Let us know your thoughts!
#POPcast
I think Hip-hop is currently going through a transition where the listeners are getting a bit older and moves on from your "A-list" artists. Artists like Nasty-C are killing it because his fans are his peers and they are still young and growing with him.
Another thing is we need to realise that hip-hop is not the genre that connects naturally to our streets. It has Kwaito, House...Basically Dance music. So whenever House/Amapiano or Qhom are at their best, hiphop gets left behind. The South African music industry always gears up for December and the expectation is that a Dance song will be song of the year regardless of how successful hiphop was . So if Dance music is at its best during the year, Hiphop will naturally take a backseat. We are a dance nation and that's a fact. What Hiphop needs right now is unity. All this separation of camps is hurting the genre. We miss the days of Amantombazane Remix

facts, most these niggas be dropping some bullshit on a daily
Listen to Luigi The First - The First EP
Oh shit bro, that's actually true!
Social Media Clout Got People thinking they made it while the streets don't know any Of their music , they must push Across all platforms like the previous Cats who put SA Hip Hop on Top Flight
Linda Nzuzo I know it’s only been 1 hour, but this is a very underrated comment
Linda Nzuzo no doubt! You think we too relaxed?
@@DJVigilanteSA Yeah that too , people don't Promote like before , after they trend on Twitter and hit n.o 1 on iTunes they just relax , Not everyone is on Social media and also good music will speak for itself

Bro your comment is pure truth . it's like hip hop artists these days are more concerned about trending on all these social media platforms and appearance , trying to look rich and sounding the same. It is high time people wake up hip hop is slowing moving downwards.
it's hard to see Hip-Hop as a growing genre when new artists are duplicates of existing artists in the industry.
100%
A million percent right
Thanks Scoop for supporting Malume with that shirt, local forever.

Maybe what SA Hip Hop needs right now is new faces
Can I be one though?
new faces is me, I am new faces
It's funny bro hearing these guys talking about sticking together, new faces needed & putting on young kids.. where's you've tried many times to reach all these guys on the Vid and some even blocked you. So about the new faces forget my bro .. SA celebrities don't want that.

What I've noticed about South African music as a whole is that it's seasonal every genre get it fair chance to dominate for that 2/3 years then another genre takes over, 90s to early 2000 it's Kwaito then came Afro-soul rocked the scene more than Kwaito for few years then Durban Kwaito was born it dominated for few years with Afro-soul artists also dropping hits in between those years of Durban Kwaito domination then in 2014 till 2017 SA Hiphop took off almost every hip hop track dropped by SA artist became an instant hit and anthem in the hood in that period whether venac or straight English joint until Qgom came shut SA hip hop hype down for 3 years and now it amapiano's chance to get a slice of the cake, maybe not this year or next year but the cycle continues and SA Hiphop will rise again like 2014 whether the sound is American or not
This speaks a lot on the concept of brain drain as well. We need to value our backgrounds and not just use them for sound bites and trends. People wanna appeal to the states and get deals or sponsors!
Yeah.. It's almost like we forgot what brought our Hiphop to the forefront. There was unity and a sense of everyone pushing for the same goal. Guys supported each other. Immediately when the game elevated niggas started to split and chase the "bag"
I echo Speedsta's Sentiments 90- 100 Vibe and Vernac was the formula .. even the Ambitiouz era of hits had that African Trap Vibe , something ALL South Africans could relate to
listen to KOs current album thats our sound thats mzansi hip hop not this trap and whatever it is Casper is doing with amapiano
Hip hop is dying coz y'all expect the next hit to be from cassper,Aka or Nasty c. You not listening to the other cats don't even play their songs on radio 🤷🏾♂️
Miss Cosmo, The issue is that we treat Hip Hop as Hip Hop. That's cool but we treat it like a neighbor down the street as opposed to something that is our lives and something we live by. Vigi responded with the same point. We need to live Hip Hop. not just the dress code or the hazy trap that dies in a day.
I think seeing the meteoric rise of SA Hip Hop in recent years, the sudden growth has set the perspective that SA Hip Hop will always be on a rapid growth tangent. That is not the case, what we are witnessing now is what comes after the buzz, the rapid growth, the hype which is maturity. SA Hip Hop is maturing to be a main stay genre, and normally longevity comes with consistent quiet growth as opposed to rapid growth. We were just too accustomed to the sudden growth that when we witness the genre maturing we believe it is going nowhere fast.
