0:53 I do this in my spare time, sometimes before the session day starts
1:18 I have a song from a subscriber-he just needs someone else’s ears on it
….this is very common for writers, producers, artists, players
3:50 My rig for playing along and playing through some ideas
    4:31 Here’s the song, “Marie”
8:39 This feels so much like a Ry Cooder meets The Band. VERY cool.
9:25 This kind of stuff is some my absolute favorite music
    9:47 I have some thoughts…
11:40 Ry’s stuff is very carefully constructed in terms of what sticks out when…
12:13 I’m intentionally leaving the “session guy on modern radio” hat OFF.
12:42 I’m a huge fan of all these 70s artists that this reminds me of.
13:14 But there are a lot of things happening kind of all the time
14:21 If we were on a session, these would be the ideas thrown out by the players
15:27 The chord movement here is AWESOME
    16:42 Some other influences I hear…
17:16 Let’s check out this chord move again…
    18:02 “Grace don’t come cheap, but it’s free.” :)
18:49 THE MODULATION…let’s figure this out
19:35 That’s a 2- 5 1 in A. He got there walking down to a 4- chord in F# that IS the 2- in A. Get it?! That is SO COOL

Just wanted to say "thank ya kindly" to folks who took the time to share some feedback. I greatly appreciate it. If you're curious, I bit the bullet a signed up a bunch o' fantastic Nashville session players. I've got 10 songs for a full album they'll be beating into shape. They'll take on everything but the acoustic, which my poor pocketless soul will handle. I figure that'll put a nice rough edge on things :-). Here's a rough go at a chords sheet for the curious...

Totally agree. Listening back, the guitar and banjo(?) panned hard left and right were kind of conflicting and pulling attention away from the vocal. I almost wanted to hear more of a bed of music, like a B3 or some mellow acoustic strumming that provides an anchor. Then the vocal comes in front and center, and the guitars (left or right) come in the breaks. But yeah the core of the vocal and song is just awesome, you can't fake that.

Definitely a lot going on and agree with everyone getting into the pocket, also recommend bringing the volcals up a bit. The chord structure is very advanced and tells a story of both characters "very cool". Some other recommendations I've read comments to include a church or wurlitzure organ? That may be a little bit to much, maybe a Rhodes wold fit a bit better. Light percussion like snare with brushes? I liked the abrupt ending ..kinda feels like she says "end of story" and a head wag!
Very cool on the porch summer evening jam feeling!

The song it's pretty cool, the chord progression is incredible (at least for me since im a pretty basic guitar player/songwriter) I agree with the advice given in this video and also I believe adding a basic electric piano and maybe a bass could help to tight things up, the voice remaninds me of hugh Laurie (he played dr. Agreed. A punchy Wurlitzer with tremolo taking a lot of the chord duties, plus a really 70s style picked and/or muted P Bass would be killer in this song.

Well i see the composer has already hired himself a band, so i guess comments are a little redundant.
But for what it's worth i thought Justin nailed it,it felt
like everything was fighting for the same spot.
But the vocals were so strong they really didn't need that much help, even a single acoustic guitar backing might have actually been enough.
That said there was plenty of cool playing so hopefully the band found a home for everything.
There isn't another channel quite like this, one of my favourite things is seeing what really makes up a song, where every note earns its place.
Justin is a consumate pro in this regard and such an
outstanding guitarist, it's fascinating watching him
    at work.
So I'm grateful RUclips threw in this suggested channel, why it thinks I'm also preoccupied with cage fighting i don't know, but I'm sure they know best.

