    Amen Rev. Keller! I truly enjoyed watching both you and Mr. Stevenson expound on grace, mercy and truth. I truly wished I found you as a pastor a couple of years ago. It's been a huge burden the past two years , being a professing believer among evangelicals who refuse to speak up against injustices. Great speech and I agree with nearly everything you said. I particularly agree we should mark various sites so that they remain a memorial to those who died and we must reflect be humble and admit these atrocities happened and we cannot as a people allow them to happen again. This being said this needs to come from the Church not the Govt side. The Govt needs to hang their heads in shame as they were heavily involved throughout time in slavery. They need to quit preaching and start repenting!!! They love to shake their finger now and say hey you are white you should be ashamed. I'm not because I wasn't a slave owner...and you weren't a slave!. The Govt allowed slavery encouraged slavery participated every step of the way. And now suddenly and without explanation the Govt is claiming higher ground they've exonerated themselves patting themselves on the back because they finally grew a conscience. If we are going to heal this nation we are going to have to get real in this nation. The men and women who run this country, Govern this country are a small elite clique. You trace the group up there and their roots go back to owning slaves and exploiting people for their own gain power control and money is their God. Its who they are...its in their DNA they don't work! They exploit others work. They lie cheat steal murder rape etc., and then they try to put their guilt on me. Wrong! I'm not having that! We can come together and heal as soon as people who are in control are forced to look in the mirror and admit they are NOT trying to do the work of Jesus on this planet. They are the problem NOT the solution.

    EJI is one of the organizations I would send money to if I were not already providing support for several community organizations for the poor and homeless in my hometown. EJI gets a 100% score on Charity Navigator btw. Frankly the necessity of Jesus followers to give "with hilarity" of the bounty we've been given is such an obvious foundation of faith that I wonder why it needs to be repeated as often as it is from pulpits all over the world. As far as the essential work of EJI is concerned it is no secret that money for a good attorney often makes the difference between life and death. But after all is said and done the only One Who can change a heart is Jesus Christ.

    Try being a Jew in East Germany even today. I was preaching into my 5th month..... up until 1am Sunday night/Monday morning. Congregation was growing each and every Wednesday night and Sunday. The word of Jesus Christ in all his glory wants to be heard... even in East Germany. Problem was the Gvt not the people.
    Everyday for 6 days 3x a day I was brutally beaten. Until passing out after each session of beatings.
    Needless to say I was no longer welcomed to exist.
    You may ask were these criminals arrested?
    Not unless the government authorities put their own cuffs on themselves!

    Look, I'm not black, but my story has a similar start at the situation on 43:20 here, But in my case my mom responded to my care, I got beaten for helping her out clean blood from her face or who knows, this could have been my fate too. Mom eventually abandoned me my brother and sister with my monster of a father. It was for her best not ours, but it was probably the best outcome. We are all alive, and not in jail.

    Wow. Just wow. I am so edified. Thank you! Though, I wish that Redeemer was a more friendly place. Your intellectual church feels a bit haughty every time I visit, I don"t feel welcomed, and it feels very exclusive. Why isn't there a welcome committee? Do you need to be a high paid professional to be accepted? It is very strange and unlike other churches I've been a part of.

      I’ve never visited Redeemer. However, are you looking for a feeling or are you looking for truth? Have you seen American Gospel on Netflix? I’m just saying, not condemning. The truth will give you all the feelings you need.🙏🏼💕🙏🏼

    • @rengalafuze8700
      @rengalafuze8700 4 года назад +1

      Kristen O’Hare I'm looking for a place that welcomes whole-heartedly. Are you saying Redeemer teaches a false gospel? Yes. I have seen American gospel. What makes you think that? I've been listening to Tim Keller since the early 90s and they don't teach such nonsense. Funny, how you jump to conclusions. I attend another wonderful and selfless serving church. That is not my qualm. Just, maybe Redeemer members would be more welcoming and less exclusive. But, someone mentioned it is full of six-figure, young professionals that can't help themselves.

    • @kristenohare1467
      @kristenohare1467 4 года назад +3

      Ren Galafuze I was merely asking if you had seen American Gospel. I said that I had not visited Redeemer, so how could I judge it? I was asking because in American Gospel,, they mention how many in American “Christian” society are drawn towards these huge Mega churches that focus on the production and showmanship that’s presented, and not the Gospel. It also mentions that these churches are feelings based churches where people are drawn to them because of how it makes them feel and not by the true and factual teaching of God’s word and the Gospel. It was a question. Not a judgement. 🙏🏼💕🙏🏼