FAACTS!!!! SUSTAINABLE GROWTH
The thing with Old cats(2014/15) era want to make hip hop for everyone even those who don't listen to hip hop so they improvise , The new wave makes music for those who actually listen to the genre and yes we were always been a small population but now we are growing, thou with a small fraction but we are its all about building and building till we hit the peak , Clout aint go get us anywhere ... PERIOD 😤
Emtee is definitely one of the few new school kids that is relatable. You don't relate to eMtee's music because it's vernac you relate because he raps about what we are currently going through in the hood, village and even city. That's what's made him have 5 year old kids singing along his music.
By the way i don't support this Kwaito sound in Hiphop. Again I'll make eMtee an example he doesn't rap on Kwaito beats nor remixing old Kwaito songs but he got hits that are relatable to the young and the old. Hiphop is Hiphop not Kwaito let it shine on its own. Let's try to do South African hiphop like Emtee.. Zulu boy did it too. We ain't gotta turn this culture into Kwaito let's grow it
DAWG! Emtee is the fucking future. Ambitiouz really stunted his growth. Dude will soar if he gets a well-oiled machine behind him.
well said bro, i agree 100%
Vigi low-key always got valid points. Speak up more, big bro. 🙏
Thembinkosi Ndwandwe will do T! Thanks 🙏🏿
It is very sad to see SA HIP HOP going through this , I genuinely Love the culture and support it every possible way I can. I urge every SA HIP HOP fan out there to play their part and let us make HIP HOP the it thing again 😭😭😭😭😭
Energy is never destroyed it's only transferred, the genres will all get shine, including subgenres alike. We all have influences and we spend our time expressing them in our own lives, the energy transfer. Hip Hop wasn't big at one point and then it blew up, Kwaito, qghom, house. All our genres get their time in the sun, as well as the moon. Each side needs to keep creating during the challenging times are the growth times, they are inevitable, and just as important as the reward times. I personally am grateful to even take part in it, in whatever way I am. And am greatful the culture exists, in these quiet times, it's time to get back to the lab. And the networking, and the connecting. #risemzansi #thestorytellingsonofafrica
Highly anticipated podcast! 💥💣
Emtee is a GOAT, he has multiple hits he is already in my South African Greatest Rappers/Musicians of All Time list.
How many of us need a series-long 24 hour episode?
Kidding.. but dope content thou😅
Whenever me & my homies talk about the media industry in SA I always say, we as a country always "maintain" what is currently popping. Whenever something new comes around immediately 20+ people do that same thing. 808 slides where never a thing until Eestbound came around & most producers started using them in their beats. So very few artists in the game are willing to be experimental & develop something unique but when one does, everybody does it. Thats why i feel like Speedsta's point about SA Hip Hop going nowhere slowly makes sense. Nothing's new out there, its the same ol' shit all the time.
Artists in SA (most of them) have a very formulaic approach to music ever since trap became a thing. I definitely feel like the music isn't diverse enough to truly establish a dominant music scene here in SA. Even in other genres there's a huge lack of innovation. It just seems to me music in SA is treated like trending topics, the minute something else gets buzz, we leave the old & hop on that new bandwagon because when everyone talks about it, we want to become part of the conversation.
This was long ass rant, I apologize. I am a producer by the way & friends of mine dropped a new song last week, if you can spare a listen, I'd like to know if a sound like this could provide a different perspective on how experimentation could evolve the SA Hip Hop sound. Thank you.

Vigi is always is on point.
Yess bcoz he doesn't talk too much like the others
I disagree with some things generally because I've heard a South African artist which I can relate to who goes by the name Luigi The First. He dropped his EP on the 17th of September and the EP is filled with Purity and honesty and because I got to catch his music when he started, I love how he has progressed and how he's starting to gain loyal fans. I feel like the industry especially Radio, does influence the culture. I feel like artists that are being put on are sounding more american influenced and that will always bring us back to the feeling that our Industry is going nowhere.
The hits really weren't transcending this year at all... A lot of important point were made tonight I'm happy I hope these artists are listening because thina siReady give us hits that sounds familiar you can talk your talk on some lit sound we not asking you to change your words or experience maybe the deliverance.
It’s tough that’s why I hardly turn up anymore . The music I wana hear it’s only on my phone and RUclips 😏
Neo Ramaphoko and that music is mostly international
Magleradoeboy is gonna save the game, watch 🤞🏿❤
This guy that I'm wearing. Scoop for president!!!!!!.
The SA Hip Hop Scene is lacking uniqueness. Everyone sounds the same and monotonous. Hip Hop DJs need to dig for more new sounds and stop going the safe route of playing music from their famous friends. We outchea killing real and authentic music, if you really wanna revive our dearest culture check us out and hit us up.
