He said in an interview with Justin Hawkins recently that it wasn't that Sony dropped him. It was just that the contract he made with Sony had a time limit. And the time limit expired because he got VERY sick for over a year and was bedbound. So it wasn't that they dropped him because he got sick... but he got sick and the contract ran out and he wasn't able to complete making the album that he had started making with them. So it wasn't really a malicious nefarious "little guy versus big corporation" situation. It's was just unlucky circumstances and Ren's illness having a really big flare up even if he was undiagnosed at the time.
This one really got me. As a Psych RN this made me reevaluate my approach with my patients. Those of us Mental Health Professionals can sometimes fall into the trap of basically over explaining and psycho analyzing patients with out having the time or the energy to fully understand our patients. Props to Ren for opening my eyes. I love that you break it down and explain it for people to understand his struggles.
I'm still convinced there's a possibility that in "Illest of our time" when ren says "Banished from the Heavens but I'm knocking on the sky" that that is in reference to losing out on the record contract but succeeding as an independent artist.
I have thought about this alot. In my mind Ren is an artist in the same vein as Banksy. Independent, Emotional, Subversive and sticking it to the industry. Both operate across mediums and have a message in every piece

This is really surprising to me, Lyme Disease was really at the forefront of my medical education and I am a Chiropractor which doesn't directly deal with these issues (but we need to rule it out due to several issues among those destruction of the bone in the vertebrae). The bone in the spine will get weakened to the point where it will collapse just from the weight of the person's body. It's terrible. I have diagnosed a few cases in my career but it's likely there were many more but early on the symptoms can be difficult to pinpoint unless you can pinpoint the bullseye rash. If you get a rash that looks like a bullseye on a dart board, you likely have Lyme Disease. Get it checked out immediately if you have this. The disease comes from the Ixodes Tick, a smallish tick. Lyme Dz can destroy your life.

For some reason I always thought Ren reminds me of Pink Floyd with his deep lyrics, intense/artistic videos and outlook on the world. Its is interesting that they both use the Pig / Animal Farm reference in several songs with greed, power and mental issues, etc.
As a mahoosive fan and lover of Floyd, I can only image how happy and made up Ren would being associated with them and the depth and meaning behind the lyrics ❤
It's readily apparent that Ren has taken a lot of inspiration from PF, especially from Gilmour's guitar style. You can really hear it during the more blues-y track from busking with The Big Push.
Ren recently said he won't say the real meaning behind the pig mask. He said it's very personal to him, but he selfishly loves to hear everyone's interpretations on what it means to them personally.
I do wonder if it represents Ren’s struggle with his demons, but also representative of the record industry, capitalism and pharma that are all exploitative. There is something I read about Solomon’s testament where demons in the form of animals appeared to him. The demons subjected people to illnesses and disease (pertinent?) and Solomon was able to control them with a ring and cure the illnesses (REN’s music contains a number of references to him looking for solutions to his illness but not finding the answer) and mentions of demons. The pig could also be a reference to the pigs in Animal Farm seeking to control and exploit the other animals. Interesting thesis but I really don’t know if this is on point or wildly off it. That’s the thing with Ren though. He makes you think
the song is also about his issues with the medical system and his rage at the doctors and psychiatrist that couldn't diagnose him fully and how he struggled finding the right fix, and the truth is that he still really hasn't.
I knew you would like this one 😊 I too am going through the same journey as Ren. We got lyme the same year, misdiagnosed the same length of time. I lost over a decade of my life imprisoned in my body, not knowing if you will live or die.. everyday is still a battle. Lyme that wasn’t treated early robs you of everything. It’s crazy effectively hearing your journals in music form. Recognising that real deep pain and suffering behind his music, I find it so inspiring that he’s been able to turn it into art and is now getting the deserved rewards ❤ without lyme would his art be the same? I hope I can find that same purpose 😌🔥 thanks for the reaction

This "It´s all in your head" shit drives me crazy. My head is where my brain is....so yeah, I am sure it´s somewhere in there but help would be nice.
I like your thought that Ren's illness is sort of a blessing in disguise. Ren watches reactions and he might stumble upon yours. I could very well imagine that he picks up your idea and puts it into song. Pls react to Illest Of Our Time next.
