I appreciate your respect for the landowner. You are truly an ambassador of good will for our hobby.
The medallion with the lady and child is the Blessed Mother Mary with baby Jesus.
Your toy truck is an old fire truck from round the 1950's. My brother had one very similar to that one when we were little. I've been watching you for about a year now. Besides your cool finds I really enjoy your videography. That half the reason I watch your vlogs. Keep sharing and God bless.
I had one, too. I was one of only 2 girls in the neighborhood & made it my mission to do everything the guys did & had to same toys, bats, etc
Eastern yellow jackets. This year has been really bad with them. The warm winter of 2019-2020 allowed allot more of them to survive so there are a whole bunch of nests this summer
Some Lighter Fluid
and a Match is Sweet
Revenge , Honey Bee's
Bumblebees are cool
But the warrior bee's
I have no use for .
Yep
I 2nd that they are bad. First time I’ve had yellow jacket nest. 2 years in a row. Before that never never had them. I found the first nest. Got stung all over my ankles and back of legs. Next year . My husband was attacked all over his hands n arms
Donald Johnson Only thing is. To easy to catch a whole field on fire
Chris is holding it together better then I would! I would be rolling... Grasshopper and a girl scream. Hahaha.
Some of these beautiful scenery pictures need to be made into jigsaw puzzles. I'd buy them to work on!
I'm sure you're familiar with the big brown grasshoppers [locust] that fly .. many years ago a girl I was dating and I were going down a country gravel road with the windows down on my '63 Chevy Impala when one flew into her window and got all tangled up in her long blonde hair. I can still see and hear her thrashing around wildly and screaming at the top of her lungs. There are a few times in my life that I probably shouldn't have laughed out loud at something and that was definitely one of them though I did pull over and untangle the 'vicious little beast' from her hair which wasn't easy because she was hysterical and didn't settle down until I could produce all of the pieces. The legs [with the little barbs on them] were the most difficult. lol
😂
Very cool 👍👋👀💯
Skunks will dig up ground nests.
I really enjoy the way you present your adventures. Always look forward to Friday morning.
So will bears! Glad they didn't run into that one!
This is the time of year when skunks dig up ground nests , have seen it many times. That’s the only time I like skunks,
Yellow Jackets! Those stings seem to linger. Another good video Brad.
Thanks for sharing your adventure with us!
Brad and Chris, this weeks finds just so so. But the time spent on a wonderful day together with friends is astronomical and life enriching in memories. Chuck in NJ
The “reed” is, I believe, a cigar holder.
CORRECT!
You are correct. I’ve included original examples at the 12:35 mark.
I second that
Pay some attention to the shotshells you find. The Robin Hood Powder Co. started in 1904 in Swanton, VT. In 1906 they started making ammunition under the name Robin Hood Ammunition Co. In 1915 they sold out to Remington Arms. Robin Hood marked powder cans and the ammunition boxes and the RH head stamped shell are highly sought after by cartridge collectors. Even in bad condition. They never made a huge amount of ammo and distribution was limited mostly to the NE. Very little Robin Hood marked items are found in good condition.
This is fantastic trivia. My building I currently work at is on Robin Hood Lane in Swanton. Probably not a coincidence. I’ve been detecting for just a few months, but now this gives me something else to hunt. Thank you.
@@stephentracy7509 If you google Robin Hood Ammunition/ Powder Co. you will find several sites with photos then and now of the production facility as well as historical info. Original Robin Hood powder cans in good condition go for hundreds into the thousands of dollarseach. Shot shell boxes can be many thousands in fair condition.
Love the video as always! The toy fire truck is probably a “Tootsietoy” die cast item, it could be pre-war or post war I would have to check my catalogs. They switched to plastic in the mid-1950’s and were the largest die cast toy maker of the 20th century.
I love it when you have Chris or Eddy with you! Chris had me laughing when he tried to cover up his. There’s really nothing funnier than a guy screaming like a little girl when they have a bug on their face 😅😂. Love your reactions with each other! Thanks for the video’s!!
Hey Brad, the item at 14:35 is a Victorian mourning brooch. It would’ve held a photo of a deceased loved one. Very cool find!
Becca " brad , honey , are you ready to head into town and pick up some dinner ?" , Brad " yes ! But first , let me kick at this ground bees nest ." ...
Just seeing and hearing about the insects was worth the watch. The wiggly worm in the one hole was neat too. The anticipation of maybe seeing a bear was good too. I like the key and the finds in general. Stay safe.
Bears, skunks, opossum and sometimes raccoons like to eat the larva. I have a good video last year of a bear digging a nest out on our farm.
When you said that the land owners significant other was a farrier, all I could think was "poor woman, bless her heart!".....I was married to a farrier for almost 27 years.