    • @rengalafuze8700
      @rengalafuze8700 4 года назад +1

      Kristen O’Hare I apologize. I thought I was misunderstood. You are absolutely correct. The truth of God and the gospel of Jesus is all I need to give me good feelings. I also understand that feelings can get me in trouble if I am only seeking to please myself. I was disappointed and saddened when I visited Redeemer to maybe become a member and again the second time I visited years ago. This video was filmed by Redeemer and it inspired and edified me but also reminded me of my experience. You showed me that maybe God did not want me there but where I am now--at my present church. I was attracted to seek fellowship at Redeemer because of Tim Keller's sermons which I have been listening to since the early 90s. I always say that Dr. Keller touched my intellect and that Ray C. Stedman opened my heart. These two people were the ones that showed me the Gospel in two different ways. I praise God for them. American Gospel is so powerful and reveals what has happened to so many churches in the U.S. What is so clear is the verse in in our Bible that clearly states the very real danger of loving money and how it is the root of all evil. And, the other where the Lord reveals how we have itching ears that want to hear soft and gentle things. It is human nature and I only seek God's mercy to continue on the right path. That is my prayer for myself and my family. I am blessed to have a family that are believers though some are struggling because of all the uncertainty that comes with life. Thank you for your soft answer. May God continue to guide and bless you. {{hugs}}

    Raised Christian. Trying to search for meaning. Atheist as of right now. I'd like to inform Mr. Keller that people can be good and do good without god. I didn't leave because part of Christianity was helping society. We have to do away with this notion that people can't live good and help their fellow beings unless they live exactly like you, Mr Keller!

    • @xtian7775
      @xtian7775 8 лет назад +3

      You are very confused and misinformed about Christianity. Therefore, who are you to inform anyone about anything of the matter? If you are still searching for meaning then you were not raised Christian. Keller nor any well-informed, intelligent Christian has ever claimed that "being or doing good" is exclusively Christian. ABSURD! No one has ever claimed that "living good and helping their fellow beings" is only doable if they live like Christians -- or Keller for that matter. YOUR mindset is a notion that needs to be done away with. It reveals how much you are lacking in not only spiritual maturity but also intellectual maturity.
      It logically and reasonably takes very little effort to truly seek the knowledge and wisdom embodied in the Judeo-Christian tradition that is gleaned from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and New testament. All one truly has to do is internally fall to your knees and in complete humility acknowledge that you (humanity) cannot save itself individually nor collectively from Sin and Death and all that is associated with it.
      If you truly humble yourself in your heart and acknowledge these basic and simple truths AND THEN truly ask God to reveal himself to you, in no uncertain terms, so that you may have your eyes opened AND THEN have the grounds and the freedom to accept or reject Him and then and only then can you say that you have taken the FIRST STEP(!).
      You have to come to the understanding that pursuing TRUTH and LIFE requires real effort, an honest and true desire from deep within your heart. You can't come to attain the full treasure and Glory that is to be in right relation with God by some half-assed attempt. It requires a kind of healthy obsession to pursue all that their is to know and understand about the Creator, The Most High God, Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
      Like Lennon said, "War Is Over If You Want It." It is that simple and easy. You just have to want it. Truly want it. But then you have to prove yourself by actually doing what it takes to get it. There is a lot of GRACE and MERCY awaiting to befall you if it is what you really, really desire. LOVE IS THE ANSWER, to quote Lennon again. But it takes the form of the son of God, Yeshua, Jesus the Christened.
      The real issue is that DEATH IS OVER IF YOU WANT IT. Only the Love of God can conquer that. The fruits of taking the first step and walking in the new light is that you will impart Grace and Mercy and good deeds toward your fellow beings. Simply put, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. But the Glory goes to God not to you. You have to seek UNDERSTANDING and accept that you will not receive a fullness of it nor of KNOWLEDGE. But you will be blessed with what will be sufficient for your walk in this world, however long or short.
      The goal is to love your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. Understanding what that means is beyond the first step and a part of the individual journey. BUT it is whether or not your heart is in the right place, whether your mindset is in the right place, whether or not you strive to renewing your mind daily from the conformity to the World and towards the renewing by the spiritual nourishment gained from the Scriptures.
      My hope is that whoever reads this will be blessed with just enough understanding, insight, true enlightenment, to be willing to consider, truly, truly consider that most of humanity is deluded and kept from even getting a glimpse of the truth because there is truly an evil adversarial entity that rules this world and its prevalent mindset.
      Maybe the best thing I could recommend is to explore chapter 14 of the gospel of JOHN in the New Testament. If you truly ponder what is proposed here you have to realize that there is no such claims made in the world religions such as these and if in fact what Jesus says is Truth then there is something truly awesome to be weighed here:
      Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you had known Me, you would know My Father as well.
      Jesus also said, "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever-the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and He will be in you.
      Perhaps ones eyes needs to be opened before they get a glimmer of Truth. I pray that you may humble yourself in heart and spirit to just simply ask God to open your eyes and your mind and your heart to His Truth so that you may have a sense of making a well-informed choice.

      @xtian 777: Hey I took time to read your writing because I was skeptical about anyone trying to write a theological thesis for a random youtube comment. After reading the whole thing, I want to Amen to what you said. However, please consider your audience's attention span next time and try to keep it focused on one thing. I do appreciate all you have said, except that I have a question about the phrase "humbling yourself". I am afraid it can be used as a tool of self-righteousness to claim one's belief. Can you clarify it a little bit? What if someone believes that he is a Christian simply because he humbled himself-- another form of work, instead of faith-- a proper response to God's humbling Grace? Can "humbling oneself" become the starting point of self boasting and Phariseeism?