Great reaction as always bro! Good to see you've been doing your research between videos haha! I always see the pig mask as interesting because it's a pig and a butcher at the same time. The imagery always seems to be used in association with the medical profession, and with Ren's history with medical negligence I always took it as a metaphor for how he was "butchered" by misdiagnosis and prescriptions he didn't need - the patient reduced to a kind of livestock, making the fact that the butcher is also a pig (i.e., one of us) all the more poignant. I could be way off base there though 😅
I was sooo glad to see you reacted to this! I saw your Hi Ren reaction then promptly looked for this. I wasn't dissappointed. Maybe not your normal vibe musically, BUT Paris Paloma's Labour if you haven't listened is.... Ooof. So f*cking good!
The Pig Butcher i believe is the representation of the self consuming nature of capitalism, in Rens videos specifically they're the Pharmasutical and Music Industries
Regarding the pig head, as I understand it Ren was influenced in his younger years by George Orwell's subversive writing, particularly Animal Farm. That, and the animal head thing appeared in hallucinations for him.
I always see the pig as, in part, the aforementioned reference to Orwell's Animal Farm. The other symbolic image i see is the hypocracy of a pig/butcher versus a health care professional/healer.
Lately a lot of Ren's reactions seemed to be the same, but it took only one reaction from you to recognize you're clever af.... i really appreciate the sharing of your thoughts with us ❤
one of the best spoken word performances from the UK is "Fire in the Booth - Akala Part 4" but he dose it after he lays down some hard ass bars. if you ever get the time it's something everyone should watch at least once in their lives.
Interesting, that is the third different thing that people hear there. Record labels that Can modify your gift. Commodify your gift Come under fire. I will have to check the lyrics to find out which one it is.
The lyric is "Commodify your gift", but I've noticed that the occasional times I've misheard his lyrics, it puts a whole different and equally valid spin on them. A particular example was in Money Game 1 when I heard "We worship the bleak" as "We worship the bleat" as he talked about the way shows and themes repeat in the media. Given that Sony would *absolutely* have had the ability to modify his gift by controlling what he released, that creates a great additional thought tangent.
I can relate to this so much. My doctors are treating each individual symptoms but not the actual problem. It's so frustrating. The do no harm oath doesn't apply anymore. They get a kickback from every pill they prescribe. That's what the doctor focus on now days. There are a few doctors that actually puts the patients before the kickbacks but they are very few.
You answered your own question about the pig_butcher. "And at some point that figure started interchanging in and out with the healthcare professional..."
Oh shit! 3:20 ‘basically your mind is making you sick’ but also sounds like ‘making music’ and he literally is and I don’t know if that was intended but I love that line now, especially in the midst of her blasé approach and representation of generic patient care.
If you want to know what the pig mask is all about may I suggest you listen to the Pink Floyd ANIMALS album. I believe it explains his thought process about things quite well my friend. Nice reaction. 👍😎
Check out Chinchilla his sister from another Mr, who sang ChalkOutlines with him. She went independently around the same time, they were with the same management but going nowhere. Then boom........
welcome to the wormhole that is Ren, I would recommend "Power" ,"Genesis" "Bitter sweet symphony" "Losing it" also have a look at his live street performances with his band the Big Push "I shot the sheriff" (red braces version) then, when you think are ready, "Suicide" and the emotional "For Joe".......
Love the reaction and the idea that Ren being dropped by Sony was a blessing in disguise. Certainly think that Ren wouldn’t have the creative freedom he does as an independent artist. Love to hear your thoughts on Illest of our time but also Penitence or Depression too.
it's a condemnation of the health profession, hitting back at all the meds he was put on while being told his symptoms were all in his head, all the side effects of those meds causing his psychosis while not helping the root cause of his illness.
I'm so glad you mentioned the animal masks and wondered what they mean cause I overlooked the symbolism before. But I do believe there are more than 1 animal head and each represents 1 of 7 deadly sins I could be wrong but there is cat for pride pig for gluttony named Gula, the Goat or in some cases its a rabbit, horse or fox is for lust going by the name of Luxuria. For the toad by the name of Avaritia bears the sin of greed. Next is Superbia, the peacock representing Vanity aka Pride. Then Invidia, the dog that is envious. Ira, the Lion, can't get away from anger and wrath, which leaves last but not least the donkey or mule either by the name Pigritia or the name Acedia representing Sloth. I'm pretty sure this is the theme he's using for the fa e masked animals.