I always enjoy these hunts. You feel part of the journey and you never know where you're going to end up.
Fire truck looks like a Tootsie Toys brand
I agree, most likely a Tootsie toy Chicago IL. They are pretty common find here in Illinois.
Looks like yellow jackets. Wasps can get pretty aggressive in the fall.
I had a bee keeper that told me that yellow jackets that live in the ground are an old variety and their sting is worse than the ones that make hanging nests.
@@katherineg5946 Yup.
I agree. Yellow jackets build their nests in the ground.
Nice old skeleton andwatch key. The bell was very cool. Thanks for sharing, good luck, happy hunting and take care.
Nice change of pace for you guys. Glad you found some cool items there in the yard. Love those mountains!! Cheers, Paige C.
you've REALLY got to watch out for those killer assault grasshoppers....they'll get you every time. lol
Thanks for the video. cheers
And we are attacked by evil flies-ticks)
Good video! Brad you are a good sport. That grass hopper visit was a lol.
100-acre woods and a bear...that would make you Christopher Robin, right?
Brad...you asked ratio of vinegar and sugar in pickles... 3 cups sugar...3 1/2 cups vinegar...... Also add turmeric, mustard seed, celery seed, allspice...play with the spices to get the flavor you are looking for..you can also add garlic... Good luck
Great one as always. Ground yellow jackets are the worst. They love overturned earth. I was digging a rustler's settlement of about 4 homes from the depression era. No one had ever dug there, and I was finding tons of stuff. I had my coil on its side and it was soft black dirt, and I was digging with my hands and taking a handful and moving it in front of the coil. I was really into it and looked at my hands and it dawned on me that both of my hands and arms were solid black and yellow clear up to my elbows. Took 15 minutes to very carefully remove those bees without me getting excited to give my fear scent to them.
And RUclipss recommendations brings us together once again 🙂
A one footed ox getting chased through a field by yellow jackets!!!
Great video as always. Hunt happy
Thank you for the adventure and seeing some nice finds ! You guys really got your exercise today ! Take care , stay safe and healthy wherever your next adventure takes you guys ! Doing well here in Kansas .
The hunk of slate with the attached quartz that you set your bounty on is beautiful. Probably some flint mixed in there too. Detecting around some of the old slate quarries in western Vermont might be interesting.
Well you ended the day with great finds. The country is green and plush, I enjoyed it today! The historian, photographer, metal detector... Just the best!
So your pin you found at 14:30 i believe would have had small arrangement of dried flowers under a domed glass cover. Anyways cool finds, cant wait for your next upload.
Or maybe a mourning broach that would have contained a small locket of the departed hair? Maybe?
@@NinfaCarpentergeorgia198 That was my thought, too. I have one with a braided loop of my Great-Great Grandmother's hair and a pfoto in the middle with a celluloid cover.
And the Ox with one leg we call Stumpy. 😂
That, or uni-ox...
Skunks love the nests of yellow jackets! If you are inclined, carry a small spray bottle of Dawn dish soap and water, you can wipe out the whole nest with it, as soon as it touches them they start dying, then the skunk can have a feast!
Remember Brad, always have a little container of Adolph's Meat Tenderizer with you for those unexpected bee stings. It works wonders!
Never knew that. Do you wet it and make a paste or what?
@@normawinton6832 just moisten the sting area with saliva or water. Shake a bit on the sting area and pat it in with your fingers. Helps to lessen the pain and neutralize the venom.
@@doctorfiber1 ty
Norma winton If you know someone who chews chewing tobacco. You can use that as well. Gross but affective
Sloppy mud works too.
That's a lot of hiking, Brad! The old homesite produced some really cool finds! Your car is probably a Tootsie toy. You fellas had a great day!😊💖
Awesome finds Brad, great haul there
Hi Brad, Hi Chris. Another great video. I thought the finds were very cool. Glad you didn’t have to use the knife 🔪🔫 or gun on the bear. 🐻 You just had to run like the wind from bees! Lol I’ve been there too. Hurt like crazy. I was lucky with only two stings as well. I was close to the side door of house . I didn’t think I could still run like that! Lol lol🐝🐝 Take care, Joyce. ARROW *🎱. 🇺🇸. ❤️ 🍁🍃🍂🎃
I very much enjoy tagging along on your hunts virtually, your narrations as well, i compared a novices RUclips detecting video to yours once and they were very flattered, so I'm not alone by any means. Just an fyi, an 'acre' is a measurement of surface area, not linear distance. They can be any shape so long as they contain the requisite area, so it really doesn't convey what distance was hiked😉😉 Happy hunting!!😁😁
I don't think Brad was suggesting that an acre is a measure of distance.
I'm assuming he's using the title "hiking 100 acres" as in "hiking the mountains of Vermont" rather than "hiking 100 miles home". 😁
That toy car looks like a Corgi .. nice finds thanks for sharing your video all the best from Ontario Canada!