Scoop is always on point
Vigi puts it well, amapiano represent SA current youth and street culture. The current SA Hip hop talks to American youth lives in SA and like Cassper said don't do music for rappers, do it for fans
Song : On my own (Remix)
Artist : HHP, Mr Selwyn, Slikour
Age gap is causing the disconnect. I'm a 32 year old and I can't relate to what these kids are saying in their music. I therefore cannot spend my hard earned money on their music or shows as I would on the likes of Kwesta, Zola etc. I can't relate to this whole "I'm depressed and hate my life" wave. I've got goals to reach and a life to live so I'll stick to the OGs
Remember when one of the hip pop artist said, "Hip Pop used to write bars and now we just dab" (or something like that) and I remember also that Areece said, "Right now Hip Pop is Kwaito put in closed brackets, how did that happen?".
I think the problem is also with some of these hip pop artists man like their sound is not solid hard hip pop anymore. Like i understand as an artist you want to evolve and grow but then it becomes a problem because the essence of hip pop and hard bars with dope beats gets lost.
Scoop ninomona izokhulu kanjan i hip hop yaseMzansi mxm😏
Noni looks at Speedsta like she's both fascinated and wants to slap him at the same time.
Not say we should be impressing the international audience but when you look at RUclips reactors reacting to South African music they like the gqom, Amapiano the 2014/15 hip hip because it's new and different to them its authentic to SA. So maybe going back to that sound is what SA hip hop needs
Big Facts Here. No surprise the biggest bangers in the hiphop/r&b are from oSjava and Blaq Diamond.
One thing: if you have never lived by it, you can never be about it. You can't expect all these young dudes coming up to now rap in vernac when they themselves didn't start off rapping in vernac. Hip Hop is very distinct and if you try to do something that isn't of your nature we will pick up on it via music. Why don't we ever talk about Stogie T or Proverb whenever we have a conversation about how rappers aren't proud of their heritage?
Yeah bro, Ms Cosmo can get it🔥🔥🔥 RAW!!!!
Welcome Mntungwa grow up
awe
Cassper is doin SA and that is why he's doin good but y'all ain't recognizing
We need Riky here as a special guest
cassper just gave us sweet and short. gets gets 2.0, who got the block hot, hase mo states... y'all just sleeping on the guy's work.
In this podcast forget, they can never give him his props.
@@mxomzanywa3738 exactly my point, and what they dont realize is that Cass keeps on growing higher with or without their approvals.
We relate.. we are just a few relating .. give us another 20 years and its all US motivated hip hop with alot of kids going crazy to it.
I dont see any1 standing up for hiphop but the reality is in the hiphop its different coz the appreciation of the art depends on hit tracks but not great music so the momentum lacks before 2pac can record a song and today u will still listen to it so if we keep an eye to great music we will keep the momentum of hiphop for generations
And Im here to save it
Yess Ms Cosmo... Dope Comments.

I just love dj Speedsta❤️❤️❤️
The local sounds are always the ones that make me keen to listen, honestly I don't get the urge to listen to trap sounds
I truly relate to this topic, but let me just say khona into ezayo
Thanks for giving emtee the credit
I wish you guys talked about Focalistic and what hes doing right now with South African hip hop, its relatable and dope as fuck but anyway great episode guys.
Thanks Scoop for saying it, 'Kwaito'. I was about to say just say it guys, its not 'Isigubhu'
props to the audio engineer
Few weeks back on Twitter there was #SAhiphopneedayouCassper to save the sinking ship of hip hop
EMTEE is an OG
How?
What's an OG?
Yall inspiring❤️
I think Sa just needs to give new people a chance. We don't give new artists a chance. I've seen it where good music from an artist that doesn't have a big name in Sa be slept on because he's not big. We just want hits from the artists that are already big. Let's give the young kids a chance and listen to their music and give them a chance to blow up. The music industry won't go anywhere if we're not making good artists break into the industry. If we let the same artists move the industry forward what will happen when we no longer like the direction they are heading in
Clearly people don't know what they want, Casper's Sweet and Short is what is clearly relatable to mzansi, then you get people saying it's not hip hop/rap eintlik hip hop rap fans are the most confused hence the culture is not moving forward,I'm a house head but this what I observe looking into hip hop rap
but honestly speaking if American Hiphop artists are still charting top 10 in SA, i dont see anything wrong with South Africans trying to sound American or rap in English
Dankie mfethu👌
I've five drinks for you.
Speedsta: Cool, i will take two.
HIPHOP as whole is going down.
Genre's such as amapiano and gqom will always do better than hip-hop because it originates in our country, Hip-Hop is a foreign thing as much as we have the coolest rappers amapiano and gqom will forever kill hip-hop especially in the clubs.
Plus how can you go global, thru vanac? Name one artist, please...?
Always legit!!!
This place is dope. Ikephi la??
