  • What was supposed to be a routine flight turned into a nightmare. In just three and a half minutes, a series of events unfolded, leading to a catastrophic crash in the Keelung River. The crash broke the aircraft into pieces. Immediately, 43 of the 58 individuals on board, including four crew members and 39 passengers, lost their lives.
What went wrong in those three and a half minutes? What series of events led to such a tragedy? Let's go back to that moment and understand what happened. This is the story of TransAsia Airways flight GE 235.

Deficiencies in Liao Chien-tsung's training lead to him becoming a captain on that flight. His lack of experience on the ATR 72 proved fatal. After a problem with engine number two, he ignored his ECAM and began shutting down engine 1 without the usual vocal communication between his crew. This lead to the notorious disaster that soon followed. This ultimately sealed the airline's fate a year later.

I lived a mile from the airport in a 20 story high rise…the tallest in the area…and could see these planes taking off daily. The area is densely populated with many tall buildings and skyscrapers and the planes have to ascend very quickly to get to safe airspace. It’s a miracle that they didn’t crash elsewhere because the loss of life could have easily reached thousands. I was an instructor and taught English to executives and some pilots for 12 years. Unless you’ve lived in Taiwan and experienced the culture firsthand it’s difficult to understand how this could have happened and in many comment threads people are incredulous about many things. It is not easy to find Pilots in Taiwan and hiring foreigners isn’t feasible because of the problem of finding someone who can speak AND read traditional Chinese fluently. Pilots can speak English to the extent necessary to communicate with flight control but management usually cannot, so recruiting someone from say Canada or Germany or wherever isn’t an option…the person has to be able to communicate and read material in Chinese from management. Given this problem, anyone who can fly or has aptitude is welcomed despite problems (which are common in Taiwan, such as severe test anxiety and stress to hold on to a job.) So I can understand management and the aviation community giving this guy all the breaks and encouragement to iron out his problems. For most people, this works and after a few years, they get a handle on things and become competent. However percentages being what they are, some people will just not be able to make it no matter how much “Jia Yo” (encouragement) they get. I saw this often as an outsider…people in positions which they shouldn’t be in but because of the culture remained. Westerners have trouble with this because they don’t operate in a culture but within a kind of “tolerance zone.” Like I said, difficult to understand unless you’ve lived it and it’s a main reason why the West has problems with China…not so much Taiwan or Japan because they are more Western now, but it’s still a big problem.
I remember when this happened the video clip was on nonstop loop, and the country was really bummed…anything that brings shame to Taiwan is felt by all and causes depression…on a positive note, much was learned from this and it produced a lot of changes to procedure across the board.
Finally, most of the training materials are in English, which is a challenge for non native speakers but especially for those from Asian countries as the writing system is fundamentally different than English or Russian or Arabic. The Taiwanese learning culture is test oriented…meaning teachers instruct based on what will appear on tests…NOT based on learning the material. So when I studied for a motorcycle license I was faced with no Driver’s license manual to study (theory and some rules) but rather a 200 page document consisting of questions which may appear in the test. I had to memorize these questions and multiple choice options because when I took the test, the questions would appear and oftentimes an answer was right or wrong depending on a change in words or a number. Point is this leads to a kind of learning which places one at a disadvantage in times of stress such as during an airplane malfunction. A western person can rely on trouble shooting and independent thinking to sort things out, whereas someone from the other background will struggle. Experience helps with most situations in life but aviation stuff is not ordinary life and when faced with possible death within moments it becomes difficult for most (especially those from the test taking culture) to think straight. Fear paralyzes the thinking process and people struggle to think and get their body to follow commands. So if you’re inclined to say “how could he have done something like that?” or “Didnt he get enough training?” try and remember this…unless you’ve encountered this kind of environment or Asian culture this is difficult to comprehend.
Lastly, it should be obvious from the video how densely populated the surrounding area is (especially near 101 which would have been in n the flight path had things gone normally.) I can’t say for certain but my feeling is that things went bad because the pilots were faced with obstacle avoidance to reduce loss of life and this put a huge burden on decision making. It’s a miracle they crashed where they did and the loss of life was minimal. Had this happened near 101 the loss of life would have been huge…thousands.

it is definitely a point of view that's worth considering...
and the fact so many on RUclips are "barely literate"- i.e. unable to read long texts, is the problem of those people, not the comment maker.

The whole time I didn't know what was going to happen so I was praying they were going to survive, the mystery was so gripping. In this video you're making sure that the person watching just wants to know how it played out, not what the final event was as we saw that at the start. Why haven’t anyone came up with a idea to build the aircrafts with a parashoot thing ?, something like airbags that releases in vehicles, so when engine failures occur it releases to keep the aircraft from crash landing?… Also why haven’t they started building aircrafts with something that allows it to float on water if it should crash into water a may be able to stay a float?… also the gas mass issue why not find a way to av a builder in oxygen gas thing , like how (house) air freshener sprays out the scented fumes.. a gas oxygen that sprays the entire aircraft that allow persons to breathe..

I would suggest you adding more visual touch to your videos eg. Adding fires to a went-out engine. It would feel more engaging to watch. Though I like your way of presenting! 👍🏻

Great suggestion! Hard to add these kind of effects + in this case there was no engine fire.

@@Aviationaccidents It was an example. Your previous videos had engine-out scenarios. But still it's a great video ☺️

So in such case, why can't they just increase full thrust and feather for both engines until they find out exactly which engine is malfunctioning?

It's OK to not be a pilot or doctor. We are all better off to admit that theres nothing wrong with accounting or teaching.
