In general, less gear equals more music. Not always, of course, but there are definite tradeoffs for how people spend their studio time... more time on hardware and sound design means less time on other things, like composition and production.
That's exactly what I think is the best way. To get XYZ, and then learn it 100%. And then use it all the time. Only THEN you know whether is works for you or not. I am very interested in the OT, too. But I have more than enough great gear already that I haven't fully explored.
As someone who did a *sizeable* gear purge a few years ago, I don't think you'll look back. It's just stuff. Years from now you'll chuckle at the going price for some of that stuff, but you'll have a more finely tuned setup by then so no worries. Having said that, I'll be chilling in these comments 🍿🥤
The analog four MK2 would be an awesome addition. You already know your way around the sequencer and it can be used as a 4 voice analog synthesizer, an amazing drum machine and even a standalone groovebox
I’ve owned every “modern” Elektron box (still have Syntakt, Digitakt, and Octatrack). Sold the A4MK2, but it’s the one I constantly think about buying again…
interesting. I started the other way around and „just“ got an Octatrack (of course it did not stop there). Its flexibility to play a centerpiece in „what you want to do right now“ is just mindblowing. And the sequencing of Elektron is just sublime in my opinion.
I sold off a bunch of my gear because I realized that it was all purchased haphazardly as I was learning the synth hobby. Sold it off and bought some stuff with much more thought towards the whole.
@@LiamKillen ha yours was on a much higher level! I basically wanted a Grandmother to start the hobby but instead got a Microbrute, and 1500 bucks worth of random nonsense... Alesis sr16, zoom r8 mixer/recorder, whole bevy of pedals, and a Minilogue. It was such a jumble that I wasn't even playing anymore. Sold off everything but the synths. Got a drumbrute, pedals that made sense, built a small eurorack kit around Morphagene, finally got the grandmother, sp404mk2, and an rk008 to sequence it all... Oh and I just got a 1010 bluebox to mix and record, although I do have a cheap behringer 1208 mixer that I don't have space for currently... If you haven't tried the rk008 you absolutely have to get one. Its amazing.
I’m already about 3 weeks ahead I sold most of my gear. Kept my rev2 and rytm and got a push 2 and some oft synths. A good choice. Everything has to go into Ableton anyways.
It does not have to be this way. I do it all live and record straight to a stereo recorder. I used Live since Version 1, but now that I have all the classic machines that I always wanted, I don't even turn on my laptop :-D
RMX 1000 and also the RMX 500 are just brilliant as "end of the line effects" - great fun, and the RMX1000 is surprisingly quite configurable - Highly recommended!
Great vid. Trying to purge my own collection atm so this was good timing! That's really good to know re: the gain onf Go Mixer Pro X. I had the previous Go Mixer Pro and also found that it was just waaaay too quiet, even if I cranked the single volume dial up. Also, found it pretty annoying that the headphone monitor level is the same as the recording level... if they could split the two out and have separate controls maybe that would solve for the gain issue? Ah well. I also sold my Infinite Jets recently. I just really couldn't get on with it, and the whole time I was using it I was wishing I had a Microcosm instead lol.
For those of us on the recovery side of GAS (hopefully!) this video is a very useful overall reference. I'm planning a similar purge, but have yet to actually sell off any used gear. Just wondering about your suggested resale venue. Reverb?
I have quite a bit of fun with my Pro3. Definitely a desert island synth. May be slightly large, for what you’re looking for, but definitely has excellent integration for someone who doesn’t want to sit at the computer, but needs a hearty sequencer and gorgeous synth along with it. Edit for spelling
It makes sense for you as a RUclips, Liam. When your agenda is to show new gear all the time, then that's the #input stream. Wenn there's no #output stream, your place will be flooded after a while :-D With most of us hobbyist musicians, it's a different setting I think. I personally am at this point too, where I have a tad too many devices. Not sure what will leave the house, but I am not thinking about getting more or different stuff. I have no need to constantly change, especially since I now have what I always wanted and it's just as awesome as I anticipated it to be. But I am only doing this for my own pleasure. That being said, I am in the process of adjusting my decade-old thinking. Which is that I want all my gear to be available with any option at all times. Which would boil down to a huge mixing console and a plethora of MIDI routing. I simply do not have the space for that. And quite costly it would be, too. And even IF I had set this monster up, I only have two arms and one brain to keep it all running. I do everything on the fly, no computers, recording just straight to a stereo-mix. Sitting in front of a screen while nudging audio blocks back and forth plus staring at PlugIns is just not my thing. Having only one device isn't doing it for me either, but I will not buy any more things now.