I had similar critique of the track; love - LOVE - the vocal quality but I had a hard time finding a groove. I don't necessarily think it was a timing issue but maybe more a lyrical issue. Try adding more intentional repetition to the lyrics. In my humble opinion, perhaps continue the vocal harmony parts more throughout the B part/chorus, the vocal doubling parts were too short or sporadic, which distracted my focus. Consider only having one additional voice on the harmony sections to keep the mix less cluttered. With the style of this song, too many layers would "muddy the waters," and take away emphasis of the vocal. Good stuff Stephen!

dude. this is 🔥. I'd love to hear less percussive elements (I stopped the video to type this so you're probably getting ready to say the same thing) with a more cohesive mix... it needs some "glue". The artist's voice and harmonic sensibilities reminds me of a guy I used to play with a lot named Adrian Duke (check that guy out!) and so in my head I'm hearing B3 organ all day long in there. This kind of harmony and a great keys player are like honey and butter on this kind of biscuit 😆

I hope this feedback helps, I am a real rookie so this is from the viewpoint of a music fan. Dislikes - tuning is off between instruments (noticeable early on, maybe it's just the slide), the stereo spread felt too big for me, needs a little percussion to establish the beat.
Good stuff - I like the front porch feel, the singer has a great voice, lots of well executed chords, really nice textural sound.

Wow. There is a lot of cool stuff going on there.
Maybe a bit too busy though? I also had to give it a couple listens before I really "got it". This would be soooo cool stripped down just a bit.
In the intro, I would be tempted to strip it down until the accented portion just before the vocals begin. Is there an issue with one instrument not being on tempo in the first bar? There was just A LOT going on in the start. Especially for an acoustic piece. Maybe help bring the listener along a bit slower by introducing instruments into the song slower? That would help build to crescendo.
The ending was odd. It just left me hangin'. A fade out would be really cool.
The backup vocals were a little hard for my pea-brain to process at first. But I eventually came around. Making sure that the stereo levels are equal, side to side, on both vocals, in those portions, would help the "normal" listener to process what is going on, maybe? Maybe the levels are off on my end? Maybe my ears are still on vacation this morning?
I thought the song structure was excellent. Interesting chord progression. Good overall song length. However, the performance seemed to stay at one level....no crescendo/decrescendo.
I'd like to hear better mix level management, all around. There is a "magic" in the mix-down when it will all meld into one. I would also rather that the finished recording had all channels in both ears. IMHO, stereo only works for things like trem, delays, rotaries, etc. But that is mainly preference based.
Just needs a little polish in post maybe? Some optical compression would help. Maybe a tiny bit of mixdown reverb? Maybe I'm just too nit-picky this morning?
Overall though, very cool! I'm a fan too!

Amazing work as always Justin! I actually sent you an email, I love your perspective on this stuff. I’m just 22 so I’m still getting started at this whole life thing.

I like that Nashville players only do 3 hour slots. That's what me and my songwriting partner do. After 3 hours it's all downhill. But those first 3 hours are magical.

I should say that it can and often does go much longer than that. :)

Some cool tones ..... the vocal sounds like hes got a ton of character and needs to really be out front and uncluttered....

When you say “expensive to have a band cut it in Nashville”… Ballpark?

Damn near perfect song -- Sometimes the voice2 commenting the song is a little too much - A little Too much going on towards the end of the song. The start of the song is perfect Americana like some of the greatest band play it. Melody reminds me of "Still crazy after all these years" by Paul Simon.

Art is never finished, just abandoned - Leonardo Da Vinci I'd add a church organ rhythm/bass track. Any more guitar is a hat on a hat.

Great deconstruction of this song. There is a lot of great things happening, but it's too much. All the other stuff gets in the way of the vocal. Very cool basic tracks, but sometimes less is more...

Great vocal and performance. But too busy throughout. No build up in arrangement, and the complex chords need a piano/organ layer. Which part is the chorus 😊

Locked into the rhythm and sitting just a little behind the beat. It’s a whole world of nuance. Lots of info online

My opinion, there is too much going on. If it is true that you get 30 to 45 seconds to impress a record producer, I think they will give up after that. In some parts the vocal cannot be heard clearly. You have to listen to this several times to get a grip on it. This is just my opinion, but I would redo this and try to get the listener to keep on listening.

Too much compression and too much going on/too many similar tracks. It sounds like 2 different takes of the same song played simultaneously.

Absolutely fair. Although, I gotta say, the idea of overlaying 2 different takes of the same song is just the sort of thing I would love, even if everyone else rightly hated it :-). Of course, if I could do it like Bill Frisell and Julian Lage, then I might be in business: ruclips.net/video/CDzpq94HBGk/видео.html