For some reason you sounded like Crispin Glover in the begining shot. Maybe I had too much coffee. Green Mountain Coffee to be exact. I live that stuff. I look forward to your videos. Thanks.....Grant
Ants bite me plenty but the one time getting stung by wasp was like OW ya son of a ... After little to nothing being found at the sites up in the wooded area, I'm glad you were both able to find some great relics for the property owners at the own homesite 👍☺ I found my first 3 Merry Widows Tin just last week, I instantly thought, as you had, about the tin that you found.
That "key" you found is actually a tap key. Kegs of whatever they needed it for.
Brad I think the little toy is supposed to be a little fire truck with the hoses layed out in the bed for easy deployment. Thanks for another wonderful video...
Love the little car.
Would be cool to see you detect yards of old homes in Vermont. Door knocking isn't easy though.
Brad, If you get stung, immediately put some mud on it to draw out the poison. It works. I've been doing it for half a century.
Hi Brad & Chris, that big button at 8:15 could be made of Pewter ??. A cool hunt even though it all came in the last part of the day, good job guys. Thanks for sharing, much love. xx💖
I have a tree that grew around the fence. Fence an tree are in my back pasture.
Man, I love your videos. I have learned so much. Thanks from this beginner. Another great one.
That's charm is so cool! I have one like it! Mine is bigger and is made with blue agate & ivory and backed with black onyx.
Nice job guys!!!!
Nice job guys!
Awesome day for you guys not bad for the fines. 👍
I’m intrigued by the 4 frame like things you found. They look like they were meant to look like bamboo. Wish you had held it longer so I could see it..
me too. interesting
Yellow jackets are bad here in the South this year. They love going underground to build the nests. Down South they are aggressive and will chase you🤣
Yellow jackets in missouri are huge and yes they will chase you!
For the first time ever, I recognized everything you found before you did.
Love seeing the grassy field for a change!
I imagine the bees are yellow jackets . I keep a small bottle of meat tenderizer in my pack for stings. Sprinkle a bit of tenderizer in your hand, add waater to mike a paste and put it on the sting. Beats anything else I've tried.
TGIF GMMD!
Here in Arkansas, we call them ground yellow jackets and if you disturb them, they'll sting the snot out of you.
Vespula Germanica... I know them all too well. Yellow Jacket. We had a nasty bunch in our wall of our old home and...in the name of 'know your enemy', I researched all I could.
Great video again, Brad, Cool finds. oh... and "evaporator pan" and the fire box is an "arch" ... I sugared here in NH for 11 years...fun...too much work for an old man on his own :-)
It Still looks like the
Farm Property Yielded quite a few interesting finds. Sorry about the
Bee's and the Grasshopper
Have been there and done that, the moths
In Alabama are big as
Fruit Bats , One flew around my head one night near the porch light and I had a Fit and a half .....Lol
Great Video Looks Like
You 2 had a great time and a bunch of Laughs !
Take Care Brad
and Chris , better luck next time !
Thank you for sharing
Yellowjackets. I have one in my yard and made the mistake of running my mower over it. They hurt. I got stung on my head and ankle. Both were sore a day later like I was bruised. If you were to dig them up it would be a giant paper hive. It looks like multiple giant red wasp nests stacked together.
I had a nest that I ended up putting a window screen over after the sun went down. I then poured a combination of oil/gas down and let it sit till the next morning. At which time, I lit it...bastards, I hate 'em! They're not like Honey or Mason bees that have a purpose...they're more like mean, oversized mosquitos!
Cool button good work guys
That shack has to be as old as Lincolns cabin! Thanks Brad!
Spunback button was pretty, and the croatal bell looks tombac!
Yello jackets I was stung when I was about 10 15 times from a ground nest in Meriden, Ct
Hey Brad, really enjoy your videos. Keep up the hunt. - from Indiana.
Those Yellow Jackets are evil been there. That looks like a belt buckle for a web belt the way it locks in the back. Nice watch winder, cameo & silver necklace piece. And a cigar holder which is odd to find. Good finds all around.
Ah, good ole yellow jackets...or, "yellah jackets", as we call them down here. I always find their nests with lawnmowers. It's truly a sight to behold lol.
Those would be Yellow Jackets. Tiny, nasty and moderately aggressive.
“Moderately?” Guess you have never encountered MAINE yellowjackets!
@@gutfinski 😂. Never have.
White face hornets are nuts, they like yellow jackets , have sentries that watch the perimeter of a nest. If you get close they will attack.
Because he stepped in that nest and they didn't follow him for 100 yards and continue to sting , they are moderately aggressive. I have seen certain types of yellow jackets be so aggressive they end up in your pockets , burrowing in your hair and ears just to continue stinging over a hundred yards away from the nest you stepped in. These guys appeared to stay close to the nest , so they weren't to bad. But you don't know until it's to late, how far they will follow you.
