take some cleaning to bring em back up again!
@@BritannicaRestorations - _Really?_ Erm, I wasn't talking about cleaning the guys forearm! LOL! That's what Swarfega is for! - But on a serious note, My gawd! - I've looked up Coleman camping fluid on the old google thing. I never would have thougt you could use that to get oil out of carpets. Well, yes, if you pour it all over and set it alight - then, oily stains gone! - and so is the carpet..... Can we get a demo on a scrap piece? It is an upholsterers trick, I use it for cleaning fabrics and headliners - it is called white gas / Naptha over here - like a refined petrol but not oily

Yes - there is nothing like getting you hands dirty to learn mechanics - not quite the same in books!
Just finished watching Uncle Paul with his Defender chassis change over at "Grump's Barn." What a good series and a great job he did on his own.
Thanks for the recommendation.

Just popping over there now!
Loudi the new apprentice. He’s going to be a Landy guru in time. Great work.
Should see the task he is undertaking!

Great video as always - really helped me fix the diff-lock linkage on my Defender 👍
Great to hear!

Great job Mike - another job for me - but now I know what to do. Making Land Rovers better!
Glad to help!
The key is to screw the eye in and then work a little at a time out until correct
Problem is you have to undo it every time

Double time if it has AC!

Sounds as if it is an internal issue and I am not experienced in auto-boxes - sorry
Honestly Mike, as if anyone would believe that a simple job on a Landy could take hours and be a right pain!... :)
You have that right! Snow today!

nice one mike well done

Hey mike to remove the heater on a right hand side vehicle do you need to remove ac to access bolts for heater?
It's been a while, but I believe you do - I see LHD and you have to remove the A/C to access 2 x stupid M6 nuts and bolts (I now fit captive nuts on the bottom of the heater blower bracket)
@@BritannicaRestorations mike any videos on how remove ac on the defender?
Sorry no. There are a few different styles, but most require de-gassing to allow the unit to come out
Yep, that's a genuine R380 then, covered in oil and shit,
"LandRover, making roadside mechanics out their owners since 1948..."
Yeap!
Been doing that on my truck, it's an absolute nightmare to get bang on.
The phrase every DIYer says....."now where did I put that?"
So that diff lock leaver on the transfer case needs to be fully to the right (driving direction) to lock the diff right?
Fully left - it is written on the top of the knob!
Right is out of diff lock
Mike, can you get a false diff lock engagement? Can the light illuminate without the lock engaging?
I 'believe' it can, but only if the arm is not set right - when set correctly then no
Very interestings to kinn noo ..squadron leader ..😁😎
😅
Loudi you can change your mind, but ??
Good luck to Loudi Mike
lol!

Unless you are up in Washington State or maybe Oregon moisture issues with Defenders won't be an issue in Cali.
Probably not - but if you need rust to throw on your Rover and be like the rest of us here, then I have lots here in Quebec for free!

What a faff but a very useful video. I bet there are loads out there that are seized or not adjusted properly.
There are many seized up for lack of use

My td5 difflock light dont come on at all
