    Wrap-up with some reordering
    A. Match attitude
    1. Know your strengths and use the serve that sets up your strength
    4. Use your best serve early and often (in general, use tactics that work!)
    6. make sure your attack is going well, otherwise opponent will not take risk on return
    5. vary the quality of the spin, not only type of spin
    3. Be prepared to miss a serve or two per match, due to risk taking
    7. be willing to sacrifice a few points by varying into opponent's strength
    B. Practice attitude
    2. Practice serve in match conditions (do some exercise first)
    8. practice to perfection
    9. play practice matches

I like this video, and it gives me confidence as a coach/player to know that I'm doing a lot of that, almost without thinking about it ! I particularly try to get the students to concentrate on ONE serve for a while; I always thought scattering different ones in the session was a "no-no" ! And there's always one in any class who insists on serving top-spin, when their partner is supposed to be returning with a long, low push for the server to open up - makes the "open" much easier for them when they serve like that and it pops up ! Thanks - I'll take a look at some of your other vids; very useful !

Typically I don't think while I play, but I can usually recall the pattern of scoring, i.e. 0-1, 0-2, 1-2... 7-5 etc. So I have used a technique that helps with my service strategy. In tournaments, when playing someone for the first time, my first 6 serves are pre-planned (I often practice them in that order, which also helps with confidence and consistency when going from short to long-fast). All 6 serves are my best, and they are distinctly different to search for my opponent's weakness. Then, when it is time for the second towel break and my 7th service, I review which serves worked (often this amounts thinking "it was 2-4 and I served and tied it at 4-4" and I then know which serves I did. If I don't follow this pattern, sometimes I "forget" to use one of my good serves. And sometimes I will realize that even though my opponent occasionally misses, for example, a topspin serve, that I win more points when I serve heavy backspin.

I wish there was a method that could help me develop my touch on the reverse pendulum serve to where I can place heavy sidespin righthanded from the left side of the table short down the line. I've been trying to do it for so long but I cant seem to get it really spinny.

excellent points to increase skills/advancement. i will be heading back to the club even though i physically can't play competitively because i need a hip replacement. i'm not going to tell anyone though that my footwork is crippled. i've always had a good backhand drive and loop too, and will try to increase my forehand skills accordingly. shit i'm 56 now

Nice. I think that tactics are one of the most difficult parts of the game to find good information on.

no need to wish, if you don't have access to a coach you can often get better players you know to help you work on various parts of your game.
so plan what you are going to work on based on the type of player that has the same style as you as well as what coaches bring to bear elements of the game you want to pay attention too.
coaching dvd's can also be a great help, and you already have youtube for free. a robot if u can afford one works well too to supplement play and to up your reps to increase your skills.
where are you located and how old are you ?