I'm learning to be more thoughtful in my GAS purchases. Ever since I started buying gear, I've just bought things to try, if I really liked it I'd keep it, if not I'd sell. But I'm sick of buying and selling gear! I'm getting into the Behringer System 100 modules at the moment as I had a semi-modular System 100 synth back in the 90s/early 2000s which I loved and still dream of. Sure, the Behringer is more of a clone of the 100m, but the sound is very similar.
The trick is to buy used. I literally bought a Hydrasynth the other day just to confirm that I don't actually want but it'll cost me nothing to try out for a month.
I never got into the Microcosm actually. Was just way too random when I tried to start with just a basic echo and get weird from there, it just didn't do that. So, wasn't for me. Sold it on reverb for the same price!
Can you imagine an Octatrack, Digitakt, Digitone combo? The tough thing for you is those little bits and bobs probably do well for social media posts. As an artist you are better with a consistent, streamlined set of gear but as a content creator you can grab more views with lots of variety.
I actually really enjoy learning about new gear but am becoming more and more streamlined with my gear. Infact here’s some gear that I’ll never sell: ruclips.net/video/e0F2FvJswUA/видео.html
I imagine an Octatrack MK3 that can switch between two modes, original, and new. Where the new mode would be like an expanded digitakt with overbridge. Plus polyphonic sample playing.
The Orba is so fun…but I was really turned off by how they kept promising a quantize feature for the OG before just abandoning it to release the Orba 2. From what I understand, the software is totally different but it makes the original seem like a rushed release and makes me wary of trusting Artiphon for anything.
I'm currently going through a "Does this spark joy?" process - bingeing one by one on each piece of gear that I've been neglecting just in case the problem was me being too lazy to get up the learning curve. The Mono Station won me over. Next up is the Boutique JP-08 - cute faders but does everything have to sound like it's gone through a Jupiterize filter rather than a Jupiter filter?
@@maarzt it was mostly figuring out how to get the sequencer to put in more expression to make the sequence more dynamic and exciting. Learning how to use the velocity and the mod track in the mod matrix was a big part of that. Tricks like modulating the distortion to add a speck of bite to particular notes. Also finding the sweet spots in the synth - it seemed to switch too easily from bland to over-the-top or from thin to muddy. It's not one of those synths where even the raw oscillator output sounds cool (e.g. Cat or 2600). The sweet spot on the Mono Station wasn't as easy for me to find as on the Neutron or the MicroKORG etc. Using the LFO in sync mode is handy too - either like a second envelope or to add syncopation.
I finally got a digitakt and so model:samples has to go. Too much overlap and I never connected with that thing....but still, way too easy to just say "maybe I'll keep it". Keeping the model:cycles though. It and Volca Drum are just great. I bought a POM 400 and POM 16 that I got for dirt cheap and they just look so cool that I can't bring myself to get rid of them. Honestly don't think I ever will. That POM 400 is always going to turn heads. I've got that Cre8audio case and think it's just such a great portable rig, can't say enough good things about it to someone getting into modular. Microcosm don't have but happy with Zoia (and its readily available patches to download). Get a Deluge. Takes some time but my fav dawless hub (over mpc live, digitakt, octatrack, beatstep pro, circuit tracks, etc). I'm in the market to switch out my mpc one to force.