    • @madisonsmith8502
      @madisonsmith8502 8 лет назад +2

      Lol. not misinformed. And yes. There are plenty of Christians out there who believe that atheists can't be good because they don't believe in God. I try and humble myself everyday. You assume that I was not raised Christian because I am still searching for meaning? Many religious people go through periods of doubts. You are not the only Christian and your story is only your story.

    • @typicalKAMBlover21
      @typicalKAMBlover21 8 лет назад +1

      @Madison Smith. Hi I hope you don't mind me asking a question, what is being "raised Christian"? Does being raised in a family of Christian tradition, automatically equate someone to a follower of Christ? I totally agree with you that all Christians struggle with doubts and unbelief. But I wrestle with the definition of being a "Christian". Is it a state of mind, a cultural identity, an enlightenment, a behaviorism, a political ideology, or a religion? I feel that it has to be something even beyond all these, a supernatural thing that not caused by human efforts. Do you agree?

    However, the solution that Mr. Stevens presented for those sins is misguided.
    Only the Blood of Jesus and the Gospel can cover sins and change the heart.
    Mr. Stevens didn't talk about that at all.

    Jesus was not standing up to government power. That is a mischaracterization of His mission.
    The power that Jesus "stood up to" was the power of death.
    Jesus was not a social justice warrior. He was the Lamb of God slain for sinners.

    The church has been slow to come to the table for the discussion about racial injustice?
    The church led the anti-slavery movement hundreds of years ago and has continued throughout. The church has also gone into marginalized communities and built schools and hospitals for centuries.
    Your statement seems to be a myopic one.

    We are not called to change the narrative. That's what critical Marxists, feminists and anarchists are here for. Proximity and hopefulness, and compassion and empathy and being Christ like are what take place when we are transformed by the Holy Spirit. A political or social project to rehash sins of one race, of one country, in time, is not a calling in the Bible. Please be more doctrinally sound and speak on Christ and the helper, the Holy Spirit. The problem here is it's a first social equity project when it becomes political. Christ didn't try to change the politics of the time, he tried to change the hearts of men which men and religious people CAN NOT do. Only the Holy Spirit can convict of sin. Pray and operate in the spirit to change the hearts of the lost and ignorant, we cannot take the burden of racism as Christians as the world does.

      all i’m saying is, we’re supposed to fight for justice and help the cause of the poor and oppressed. Jesus was a man of action! He healed the sick and raised the dead. Of course he changed hearts, but he also accompanied that with action! And Jesus is our model. To seek hearts without also physically helping is directly contested in James! This sermon is biblically sound, I would just ask why you don’t think so?

      LOL so you want to rewrite Scripture so you dont have to do anything about racism? LOL. Racism is REAL.
      And guess what? Only white people - who have all the power in America - can do anything about it.
      Blacks have been put through hell in America and REAL CHRISTIANS want to correct that. REAL CHRISTIANS want to abolish the death penalty. The Bible is clear: only GOD can take life not man. And that is unassailable. Anybody supporting the death penalty is supporting demonic spirits.

    Sadly both Brian and Tim leave out the evil, brutality of some of these criminals. Why do they forget the victims, the people who lost a loved one because of these criminals. They paint all these individuals as innocent of crimes. Yes there are innocent people incarcerated but not nearly close to what they suggest. So so sad.

      You dont even have stats to back up your data. MOST MEN IN PRISON ARE IN THERE FOR NON-VIOLENT OFFENSES. FACT. America has more people in prison than ANY OTHER COUNTRY ON EARTH! This is not an opinion, this is a FACT. Clearly this is a problem.

      If people don't want trouble with police, then they shouldn't be troublemakers. Problem solved. I'm almost 50 and have NEVER had ANY sort of bad encounter with police. Gee, maybe it's because I am law abiding citizen? Naw, that can't be it.

      I'm not saying that errors or even deliberate wrongdoing never happens. Of course people (of all kinds) are sometimes wrongfully convicted. It's a horrible thing. I can't even imagine enduring that!
      But this claim that black people are "mass incarcerated" is baloney. Blacks comprise a small percentage of the US population. So why are the crimes rates so high compared to the rest of the population? Who's fault is that? Not mine. And I REFUSE to feel guilty over it. Everyone knows black communities are in a shambles, all across the country. Again, I REFUSE to blamed for that.
      These things are THEIR fault, not mine! It's THEIR fault, not "whiteys". It's THEIR fault, not the justice system's fault.
      Don't want trouble with cops? Don't be a troublemaker. Problem solved!

      Nick Cummings so you say. Yeah Karl Sagan, Einstein, and Anne Frank/and co. are holding that door closed while being in hell. ;) I suspect I’ll believe in a god when I see one and am convinced from the evidence. If that happens after I die and it sends me to the hell it created, so be it. If true, hell isn't for bad people, it's mostly for honest people that aren't convinced of fantastical claims. I’m not interested in being tortured, so it seems your story is flawed. But do you deny that the majority of people die not being Christians? This fact makes an all powerful God somewhat less than all good.