For me SA hiphop died when the so called top 5, started singing and not rapping on way too many songs
nice1 scoop🔥🔥🔥
Dope eps!!!
Its time to let everything live
Man, I don't know hey it just sometimes seems like hip pop artists are maybe uninspired like hip pop now is not the same. Right now when we listen to hip pop tracks we listen to them as "throwback tracks" and think "damn, remember when this song came out". Like i know there has been hip pop tracks which were dropped but it just does not sound the same, like i miss those days were we could rap hip pop lyrics word for word at a club or concert. Right now haii... its like hop pop retired for a while so hopefully it will have a strong come back.
I think yini eninga relate to this new Trap. seniba dala bafwethu.
I think the mentioned artists; OkMalumKoolKat and Kwesta, might bring back the sound.
25K saving S.A Hip Hop
Afonso Tshepo I fux with him HARD!
do we have an issue with english rap?
ShyGuy Terence no as I’ve said it before you don’t have to rap in other languages to make it.
I believed that sounds cant be saved, each one must go through its self or shelf life
Some of the newschool kids live for our South African culture....but o.G's don't give us a chance....
Vigi is right..
Today's hip-hop is not relatable
How old are you?
Kearabetswe Ntsane here’s my thing at the same time there are gems out there that we are lacking to find or explore. But yes maybe we are too cool for people right now, maybe we’re not talking the same language as people.
@@DJVigilanteSA We lack in originality. Especially the "new school". They're tryna emulate the working formulae in the States, but the thing is we're not in the States.
06:33...ereng Dj Vigi a bue tuu - Aowa!
Lenkoe Gafane what I was meant to say the DJs also sound the same!
@@DJVigilanteSA : Agreed, S.A is developing country & the Capitalist-Economy affects creative arts
- DJs allign their creativity to suit trending type of sound
- Some DJs opt to mimic trend-setters, than being original hoping to accelarate their careers faster
- Most composers use the same Music Softwares with the same presets (again, creativity is squashed)
I hope one day discuss possible solutions to Piracy & Lawlessness in Music
truth yall have a point its hard to relate with yalls now..
Let's start our own so Brooklyn challenge.
We definitely miss the ''old sgubhu'' sound.
come 2 cape town 3t
Since Hip Hop is not just 1 element (MCing/Rapping). We need to recognize and discuss other elements too. What happening kwi-graffiti, b-boy/breakdancing, beatboxing, DJing etc? I hope ningaxoxa ngawo since they are part of the culture. Most people think hip hop is just rap, you know. Hip Hop is not about rappers, beatboxers were there for us kuma-cipher. It's funny 'cause maybe most SAns know beatboxing because of The Soil. Yet it's rappers who used to have beatboxers kuma-cipher, kwaphelela lapho. 😬
Everyone is trapping now...all the "popping" cats are trappers. beats, flow, alless nje... & everyone is singing yhooo
'i wana hop in a coupe' is all we trying to say these days in our music as hip hop artists. lets talk about what we going through, what we eat, where you 'really' chill and stop swearing too much. we really acting too cool.
I feel it’s because most artists are not what type of sound they on.... every new artist has a new sound and they would have a name for it.... yet again he is js few months in ..... anyway let get it...., Trust
Logically is it not piano time? coz music changes all the dammm time
Problem is that hip hop artists don't want to work together.. Most artist think that are too cool, and they are better than the next artist
Okay gentlemen, it's my duty to compliment Ms. Cosmo.
If we depend on the artists that grew up on kwaito/iSgubu to save the game now then what will happen in 5-10 years when they are retired. Kwaito is no longer popular so the Kids got nothing but international Hip-Hop inspiring them. Scary times for the game!!
Shit sorry for forgetting the beast
SHANE EAGLE 😭🔥
Can I ask what do you guys think about 25k wearing red bandanas acting like a Blood in his video?
One thing fosho a dj and an mcee an't the same ,djs are looking forward on playing hits lol but us hip hop heads we want raps not all of us attend clubs ,plz mzansi lyricism siyanicela yho🙏
the real reason hip hop is not going anywhere is because there is a lack of OG's giving upcoming artist co signs
never gonna be unity in Sa Hip Hop as a consumer you got to scout your faves n support them because of the vibe they bring and never make their personal issues yours just enjoy their vibe and buy whatever is worth your money
S/O TO EMTEE_ He's truly the best
AKA is SA Hip-hop 😍😗MEGACY laba abanye fusegan
That really rest hour bro
In the states it's gone full circle its going back to the essence guys like westside Gunn, benny the butcher, Conway, roc Marciano, so be patient hip hop is not dying its getting ressurected again, the fruity pop hip hop(Lil xans, xx tentacion) is dead its back to what it's allways been HIP HOP.