Great video, hit it with a like :) , Unrelated question: I got a microcosm hologram for my small setups, do you go stereo in on it? or just mono? not sure what the trend is with this device since I feel I can save a channel if I just go mono in with it (and use a summed/mono stereo signal in if I have to).
If you took to the digitakt… I can’t recommend the octatrack enough. there’s a whole world in there… Speaking of worlds in boxes, my microcosm comes in the mail tomorrow (*heavy breathing*)
I recommend the octatrack but the learning curve is steep if you're prepared to put in the time it's worth it. But It can set there collecting dust if not.
Yeah thing is at 32 bit 196khz there's so much headroom it's possible to do so much with au plug-ins and these new macos m2 monster machines. Then there's cool mini stuff coming out like the t8 which takes up far less space and energy than behringer analog etuff.
Hiiii Heard u mention MooG audio and that u live nearby the store .. I live pretty close to the store too .. my question is do you live in Montreal like I do…… If not well OK then… But if you do I like having such a good creator like you in Montreal❤️🔥
@@LiamKillen I've had it for over a year. The problem is that the effects are too digital. Also the filters are not that great and tempo syncing isn't that accurate IMO. Anyways to each their own i guess
a few of my friends love pocket ops, i.... dont like them at all hahahaha, but i dont hate them, if someone likes them cool... not for me cool red look with the digitak (ive been considering one of those, but to be honest i dont need it, so haha if you have it in like 5 months hit me up, id probably buy it from ya) Hey reallllly cool that you are going to be open with communication about the sp303.... sucks when gear is broken, but awesome of you for response, big respect yeah fuck that stylophone, its mostly an instagram thing i think annnnyways, where is your strega, get one of those beasts, they are so sick ive got your next whiskey in kansas
@@LiamKillen totally valid, I generally agree with you i dont need any pos tho hahah but i tell you what.... that sp404mk2 is sooooo sick, and ive been using it like crazy lately, and your channel helped me learn it
Thing about the RC-505 is that the MK2, so much better on paper, is riddled with problems such that dedicated users are emphatically stating to not get one. So, do we go with the old model? This dilemma has me not getting one (if and until they fix the Mk2).
Thank you ! Glad to help - also if you want a community version of this video, take a look at my Discord - if you're not already a member: discord.gg/xj8J2xJuBP
I like your videos! I'm just wondering: why call it 'dawless gear'. Like, isn't it just gear? Of course a synthesizer or groovebox is dawless. Why say it? My shoes are dawless, but I just call them shoes. My synth doesn't have a bathroom, but I don't call it bathroomless. Know what I mean? Okay that's all byeee 💘
Ummm.. Mc707 and minibrute 2s are NOT high end gear:) Mid tier at best (dont get me wrong, I use Minibrute 2S with my modular, its a great synth and sequencer, but not high end - DSI Mopho will leave it in the dust and it is 10 years older. See stuff like Analogue Solutions and their synths for high end gear - please do not take offense, I did not mean to be rude). If you want, I'll take those Infinite Jets from you.
@@LiamKillen oh sure, you might like both units, the workflow, the sound - I just can’t look at 707 in the same category as Tempest, Analog Rytm or MachineDrum, Tanzbar, Pulsar 23 - these are all high end machines where MC 707 floats somewhere in the middle - and I am sorry for that, for the fact that Roland does not have a flagship, serious analogue machine packed in a modern form factor and paired with samples. Minibrute 2S can sound massive, be very practical when paired with other modules, but again, take any Fatty or Subsequent, or Mother series, it will clearly beat it in all fields. Same with Pro 3, Pro 2, even as I said, older Mopho or Evolver. There are plenty high end synths nowdays, and while we may love and like these two machines you mentioned, they are clearly budget units vs these I have mentioned.
@@LiamKillen Here is an idea - lets make one track using 707 and 2S ONLY, then the same track with Analog Rytm and Pro 3. No fancy plugins, nothing except eq and basic compression. Or you make the OG track with 707 and 2s and send me midi files, I will use AR and Pro 3 - and we can compare. Ofc I will record everything just so its 100% legit.
