  • Enormously popular child actress Margaret O’Brien (Meet Me in St. Louis) touches the heart in this classic adventure of a young orphan sent to live at the dark and foreboding English estate of her widowed uncle and his crippled son, played by fellow child sensation Dean Stockwell. Led by a strong will and a stubborn temperament, Mary Lennox (O’Brien) discovers the existence of a secret garden, the history of which slowly reveals the mystery of her uncle and his son’s embittered lives. Eventually, the beloved garden becomes the only hope for their happiness and restoration from the haunting grip of the past. Produced by Clarence Brown, the film is based on the popular novel by acclaimed children’s author Frances Hodgson Burnett (Little Lord Fauntleroy). A dazzling technical effect aptly derived from The Wizard of Oz brings the secret garden alive in a radiant color sequence, making it, and the film, a magical place you’ll have to experience yourself!

Great trailer! Never knew Dean Stockwell was a child star! I just read he was the boy in Anchors Aweigh! Loved him in so many things! Great to see Elsa Lanchester & Gladys Cooper reunited in a movie after seeing them in The Bishop’s Wife (1946) together! Hope to find this online to watch! I love this story! Thank you! 😊♥️
Update: Rented it from Amazon Prime! Also saw it was able to be rented on RUclips! Loved it! ♥️

This is now the fourth Secret Garden I’ve seen, first one in black-and-white. I like Margaret O’Brien in The Canterville Ghost and Meet Me in St. Louis.

This shows how people’s attention spans have changed. It’s a good trailer but today people would find this trailer long to sit through.

Alice became the actress who's not the lead actress, life truly has really nice surprises. God bless, Proverbs 31

Warners is going a bit over the top with this description. The "dazzling technical effect" is just switching from black-and-white to Technicolor for the sequences that take place inside the garden, after the children have restored it. The color cinematography is beautiful, but in 1949, 15 years after 3-strip Technicolor made its feature-film debut in 'House Of Rothschilid', it was hardly "dazzling" and no more "technical" than an ordinary change of scene.
