  • So I'm minding my own business not expecting anything weather wise when funnel clouds west of town prompt davenport to issue a tornado warning for cedar rapids. I had to scramble to get my camera and I managed to catch the end of the noaa weather radio warning along with the sirens being activated.

Neat siren start up and ambience. Like how the sirens howling echoes and fades in and out from the siren rotation. I live 800 miles away from Cedar Rapids in Dallas, and we get tornado warnings during the warmer months of the year. We have had a tornado warning on December 26th, 2015 when the weather conditions were right and a massive tornado formed in Rowlett, Texas at night. It was scary.

As someone on the extreme edge of SW Cedar Rapids (1 mile NE of Fairfax), the warning went out on the radio, I went outside, saw the funnel, and the darn thing dissolved before the sirens ever went off here. Definitely not a fun afternoon though for anyone in the path of that storm. Like you I was watching it on radar, and it definitely was a tiny cell, looked like a regular supercell thunderstorm.

I was caught off guard when I heard there was a warning for CR, and I thought, “Davenport, you trigger-happy spotters, what have you done now?”

Exactly. I got the alert on my apple watch and my iphone, and I was like "ugh what now?". Did see a funnel off to the north (I'm in SW Cedar Rapids by Fairfax), but by the time I ran inside and got my car keys, the funnel dissipated. I saw it on radar too, little tiny cell with no rotation, then I got the alerts and the sirens went off. Not sure who triggered that alert, but it was an interesting evening.

It should not take that long for the sirens to sound after the warning is issued. They should immeadietly sound once the warning is issued.

No, they shouldn't. Tornado warnings are often issued for segments/polygons of a county at a time. Sirens in a city only need sounded if the tornado warned storm is expected to, or is tracking to affect the city. If a tornado warning is issued for a county and the storm isn't coming anywhere near you, your sirens don't need to go off, no need to panic people because of a tornado nowhere near your city. Often, they don't need to go off right away because dispatchers are working with spotters and the NWS on the specific details of the storm.

PublicWeather it should all be automatic from the VTEC. Check out Nick Oakman’s video of “possible funnel cloud” near DVN, the sirens go off during the first part of the EAS, that’s how it should work. When seconds count, you don’t have minutes.

They did sound the minute the severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the derecho Aug 10 2020. This same person has a video of that.

365 days later we would hear these sirens once more...if only the WEA was built for SVRs with “WHAT...WHERE...WHEN...IMPACT...” information at the time.