4:15 'It has its little problems, but so does all dawless gear.' Dawless gear is a new one! 🤣As opposed to a laptop, tablet, newer MPC's and such? I know you just meant standalone hardware in general, but I had to point it out.
Standalone hardware can be classified as dawless IMO- gear that doesn’t use a desktop DAW to function- but still a tool that you’re able to complete a full on track with. Grooveboxes / samplers nowadays can be considered DAWLESS as well.
@@LiamKillen Sure, but the gear with a DAW (or a scaled down version) of a DAW are the exceptions, right? Most hardware doesn't have a DAW. Hardware samplers and grooveboxes have always been dawless. The new boxes like MPC One that house a scaled down daw are the exceptions.
I think one of the things that you are missing with the gear you have or maybe rather emphasizing too much is how they make you money, etc. Like...obviously everyone uses gear for different reasons, but It would have been nice to preface the entire video with that because after mentioning 'it looks good on instagram' etc. or whatever a couple of times (in various forms of that sentiment) it feels less like, "My work flow doesn't need them" and more like, "My use of gear as social media cash flow AND my work flow don't fit". If that makes sense. None of this is to be taken as mean spirited, but just like...for us not making videos, that kind of stuff doesn't matter, really. If a piece of gear is rare or ugly or common and pretty, etc. Those aren't really things some of us out there consider. Photogenic gear isn't a priority for us just wanting to mash pads and twist knobs. Anyway, still interesting. I'd have kept the PO's, though. They don't take up any room. lol
Hey Jeremy, I did emphasize practicality of all the gear in this video as well. That being said, I do believe that aesthetic plays a big roll in using/playing a piece of gear whether or not you’re going to be filming said piece of gear- I think it’s more important than most synthies are willing to admit. I respect your take and also feel like you’re speaking for a lot of people watching this video who may be on a different part of the “gear and interest spectrum” than you.
@@LiamKillen Well, yeah, we want our gear to look great. I love the 90's Yamaha aesthetic of the RS7000 that I own, but ultimately, I don't think about that when I'm using it. I have an MC101 and it's aesthetic is very simple and I ended up just slathering stickers on it to give it a little life, but what I jive with most on it is it's 'focus'. That said, I still think you should keep the PO's cause they're tiny and cool and that's lame you got screwed on the SP303. Buying used gear is always a gamble, but I never thought about the possibility of being a 'personality' to be taken advantage of just because I bought a used ESX back in 2009 and I got it and it was full of sawdust(!) and none of the buttons worked! I was and am still basically unknown so we all get taken advantage of when someone is out there wanting to do it.
most gear i saw was terrible, who buys this. U want Elektron (and more the OT - Rytm -Four) - jomox - Dave Smith - Moog and established, worth their money synths. Dont ever buy toys. Save up longer and buy quality only. Sell all crap for one solid piece instead.
@@LiamKillen yes like a model D from behringer but OP-1 and those fake eurorack stuff man.. I'm so happy that from the beginning of my journey I quickly discovered the pleasure of well thought designs that are practical and deliver out of this world sounds. I had that studio filled with junk and over 30-40 synths wich have all been replaced within the year for more expensive (better designed) machines. Not all expensive is better but if you talk about groove boxes and synthesizers... It tbh mostly is. I can't describe the pleasure I get from my prophet X and moog/elektrons, everytime I try a cheaper synth like miniloge or stuff it just takes so much more energy to get a worse result. Most gear companies they try to make u believe u need magic tricks and little hacks etc... It's all very simple and straight forward its like all these mixing tutorials.. You can give an ape a golden ring but that doesn't make it better the core sound must be good, some basic EQ and compression adjusted in the right listening environment and you're done. Some stuff you just know it will get the flow going and only focus on those items. But I see u get it, was not meant offensive or anything I just see so many friends etc.. getting lost in their view and can't separate the junk from the goldies. Every beginner should learn that it has to be what it needs to be and all other stuff is disposable. If it can't do something then get rid of it all and buy that thing you know can do everything u need. sorry for the bible Maybe I need to start a channel and talk about this 🤣

Yeah, I got taken advantage of on an MPC 1000 purchase, but luckily paypal had my back.
