  • Comparing two popular Tecsun analogue radios on a weak and a strong shortwave signal. It is the BBC from Ascension Island, 21630 kHz, and Ifrikya FM on 21550 kHz from Bechar, Algeria, compared on the Tecsun R-909 and the Tecsun R9012. The BBC signals is strong, Ifrikya FM is weak. On the strong signal there is a clear winner, on the weak signal it is not so clear. Received in Johannesburg, South Africa.

I have both. The 909 seems a bit more sensitive than the 9012 and had a nicer speaker tone . More mellow and less hiss. Pity it misses out on one important HF band

Hi Rob, yes, I also think the R-909 is a bit more sensitive. It is indeed, a pity that it misses out on the 60m band, and also the 75m band.

Thank you! I think all three those radios you have are great radios, I still want to get myself a D-368, I have heard many good things about it. But one day when you want to get a new radio, I would certainly suggest trying one of the Tecsun radios, depending on what your needs are.

Interesting comparision, thanks. I have both too now, just got my R-909. I'm quite positively impressed so far. I shall give it a real testing during one of my countryside DX outings over this long week-end (Bastille Day tomorrow). I'll compare it with my D-219 and R-9012.
It seems to be quite a lovable little radio and a very decent performer on SW.

I agree, the R-909 is a really nice little radio. But I got a second set a few weeks ago. Long story - lost package, replacement sent, first order finally arrived ... I only opened and tested the second version this week and I was deeply disappointed. it was just poor across all bands, except FM. So now I am beginning to understand why some people really like this radio, and others do not. Seems like there is no proper quality control, some sets perform really well, others not at all... If you are lucky, you get the good one. If not, well, then you are stuck with a bad radio. I am planning to show this in a future video.

@@swlistening Hello André, I'm back commenting this video because I've received the latest addition to my unreasonably large collection of radios. It's a DR-920C which basically is a R-9012 with a digital LCD display which is quite handy to know what you're listening to. I've only given it a short try on my balcony at 6:30PM using its whip antenna and I'm totally impressed by the numerous catches of very distant stations. Especially in these conditions far from optimal (time, location).
If you still have some cash to burn for a cheap radio, I recommend this one!

@@F4LDT-Alain Thank you for this Alain, it sounds like a really nice little radio. A little analogue radio with a digital display, I can just imagine how much fun that would be. @@swlistening Hum... seems that another reply of mine has vanished. I had told you that I have got it from Ali at 26 euros, free shipping and VAT included.
I wrote that I would make a mini-shootout between the R-9012 and the DR-920C. I've done this today, 6-8PM SWL session at my current favourite high point touching Paris. Definitely a way much better time than at night these days. Well, they're almost on par. The DR-920C seems to be a bit more selective (narrower b/w?). However the precise frequency display on the LCD makes a world of difference, especially when when the frequency scale on my R-9012 is so widely off on most bands.

@@F4LDT-Alain Thanks Alain, I just don't get it, why some comments just vanish ...
I think I will put the DR-920C on my list. I have never actually used Ali Express, maybe it is time to try. The DR-920C really sounds like exactly what I want right now, a good little real analogue with digital display. You are so right about the frequency display on the R9102, it really is WAY off.
About the DXing time, I also seem to have a lot of luck around early evening, about an hour or so before my local sunset, until about an hour or so after sunset. Seems to be a very good time for listening right now. I enjoy it, I don't always like to stay up very late at night for DXing. Sometimes I need to wake up quite early for work 🙂

@@swlistening Andre. If you're considering an R9700DX I'd be careful. I've had one for a while. It's certainly sensitive, has a nice large dial and light and great audio. But..... some have some nasty problems. Mine had a very stiff side tuning knob making it very difficult to tune HF signals. If I managed it would often jump off the freq due to backlash. Another RUclipsr had the same problem and suggested I disassemble it and restring it. OH. BOY. It was quite fiddly and tried to weaken the tension springs and eventually restrung the cord around a different pulley. Then reassemble all the dial mechanism. 😁It's real smooth now.
Also it had several heterodyne 'whistles' on different HF bands. Maybe some poor alignment or insufficient filtering related to the dual conversion. Be really nice if you could try one 1st to make sure the tuning problem isn't there. Otherwise a nice receiver.

Is the R909 Better than the Shiuadon(or other brands labeled as) R-108 or D-808? I prefer the one with rechargeable batteries, as normal AA batteries are quite expensive. if you already tested these radios I mentioned, is it worth the extra price, or is the R909 just as capable as these other radios I mentioned? thanks.

Hi Gabriel, I responded to another comment of yours about this, so just briefly, the D-109 is definitely a good radio, it is better than the R-909 and not as expensive as the D-808.
