I learned "Hard Luck Blues" from a 1920s recording of Dock Boggs. Later in life, Boggs recorded the song a second time during the 1960s under the title "Brother Jim Got Shot." I am certain that he's using gut strings in the original recording.
My instrument is an 1888 Thompson & Odell "The Luscomb" banjo tuned eAEG♯B (relative gCGBD), with Aquila "New Nylgut" strings and a traditional two-leg maple bridge by Joel Hooks.

Hey, Clifton. I'm not a player of the banjo currently. I'm interested in it after coming across you. Is the Banjo Heritage course geared towards beginners, or experienced players that want more insight?
John, the BanjoHeritage.com course is mostly geared toward beginners; however, my approach is dynamic enough that I think seasoned musicians will also benefit.@@John-mh6os
I see Clifton, I like video. Thats all I have to say about that.
Top man Clifford, through the miracle of technology you've just improved my Sunday afternoon here in England with this song.Thank you.
Just thinking the same, here in Australia 🇦🇺. Fellah’s a global phenomenon 🪕😊👍❗️
@@billyaitken7461 sure is mate, we both have good taste🙂👍
Man, I do like those new strings. As if your Luscomb couldn't growl more, Joel Hooks showed us what for.
Did I just buy a banjo after binge watching a ton of your videos? Yes
Ain’t that an awful dose!
Your voice sounds awesome here buddy
So thankful to have you to learn from. Some of the other banjo “teachers” on here look like they haven’t worked a day in their life
For sure. Dodging the townies & hipsters on the pootube feed gets tiring.
Hey there Clif buddy! What a grand little old tune, what a treat!
I love the Scenery nice song it was awesome
Dock Boggs FOREVER
Tragic, sad and funny. And sum durn good banjer picken' too. I'd say Mr. Hicks nailed that one.
я на таком инструменте играл бы только на добыче золотых приисков и негде более супер струна
В этой балалайке очень много никеля и латуни!
Hard luck hard luck they placed me on the spot, jury said it wasn’t me, wife had a litter in her throat.
Not sure what was better- the face you made at the end or your beautiful landscape!

Love it when folk crack up laughing in songs, it shows they're enjoying it! Got that old 20s record vibe.