Good!
Yeah that’s pretty much where I’m at with the model samples too
Life's about choices .. thanks for sharing your expertise and tips .. cheers !
Exactly!
thnaks..if it's not being part of the process,it should go..
Exactly
I need help on how to get in contact with these companies to make content 😭🥴
Make (lots of) content to get their attention! That’s how I did it
Great video, hit it with a like :) , Unrelated question: I got a microcosm hologram for my small setups, do you go stereo in on it? or just mono? not sure what the trend is with this device since I feel I can save a channel if I just go mono in with it (and use a summed/mono stereo signal in if I have to).
I usually do mono in stereo out but it depends
If you took to the digitakt… I can’t recommend the octatrack enough. there’s a whole world in there…
Speaking of worlds in boxes, my microcosm comes in the mail tomorrow (*heavy breathing*)
I gotta look into the FX though and whether not I’d actually like ‘em
@@LiamKillen You won't be writing home about the reverbs ha. Its the xfader scene changes that unlock the secret combos.
No. No, pocket operators will always stay with me. But I salute your choice.
Yeah the few that I kept I’ll keep forever
Love your vids. Quick question, where did you get the sp404 mk2 skin??
Style flip- thanks!
Before you shell 'em, make a jam video with a of them!
😏
Too much gear distracts you just like having too many plug-ins.
Yup
Lol
I recommend the octatrack but the learning curve is steep if you're prepared to put in the time it's worth it. But It can set there collecting dust if not.
I got one!!!
I Saw your 303 on fb, really appealing, but i don't know electrinics enough 😅
Yeah that’s a tough one
Whew. For a second there I thought you were going to get rid of your beloved Tascam 424
I might actually lol- I’m thinking of getting a porta one instead
@@LiamKillen Is that like a smaller version basically?
Well you cannot get rid id distrokit - because the moment you stop paying, Audio content disappears, unless you buy yourself free
Lifetime option! One time payment
I have been living this lately
Right!?
Could make a whole video about how you'll/I'll never sell the Microcosm lol.
I’ve already scripted a “gear I’ll never sell” video- it’s comin’ atchya soon
Yeah thing is at 32 bit 196khz there's so much headroom it's possible to do so much with au plug-ins and these new macos m2 monster machines. Then there's cool mini stuff coming out like the t8 which takes up far less space and energy than behringer analog etuff.
Absolutely! T-8 is great!
@@LiamKillen personally I like the little things, the volcas, pocket operators but also things like the t8 which play well with ios
Well you cannot get rid id distrokit - because the moment you stop paying, Audio all your disappears, unless you buy yourself free
Unless you select the one time payment lifetime option for your tunes
Thanks!

@@LiamKillen yo-ho-ho!
That beatbox by Rythmo looks cool af . I would love it
How much u selling it for and where?
It’s already gone!
@@LiamKillen not surprised. It’s a super cool piece
Curious, what are the stands you use for the digo combo?
Varidock!! The best
Hiiii
Heard u mention MooG audio and that u live nearby the store .. I live pretty close to the store too .. my question is do you live in Montreal like I do…… If not well OK then… But if you do I like having such a good creator like you in Montreal❤️🔥
Yeah I’m down the street from the Moog shop!
So Liam... did you have a fallback on the M:S?
Do you mean like did I start using it again? I sold it- it's gone! Didn't make sense to own it seeing as i've got the Digitakt.
Get the Octatrack...you know you want it. In fairness as old as it is there really isn't anything like it.
Everyone says that
@@LiamKillen Love mine and only learned 1/8 of what it can do.
how do i upload to distrokid dawless????
Unfortunately you cannot lol
Please don’t relinquish your digitone! 😭
I won’t haha
Sooo, you selling this stuff to get into modular... Great idea!
