Actually, it probably wasn’t the animators that made these, but the background artists. They are also the ones coloring the animated frames. The animators usually “just” animate, i.e. storyboards, rough animation and cleanup 🙂

0:24 is really artistic. Take a look at how 'unfinished' the background looks. Little things like that just show how much craftsmanship went into the show. It's so cool to see how much effort they put into pictures that you see for like 1-2 seconds. Great Video!

Nerd info: Most of these were painted by hand with acrylic paint, just like the backgrounds. You can see the shift to digital paint in some images like Squidward's hairy nose. I know season 1 bgs were painted on paper and not canvas but I'm unsure about these closeups, although they probably were too. Many were painted by Calvin Liang who also made Painty the Pirate, from the opening sequence (the original painting is about the size of a greeting card and has no mouth!).
The amount of detail that was put into these illustrations is incredible. Such a shame how such marvelous work is only used for a few frames. You just don't see this type of passion and effort put into the more modern Spongebob episodes.

As weird as these are can we appreciate just how beautiful and detailed some of these are, like the “I don’t need it” painting has so much detail and you can really see the desperation in his eyes but also the self denial. They did a great job with these.