Bob Almendinger Yup! Once the first one that sees you sends the pheromones out, they all follow and go into a frenzy. No fun.
I once had some chase me for a block while I was at a flat out run. Nasty little boogers
@@aurinslady7119 if you get the scent of the nest on you , it's like radar. They will follow and sting for as long as they see fit.
This time of year and in the ground, they are likely Yellow Jackets. Often they are invisible until you walk into their space. Then they get pissed and swarm all over the invader. Good thing you saw them when you did. Quarter Hoarder and I happened across them several weeks ago and were able to avoid them. Last week Quarter Hoarder and Geoff hit a spot and Geoff’s son stepped into their space and was stung about 30 times.
Thanks for sharing
If the property is abandoned where did the cat come from and who takes care of it?
Enjoyed the video.
You found a few things. Can't allways get a big haul. Still you have more to add to the collection
My favorite find of yours today was the toy car. Pretty cool. Would love to see it cleaned up.
Fire truck from the 30's nice find!
Mary and Jesus pendant.
What you found that looks somewhat like a "reed" is in fact a cigar holder, sold and used in the 1920s. Even sold in cigar stores just after the 2nd World War.
BTW,those yellow jackets don’t sting they bite. Stinging bees usually can only sting you once. Yellowjackets can bit you as many times as they want, that is why they are so dangerous. I got bit twice a couple of weeks ago because I ignored a nest. Great adventure.... Thanks
A yellow jacket does sting, but the barbs on the stinger are much finer & because of that they can sting you over & over again
@@cridgeway666
Exactly! They do sting!
Another great video. You've mentioned in past videos about 'displaying' some of your finds. It would be interesting to see how and what is in your display.
Hard work = COOL Finds...!
iron porkchop (ox shoe) I live near Buffalo, NY so yes Larkin was a huge catalog company back in that day. I like the "silver" button.
and you could get small items of furniture as a reward for buying their products. the furniture goes pretty high at auctions.
My sisters husband turned over a pretty good size rock on their land and was stung about twenty times by ground hornets. Luckily he got to the emergency room quickly because he was in pretty bad shape. Turns out he was allergic to the venom. He now carries on of those pins to inject his self if it happens again. Stay safe and better luck next hunt.
Epipen is the word you are looking for. Every first aid kit should have one. Blessings, Dot
Dot Cassilles Thank you.
That piece of jewelry might have held a tin type photo.
Yellow Jackets Nests, they got me a month ago, I got stung all around my neck and arms. Was that reed used for smoking cigars?
I have never seen Hornets in the ground, YellowJackets and some Bumble Bees are ground dwellers. JJ
@@johnjacobs1625 you are right, I made a mistake in my response, Those yellow jackets were all over me before I knew it. I disturbed their next when I lifted a down branch during a clean up after a storms on our 3rd lot.
Vermont is beautiful! Hope to visit there someday!
Where is Eddy? Just wondering.
You didn't talk about one of the finds @ 18:15 . Either a bell or a candle sniffer. I've found some fragments of bells shaped similar to that on a horse trail near me.
People are saying that they're yellow jackets, but if they really were bees rather than wasps, then they were almost certainly bumble bees, which are also ground-nesters and aggressive.
They didn't fly like bumble bees...
They are not bumble bees. They are yellow jackets bumble bees mostly build nest up high in trees and building. Very seldom do they have a nest in ground. And mud dobbers are ground wasp and are not aggressive unless you swat at them. They don’t swarm sting like yellow jackets.
Yes, definitely yellow jackets and quite aggressive! Had 3 nests of them on my property here in SC this summer. Nasty rascals! Sorry bud, need to carry some sting kill with you this time of year. Blessings on you guys!
You mentioned about using Vicks vapor rub for bug repellent, I don't know about the repellent but it is used for congestion relief not sore muscles.
I'd hazard to say that the Yellow Jacket nest would have been excavated a bit more thoroughly had it been done by a bear. As a couple others have already noted, skunks will raid the nests too.
The larvae in the brood cells are the main prize, but I'm sure that any predators who can tolerate the stings won't hesitate to eat the adult insects as well. Here in the vicinity of my late parents home on the Olympic Peninsula in WA, raccoons also raid the nests, and will do so repeatedly if a queen survives to reestablish the colony.
When I find a opened nest, I try not to give the survivors any chance. Last Summer was the first year in the past several that I did not get stung while just minding my own business (not stepping on a nest) by either wasps or hornets. That experience gets old in a hurry!
Thanks for a break from other things going on.
Yellow Jacket nest. Mowed over one yesterday while mowing my lawn! I survived!
