  • OBD2 CAN bus reader scanned P0720 for transmission output shaft speed sensor circuit failure. The check engine light was illuminated, the speedometer was not working and upshifts were slow and sluggish. The green overdrive off light was flashing. The OSS measures driveshaft rotations for spedo and odometer. Shaft RPM also controls shifting. On mine the wiring harness had broken wire. I found a rat's nest under hood and I assume the rat chewed through the cable. It was impossible to get hands up there to repair so transmission had to be lowered to gain access. Once fixed use OBDII code reader to scan bus and clear P720 CEL error. Could also get P0722 or P0731 DTC malfunction trouble readings for Insufficient Input.

Instead of gluing the bolt into the socket, put a small piece of masking tape over the head of the bolt and insert it in the socket. That will hold the bolt in the socket for you while you get it started and no mess to clean of your tools.

Or you can use a piece of a napkin, which is more common than masking tape )

I like to use the heat shrink tubing that has silicone inside when you heat the heat shrink it it activates the silicone and keeps the moisture out 👍

Rat: "Lets sneak up there between the tiny finger space where the output speed sensor wires are and chew on them!" WTF really?

I have had a few other issues with rats chewing through wires as well. I keep a lot of rat poison bait stations all over the property but they still find a way to damage my cars.

Just wondering, did you put Jack stands or at least a steel rim under the car before you climbed under? A Crown Victoria will crush you like a bug!😱

Not to rain on your parade, but if you clear the codes and don't run the car through a drive cycle, you really don't know if it was fixed, because it could come back.

How long is the drive cycle? I replaced both sensors on my transmission and it comes back if I disconnect the battery. But if I clear the code with my scanner it drives fine but my speedometer still doesn't work. Do I have to complete the drive cycle before my speedometer starts to work again?

Just had this code come up for my 2008 Ford Fusion. Had a guy at O'Reilly's tell me that it's the whole transmission that was failing, which freaked me out. Is it possible to just replace the speed sensor, or is it recommended to repair the whole transmission? I know jack about cars.

    • @KentDiego

Just the speed sensor needs replacement. My video show how. The guy at O'Reilly's is working at minimum wage for a reason.
