"out of the sea *sigh* wish I could be... Part of thaaat... Woooooooooooorld" - OR - "Far from skid row.... I dream we'll go.... Somewhere... Thaaaat's... Greeeeeeeen"
That was intentional! Menken and Ashman often nicknamed this song "Somewhere That's Wet"/ "Somewhere That's Dry" in early parts of production for The Little Mermaid.
I know you’re not the biggest fan of Anastasia - but I’d love to see a breakdown of In My Dreams. I think the song uses shifts between minor & major so well to convey its message. Also I can’t wrap my head around the key & chord changes in the verse - they seem so haphazard but why do they work so well? Gahhhh!
I think your answer on why Ariel repeats matches up pretty well Howard Ashmen's direction he gives to Jodi Benson (dunno if you saw it, but there's a great video of them in the booth on youtube) But yeah, I used to think this song was so boring, but the older I get and the more I learn I've grown to love it more and more lol
Love hearing your analysis of this song (my favorite song!). I wrote about it for my Senior Project for my Music degree and shared many of the same thoughts. The reason I love this song and love performing it is its sincerity, how Ariel is just in her little corner of the sea and she's just making things up as she goes and gradually shares more and more of her passion. Whenever I see a performance that lacks that genuine sense of wonder and curiosity and hope, it just feels like so fake and plastic, and people start to take the song less seriously because of all the interpretations that exist that don't really bring the character to light in a full three dimensional way. Ariel is a character I connect with on a deep level, and I make that known whenever I perform this song. A big thing about it is that even though the title is called "Part of Your World", she never says that in the song. It's always "Part of That World". Why? She's not encountered Prince Eric yet. She's been shown to value her human treasures at the expense of her own life at times even before this (remember the shark chase where she grabs for her bag of human stuff, like the dinglehopper and snarfblatt, right in the path of danger when she could've just saved herself far easily from the shark?). Being a part of the human world has been her dream for years and years before the Prince ever appeared in her life, he was just the catalyst to put her plans into motion, and this song shows her love for her biggest dream perfectly.
I LOVE your breakdowns of songs. Endlessly fascinating and your personality makes it even more entertaining. I know you're pairing down the music part of your life but these older videos are still appreciated.
I made an analysis of this song on the harmony but on the performing part this threw some light at some doubts I had, like I didn't realized some of the things you mentioned and now I wonder if I'll ever be as great as you on music (I'm studying a degree on music and I love your BTS videos)
You honestly ruined the best moment of that song for me at 4:10.. that's the climax of the song where she acknowledges the responsibility to take matters in her own hands and "ready"-es herself be transformed.. but you just threw it away. Honestly I think you usually respect the material more but I'm disappointed in you on this one
Im my class we said the ending progessions was I - V42/IV - IV - iv. Again I mean…it’s not picky but I literally got called out for asking if it could be a I7 in musicianship🥲. I’m so curious how people can just tell the difference when not just being told or simply reading or hearing like dang.

Yes. The double rhyme!