I think the pig man represents the way both artist are treated by the industry and the way people afflicted with illness are treated by the medical industry
Can't claim to have ever talked to the guy so I don't know his perspective, but we've got universal healthcare. Pharmaceutical companies have no leverage in the UK. If they want access to the country then they have to play by our rules and accept what we're willing to pay. The worst our doctors can do is to get it wrong or to dismiss your concerns.
it was sony and they didnt know it was lyme disese they dropped him long before the diagnosis and it is absolutely a blessing in disguise sony wouldnt let him talk like this about the psychotropic industrial complex
I wanted to add my two cents on the doctor/psycho pig interchange as someone who is disabled from ME/CFS, which I believe is what Ren was misdiagnosed with for 10yrs. This illness, which disables almost everyone it touches, is belittled in society. We're told we're sick, faking, its psychosomatic (which is what the doctor implied at the start of Ren's video.) I literally was treated like this for 5yrs trying to work out wtf was wrong with my body. I saw 13 Doctors, 2 surgeons, gynecologists, etc trying to get someone to believe me. This shit is commonplace in my community. I feel like the pig "butcher" reference is linked back to the imbalance of power in every doctors office, especially where mental health and physical symptoms are both present. Doctors have so much power to help or destroy someone's only hope with 1 decision. They can make split second decisions that can negatively impact their future care, job opportunities and relationships. That fear of doctors is felt keenly in both POC communities (especially black communities) and disabled communities. Im not 100% but that was my take away 😊
From what I understand, the pig is something he would see in his head during a psychotic break. It represents the "system", capitalism, corporate greed, and the medical complex. Please do a reaction for Crutch ft Bibi. I appreciate you!
Misdiagnosis is a huge problem, especially with the money in big pharma ,being passed from Dr to Dr , from Hospital to hospital and specialist to specialist can really destroy any faith that you might of had in a process .. n the number of young lads, especially in England, commit suicide while in the process of trying to find a diagnosis or trying to sort out a misdiagnosis..

He has a specific meaning for the Pig but won't say what it is. Seems like the pig from Animal Farm by George Orwell to me
Pigs also represent greed in Buddhism which I heard he has read a bit on.

That's a sound interpretation. I'm inclined to agree with you
Great reaction brother ✊🏽Being dropped by Sony was the making of Ren, no way he could be so real under a label.... Long live Independence... 🤘🏼
6:31 Record label meetings that commodify your gift... Love your reactions & Poetry.
The Pig Butcher i believe is the representation of the self consuming nature of capitalism, in Rens videos specifically they're the Pharmasutical and Music Industries
I love your reactions. This is pretty deep. I write poetry as well. It is rather dark. Thank you for being yourself. 💙
Is your poetry available anywhere? I'm interested! Cheers
This therapy is so close to home, it’s like they have a script they all follow
Record labels that
Can modify your gift.
Commodify your gift
Come under fire.
Given that Sony would *absolutely* have had the ability to modify his gift by controlling what he released, that creates a great additional thought tangent.
they dropped him when the symptoms started, it was long before the correct diagnosis finally came up.
Oh shit! 3:20 ‘basically your mind is making you sick’ but also sounds like ‘making music’ and he literally is and I don’t know if that was intended but I love that line now, especially in the midst of her blasé approach and representation of generic patient care.
lol loved that impromptu rhyme at the beginning lol was perfect
Just a detail, he says "record label meetings that commodify your gift, boy".
REN is underrated, transcends so many genre.
Loved your rhyming flow at the beginning, was jumping about with ya x
If you want to know what the pig mask is all about may I suggest you listen to the Pink Floyd ANIMALS album. I believe it explains his thought process about things quite well my friend. Nice reaction. 👍😎
Or to walk back further from that album into more context, the novel animal farm by George Orwell. The pigs run shit.
I’ve literally just come from checking out “Marked” and now another Ren reaction. I’m having a very good morning. 👌🏻😁
Renegade subbed and liked to help Ren's rising tide lift all ships 🌊 including yours my friend ❤️ I am also a poet so I really enjoy your POV 😊
Beat was Meant to drown out the doctor in the beginning! Think about it...
