  • A lot admittedly didn't go into this video. Much of what you know from GP Legend and SNES F-Zero REALLY works in Maximum Velocity as well. But hopefully this could help people getting into Maximum Velocity. It's still a top level F-Zero game even if it doesn't have the usual F-Zero characters/machines you knew and loved.

F-Zero, F-Zero GP Legend, and F-Zero Climax skills can translate in Maximum Velocity. After all, it was GP Legend and Climax which were BASED on Maximum Velocity. And Maximum Velocity is the SNES formula perfected.

I feel that a video like this could really help people playing this game for the first time. I always get nervous about people discussing MV and wondering if they know how to actually play the game or if they’re going to complain about “awful handling” and hate the game for that.

Wasn't sure if anyone made a guide for Maximum Velocity, so I suppose it was worth a try. But if it does help anyone who struggles with that game, then I consider it a success.
But yeah I share your sentiments on the matter. It's the same reason I did this with Climax.

@@custom-r I feel MV has kind of an unfairly negative reputation amongst the gaming community, even to some in the F-Zero fanbase. It’s mostly for the handling debacle, but also the fact that this game doesn’t have Captain Falcon, Mute City, or Big Blue, the first three things that come to most people’s minds with the word F-Zero. And the game itself being a “rehash” of the SNES game no doubt contributed to a lot of people dismissing it over time (like the new fans introduced from F-Zero X, as you said in your comment on Slayercoon’s review of the game). MV definitely needs more love.
GP Legend is seen as much better for most people for a lot of surface level things it did. The familiar F-Zero elements are back, it has the Boost/Energy system and ruleset from the 3D games, there’s a Story Mode, and the game has a lot more content overall. In my opinion, though, it’s the poor execution of all those elements that drags the game down. Haven’t played Climax, but the videos I’ve watched seem like it doesn’t fix the fundamental problems of GPL.

@@MiraiND I think more than that, Climax was kinda the band-aid. Climax did at least add the missing Master Mode (not sure why that was out of GPL). Additionally, CPU racers are a bit harder (they can even molly whop a complacent player on Novice, like if they fell off at Lost Way and respawned). BUT, yeah there are some big issues.
Namely, the game is much more boost to win. There's nothing wrong with that. But GPL had players having to learn how to use the boost. It wasn't just piling speed for speed's sake. It was maybe a balanced version of the Super Jet while still being like X/GX's system. Also a lot of the tracks in Climax range from being too short or being too narrow (like all of Platinum Cup). They did give every machine much needed buffs, so that makes more machines playable in high level meta. (too many machines in GPL could relatively be outclassed if they didn't have good speed retention or were really heavy and bad at turning).
Even worse I think in Climax's case is that it also removed key modes. Like Practice mode for one. It adds Watch race, but that's useless. A Replay Mode like Maximum Velocity would be much more useful since it shows button presses and helps time attackers. Also, while awesome to skip levels, Climax can be broken so hard because of how the speed works in there. In a sense, Climax definietly fits more for 3D fans as it offers different turning and makes the speed cap less harsh. But it was just GPL leftovers, but with less of the game itself. Ah, there was also Survival, but still. GPL did handle a bit of fundamental stuff better. The problem was it was too easy.
Oh also forgot to mention. GX and GPL both did something really good that all F-Zero games should have: free button mapping. While MV lets one change controls, Climax does the same, but oddly one has to unlock extra control styles through Survival.

When I first got this game in ‘01 I hated it.. then in ‘03 I spend the better part of a year mastering the game, and got good enough to complete all difficulty levels. The tracks with the vortices that spin you around though… infuriating! It’s a fantastic and intense game if you take the time to learn the handling.

So a bit of Kim info since I've been including that on the sheet:
Its boost start has the widest availability, taking almost 3 seconds to burnout after being available after just less than 1 second.
Its maximum speed is 400, and it's an inconsistent speed as the machine then falls down to 390 before accelerating up again.
Its boost speed is also the slowest of any machine, 523, dropping to 516. And for six seconds? No wonder the Open Circuit takes 2 and a half minutes.
Its acceleration is weirdly gear-ratio'd. Up to 120 it gains 5kph each frame. From there it dips a bit to 260. There a fair bit more to 320. From 320 to 400 you can actually almost SEE the number incrementing one at a time!
    Its turning is... Passable.
It's actually quite slow in terms of facing the angles, but on normal ground it also never really loses grip.
But one fascinating thing is that the jump is fairly consistently 1 second, unless you're boosting and holding Down at the same time.
It's also oddly ever-so-slightly STURDIER than the Hot Violet and takes less time to fix up on Pit Lane.

In my opinion the best 2d f zero game, its absolutely slept on, it may not be as fast as gp legend or climax, but the thing climax and velocity have in common on master mode is how intense it is, but i find velocity’s master mode to be the good kind of intense, being less bumpy than climax makes it really fun to get speed boosts from bumps by ai racers

I feel like im the crazy guy who sees the explosive obstacles as beneficial extra boost- and turnhelpers rather then traps.
A well utilised bomb can make turning so much smoother and give extra speed, but of course you gotta be insane to try this.
Works with mines just as well

While F-Zero X was the very first F-Zero game I ever played in my life, Maximum Velocity was the first I could beat in Master Class. I gotta say it was a struggle for 12 y/o me, but it was worth it for that sweet as heck Fighting Comet.
Also, I kinda did the opposite of what you said about GP Legend since I didn't touch that game until after I beat MV's Master. I gotta say that my playstyle transition from game to game stayed mostly the same, but with the addition of more boosts during a lap and side attacks. I also felt that GPL was more forgiving, why is it the only game that lacks a Master Class?

Based on observations of franchises having identity shifts, I got a good theory.
It has something to do with the anime. By that time I estimate they were trying to reach a demographic that's either younger, or very foreign to F-Zero. To have a game come with it, they wanted to make sure that the players had a nice impression, so they did take out the very difficult AI we had in MV. (Expert was still tough in MV). While giving young players credit, most times, they will struggle a bit in games like F-Zero before finally mastering them. It's only natural.
Thing is, they went so far as to take out Master as well, since it was brutal in MV, and GPL was just more than a MV skin. Adding 3D stuff like attacks and energy=HP made it much easier for the other fans who had by then, felt ignored when MV just seemed to be a reboot of F-Zero out of nowhere, after X. It's likely far fetched, but when a game in a series known for brutal racing is suddenly easier, I can't help but imagine they did this to try and get a game catered to less experienced players. They at least did keep most of it feeling like MV. But, well, anyone playing can see how easy it is to win. The true challenge lies in beating world times and e-reader ghosts.
But it is odd how GPL came out in the same year as GX. Polar opposites in difficulty to be sure. Though I do imagine 3D players had a struggle transitioning to 2D play for GPL (I know I did).

@@custom-r Huh, that's interesting and it explains why a game in a generally difficult series is so easy outside of personal challenges like beating Expert with Crazy Bear or getting gold rank in missions mode plus what you mentioned. But this may also bring up some thought that the anime nor GP Legend didn't get a great marketing and support in the west because IIRC the anime just got dubbed until like half of it and Climax stayed in Japan, tho I cannot be sure. Thanks for the info BTW.

To me the worst and hardest challenge is the "knight cup" on master mode especially on Synobazz (Explosive Circuit) using the "fighting comet" i suffered a lot with this machine "glass cannon" and fun fact when you master the "Drift Style" on this game you automaticly will like to play more with heavy machines like "Silver thunder" or "Jet vermilion" and off course the "master mode" become less hard but still very unfair but beatable XD
