  • Flying Scotsman was cleared to run at 75mph for its 5 day charter, "The Flying Scotsman Centenary Weekender", travelling from London Kings Cross to Aberdeen and back.
Despite a number of physical and technical problems, together with strong wind and passing rain showers, we managed three locations - Grassthorpe, north of Newark; Scrooby, south of Doncaster: Colton Junction, south of York.
Scotsman performed perfectly, leaving Kings Cross about 20 minutes late but arriving at York just 6 minutes behind time.
The Class 57 running light engine ahead of the train was 57012. It doubled as a back up for the steam loco and also carried a police officer in case any intrusions on to the lineside by "steam fans" were spotted.
    Recorded on 30th June 2023.

I can assure you that this locomotive could easily do this speed without the diesel. The diesel helps it to accelerate faster though so the train causes less delays on this fast main line. ... Andy