Check out Chinchilla his sister from another Mr, who sang ChalkOutlines with him. She went independently around the same time, they were with the same management but going nowhere. Then boom........
I’ve reacted to Chalk Outlines. It was an awesome collaboration between Chinchilla and Ren
@@YoungbloodPoetry Chinchilla has just dropped a new song, she is so unique just like Ren 👍. Love from the UK
(I think the line is "record lable meetings that commodify your gift boy")
Reaction suggestion - REN "Crucify Your Culture". A fantastic song devoid of his health issues.
"Record label meetings that can modify your gift, boy"
welcome to the wormhole that is Ren, I would recommend "Power" ,"Genesis" "Bitter sweet symphony" "Losing it" also have a look at his live street performances with his band the Big Push "I shot the sheriff" (red braces version) then, when you think are ready, "Suicide" and the emotional "For Joe".......
Love the reaction and the idea that Ren being dropped by Sony was a blessing in disguise. Certainly think that Ren wouldn’t have the creative freedom he does as an independent artist. Love to hear your thoughts on Illest of our time but also Penitence or Depression too.
Record label meetings that commodify your gift boy.....
My guess it's Professor Pyg is a supervillain who appears in comic books published by DC Comics, an adversary of Batman.
it's a condemnation of the health profession, hitting back at all the meds he was put on while being told his symptoms were all in his head, all the side effects of those meds causing his psychosis while not helping the root cause of his illness.
It was Sony, and it was do to his health and not being able to tour and stuff
U Are You And UR Beautifully Marked
'Record label meetings that commodify your gift, boy'
Good call relating this to money game I think. It’s like his personal money game story for real in this song.
"Losing patience/patients with the process..."
Was just singned by Sony.
The piggy is a hallucination.
ren is great, good review
"Record labels who want to commodify your gift boy..." they just want to make money of you!
I think the pig man represents the way both artist are treated by the industry and the way people afflicted with illness are treated by the medical industry
Ren is a master of his craft😲
The sample song is "Bre Petrunko" I just love seeing you vibe with the song 🥳
I hope he heals enough to tour the US. I'll throw my money at him. I obviously want him to convalesce, but it would be an honor to see him live.
I love your reactions.
I always took the pig to be showing the capitalistic money grabbing nature of the medical industry, since he's always in the doctor get up
Can't claim to have ever talked to the guy so I don't know his perspective, but we've got universal healthcare. Pharmaceutical companies have no leverage in the UK. If they want access to the country then they have to play by our rules and accept what we're willing to pay.
The worst our doctors can do is to get it wrong or to dismiss your concerns.
Great reaction
Please check out these others by Ren "Dominoes" "Ocean" ft Eden Nash "Humble" ft. Eden Nash
Ren is so special
it was sony and they didnt know it was lyme disese they dropped him long before the diagnosis and it is absolutely a blessing in disguise sony wouldnt let him talk like this about the psychotropic industrial complex
The pig man is a representation of the "doctors" which through their misdiagnosis, were more akin to butchers.
I don't know how people don't get that the pig doctor is the doctor personified.
I think the pig mask might be a reference to Napoleon and the other greedy pigs in Animal Farm by Orwell 🤷♂️
Hooked on Ren, the guy NEVER disappoints.
Best artists of our time our not signed...they are able to be real...not what they tell you to be
I read and my opinion the pig mask person is the music industry. Lovepeace
Got lymes myself. Still love the outdoors, and it's tiks that cause it, generally deer ticks.
However you want to spell it, but a reet barstool of a situation. I lack energy and that is the worst.
Sorry not trying to teach a 'grandmother to suck eggs my friend '
Blessings to you all ✌️
Blessings to you as well

Thank you for your kindness. Means the world.
Undortunately I have a cyst in my bonce, and Rheumatology issues, but to be honest, I'm still here and grinning, also laughing at life, and whispering, you haven't got me yet!
This isn't a poor me thang, in fact it's amazingly the opposite, and I'm jubilant with it.
Don't be sorry, laugh, dance and cry when you need to, but enjoy every millisecond, I am so much better off than many.
Blessed Be my friend 💜🙏✌️
