  • **Update Oct 5 2020. I have just posted 2 videos on Kurts clean guitar tone, eq , strings and picks etc tone hints and vid with the sound comparison between a Mustang , a Strat with a Hot-rail in the bridge and a FenderJaguar- Kurt Cobain edition Fender Japan.
    subscribe to see them:
    I’m also going to post vids with the Poly-Chorus, Rat pedal and the mostly unusable Grunge pedal.***
    ** I know I hit the wrong note in this video, DOH! I cringe now when see this 10 years later, I want to vomit ! I’m really sorry folks😉. How embarrassment😂.***
    This is a quick comparison of the Vintage Small Clone Chorus vs the Re-issue playing the first few notes and prechorus of Nirvana's "Come as you are" . The first played and the one pictured on the right of the pedal board is the original. It is warmer and seems to have less "worble" than the reissue. You can hear the difference straight away when the reissue is switched on straight after the original is turned off. I have turned the rate down a bit on the reissue to get the similar sound that the original has when the rate is at the 12 oclock position -(see pedal board on vid). There are only small visual differences with the LED light being smaller and a different dial on the original. I have 2 reissues and they both sound identical. The original version sounds warmer to my ears.
    They both do the job but the original is better.

    I owned the original full chorus about ten years ago... ended up selling it for $250. They are rare now. The reissue has nothing on the original. It's just one of those sounds you can't quite pinpoint, it's very warm and alive.

    The LED on the vintage pedal is 3mm; the reissue has a 5mm LED. Also, the vintage says Mini-Chorus; the reissue says Full-Chorus.

    @gavinpavlina Curious what you mean by the rate knob being a different shape (not rounded)? i also have both an original and a reissue, and as you probably noticed the reissue says full chorus, the original says mini chorus

    Yep the original sounds warmer and rounder. EQ your way to that sound on a reissue with an amp...

    @adam79adam79: Actually, vintage EH-4600 FULL CHORUS units do exist. And the most obvious way to tell the difference between those is by the dash (-) separating the words "FULL" and "CHORUS" (on the reissues) as the vintage units don't have it. The LED in the originals was a clear one then changed to a red by 1983 (both 3mm).

      so if someone on ebay is saying a full chorus is vintage are they lying? which one did kurt cobain use? a mini chorus?

    • @joeellis5352
      @joeellis5352 9 лет назад

      Joe Ellis oh sorry i thought you said vintage full chorus units do NOT exist, but yeah do you know if he used full or mini?

    • @TheStratoDude
      @TheStratoDude 9 лет назад

      Joe Ellis both Full and Mini versions existed when EHX released 'em in the 80's. To tell a vintage unit from a reissue one, you have to look into the LED (3mm, clear or red) and the absence of a dash sign between the words FULL and CHORUS.
      According to Earnie Bailey (Cobain's guitar tech) he used a full Chorus unit with the Panasonic made RETICON SAD1024A delay chip which is more "watery" sound wise than the vintage unit with the MN3007 chip.

      Strato Dude - Unless you can post a link from a reputable source where Earnie Bailey specifically says that Cobain's Small Clone, without a doubt, had the SAD1024 chip in it, then you're full of shit. In the meantime, until you find that link, how about stop perpetuating bad urban legends, misinformation, and hearsay on the internet.

    What's the depht position? High or Down? The sound is perfect on the mini-chorus in my opinion

      Eliott Cuenin :
      Hi, the switch is up and the dial should be at 12 o’clock four the original or just below 10 o’clock on the re-issue.
      A Boss DS1 or DS2 with the tone set to 11 o clock is close.
      Good luck

    In my opinion, the vintage one just is better. I have a reissue and it just doesn't get the classical tones.

      I’m learning “Slunecny Hrob” by The Blue effect. The guitarist was awesome, sadly he passed away in 2016.
      I hope I can do the song justice, it sounds terrible how I play it now.

      There is a difference, the effect is greater on the reissue and it does sound not as warm.
      They are both great but the original is better to my ears.
