Something that hasn't been done much, which you really should do, is watch William Wyler's Ben-Hur from 1959 with Charlton Heston. That's my favourite film of all time, next to The Lord of the Rings :)

There’s a 1949 film called The Window, with Bobby Driscoll, shot mostly on location in NYC, where a hot summer night and sleeping on the fire escape factored into the plot. It really was a thing. Great thriller, by the way.

I'm a native New York City guy and a wall of windows is not only across the back of the building but also the front. I can honestly tell you that not once did I walk into an apartment and NOT find a pair of binoculars sitting on a window ledge. A lot of New Yorkers just don't care who looks.
Oh and definitely pay attention to things outside of the main characters. Hitchcock used something called deep focus (meaning everything has the same clarity) and he set things that way to make people wonder what was going on in all those other places.

The reason the folks slept on the fire escape and why everyone had their windows open is that it was very rare to have home air conditioning in those days unless you were rich, so the only way to get relief from the summer heat was to have the windows open or sleep outside. Some people back in the old days would even go to a park to sleep in the cool grass.

People often kept their apartment windows open in NYC during hot summers in the 50's as many did not yet have air conditioning. Which is why the couple sleeps out on their fire escape. And yes, the man setting the clock in the songwriter's apartment was Hitchcock making his cameo appearance.

Reason you never see whats buried in the garden is that Thorwell, saw the dog sniffing around. When Jimmy Stewart(chatacter) sent Lisa and Company, to dig, Thorwell had already
moved the incriminating evidence elsewhere, its also why the garden flowers are lower, Thorwell was a little clumsy(or was in a hurry) replacing the correct amount of dirt.

I was born in 1970 & my Mom is a *huge* movie buff, so when we got our first VCR in 1983, she quickly built up a library of classic movies. This was one of our favorites. We'd usually watch once a year in late summer, when it was likely to be warmer (as in the film). We'd open up the family room window, turn out the lights & just lose ourselves in the film's world. Great memories.
I unapologetically had a HUGE crush on Grace Kelly & for some reason, my smitten brain refused to process that she had already passed away before I even saw Rear Window for the first time. :-/

If you want to see a good christmas movie Stewart is most remember for do the Capra classic "It's A Wonderful Life" (1946). Definitely! @ 7:34 That's just over $11,000 in today's dollars. BTW, that is a cool poster of Gargantua or whatever blackhole that is to your right. @ 10:00 Hitchcock is known for his cameos doing one, sometimes two, in nearly every movie he did. He's so well known for it that there are websites showing all of them. Haven't watched your Rope video yet Ollie, but he has two in that one. If you want another really good Hitchcock classic and a good Halloween type of freaky movie do "Psycho" (1960). Another great Hitchcock movie with Grace Kelly is "Dial M For Murder". A few more Hitchcock's keep to in mind, "North By Northwest", "The Birds", "Notorious", "The 39 Steps", "The Man Who Knew Too Much", "Shadow Of A Doubt" and too many others to list. Hey, people have been wondering what was in the garden for over 67 years now! LOL! Recommend not researching any of these movie suggestions so you won't get any spoilers that would spoil surprises for you. The reason everyone has their shades up and windows open is that it’s the middle of the summer in the days before air conditioning. That’s also the reason the couple is sleeping on their fire escape. It’s hot!

Necklace. That is an old fashioned hearing aid. You see here turn it down when she is annoyed by the dancing upstairs. Then she's outside and can't hear her neighbor. She has to turn it back up.

What's in the boooooox?!?! REAR WINDOW has climbed in my personal canon to one of my ten favorite movies of all time. I'm a little surprised that reactors never figure out why people slept on the fire escape in the '50s -- in Olden Times, people didn't fancy-shmancy "air conditioning"! Though I'm not sure it made much different in the concrete canyons of New York.
I'm a year late to this party, and I'm sure everyone else has delivered all the trivia about Rear Window, so I'll try to come up with something off the wall . . . Supposedly the general plot of the movie was based on the "Dr. Crippen" case, in which a quack doctor cut up his supremely annoying wife in his basement and then fled England with his much younger lover. There are probably several documentaries about it on RUclips, and it was the subject of a best-selling book, "Thunderstruck" by Erik Larson.
I'd like to hear what Thorwald had to say to the police about Lisa in his apartment, though: "Officer! I wish to report I caught the Princess of Monaco rummaging through my underwear drawer!"

Excellent reactions and reviews of this and Rope. I love that a lot of younger people are reacting to Hitchcock's films, and finding they still hold up as well or better than many current films. You are spot on in many of your observations.
I think if you want to sneak in more Hitch for October, Psycho and The Birds would be good candidates as both easily fit into the horror genre, yet have so much more psychological meat to them than your typical Friday the 13th teenage slasher clone. I also STRONGLY recommend Vertigo, one of the great films of all time. Anyway, looking forward to more of your content.

Watching your youthful and ignorant reactions was very funny! However if you didn't talk so much about not understanding you might hear the dialogue that would answer your question about the hatbox. But there is something very sad. You can't imagine a world without air conditioning, where it is safe to leave windows open, doors unlocked, etc. You can't imagine anything but the world you know.