Yeah I’m not sure how deep I’m gonna get into modular for that exact reason
DO NOT get the rmx 1000. I was sooo disappointed with it. I thought it would address my live performance FXs itch but it didn't..at all.
I actually tried it out and liked it a lot. The thing is it’s very specific so like for how long?
@@LiamKillen I've had it for over a year. The problem is that the effects are too digital. Also the filters are not that great and tempo syncing isn't that accurate IMO. Anyways to each their own i guess
a few of my friends love pocket ops, i.... dont like them at all hahahaha, but i dont hate them, if someone likes them cool... not for me
cool red look with the digitak (ive been considering one of those, but to be honest i dont need it, so haha if you have it in like 5 months hit me up, id probably buy it from ya)
Hey reallllly cool that you are going to be open with communication about the sp303.... sucks when gear is broken, but awesome of you for response, big respect
yeah fuck that stylophone, its mostly an instagram thing i think
annnnyways, where is your strega, get one of those beasts, they are so sick
ive got your next whiskey in kansas
I think POs are underrated! I just don’t need all 12 of them 😂
@@LiamKillen totally valid, I generally agree with you
i dont need any pos tho hahah
but i tell you what.... that sp404mk2 is sooooo sick, and ive been using it like crazy lately, and your channel helped me learn it
You know you can just plug a class-compliant usb audio interface into Your iPhone and use that to record, yeah?
I do know that
So how much for the Sp 303 and the infinite jets

RMX-1000 is cool but i want a RC-505 1st ... for sure
Lemme check that out…
Oh yeah it’s sick
Thing about the RC-505 is that the MK2, so much better on paper, is riddled with problems such that dedicated users are emphatically stating to not get one. So, do we go with the old model? This dilemma has me not getting one (if and until they fix the Mk2).
Ill take a sampler :)
I got a few peeps interested lol
It's the Puuurgge!
😏
Moog Audio in Montreal? Ha, we are neighbors.
Yeah! I do content for them :-)
I f feel the early pocket operators kind of suck
Po-12 is one of my favs
Love this video. Tysm

Can I buy a PO cover?
I’m gonna be putting everything up on Reverb today
I like your videos! I'm just wondering: why call it 'dawless gear'. Like, isn't it just gear? Of course a synthesizer or groovebox is dawless. Why say it? My shoes are dawless, but I just call them shoes. My synth doesn't have a bathroom, but I don't call it bathroomless. Know what I mean? Okay that's all byeee 💘
I’m coming out with a video on like the definition of dawless to refer questions like this to lol
@@LiamKillen Nice! I hope the video features a dawless guitar 🎸
I dunno man…the 2s is pretty dope- same with the Mc 797
707**
How about them pocket operators
They’re dope I just need all 12 lol
If you’re going to pair with Moog, you might want to learn how to pronounce their name correctly.
No one really cares tbh- Moog - “mogue” . Potayto Potauto
It’s like Digitakt vs Dijitakt- nobody cares
@@LiamKillen it sounded like Moog provided you with gear so if that’s the case I’m sure they would care. Just a thought.
They don't take up any room. lol
Hey Jeremy,
I did emphasize practicality of all the gear in this video as well.
Dawless gear? What does that even mean? Clickbait is getting more weird by the year. pfffff
Gear that gives you the tools to create but doesn’t require you to sit at the modern version of a DAW- at a desktop on your lap top. 🍻
@@LiamKillen So...just gear you mean?
Because, if it links with a DAW, it not 'DAWless' right?
@@LiamKillen So, all instruments/gear?
most gear i saw was terrible, who buys this. U want Elektron (and more the OT - Rytm -Four) - jomox - Dave Smith - Moog and established, worth their money synths. Dont ever buy toys. Save up longer and buy quality only. Sell all crap for one solid piece instead.
Weellllllll sort of. Cheaper items can be useful too I’m the right context
If it can't do something then get rid of it all and buy that thing you know can do everything u need.
sorry for the bible
Maybe I need to start a channel and talk about this 🤣
